Chapter 102: It Must Be Sean!

Melissa’s POV

I had been restless for days, and no matter how hard I tried, nothing seemed to work.

I’d stopped eating properly in their eyes, locked myself in my room, hoping they’d notice me, and would knock on my door, asking if I was okay. But no one came.

Other than my mother, no one bothered to look for me.

The more I tried to draw their eyes back to me, the more they acted like I didn’t exist.

I was supposed to be the daughter of this house... the one they all should love and the one everyone praised. I did everything right and was always flawless in front of people. I even took care of the family’s image while my brothers... One left home, one left his job, and the other was not coming back home!

And yet, all it took was Seraphina’s return to erase me completely.

But I still hadn’t given up. I watched them closely and waited for my chance.

I kept telling myself this wasn’t over and I could still fix it.

If I could just get a minute alone with either of them, I’d explain that I’d done nothing wrong. Sera was being manipulated by someone who didn’t want her to feel safe with her family.

Because I was her family, and I always had been.

But Alistair only showed up when she was home, and he was gone before I even got a chance to speak.

And Asher? He didn’t even bother anymore. He spent more time outside than inside this house now. I couldn’t tell if he was ashamed... or just avoiding me because he felt guilty.

They left me no choice but to try a different route.

And that route was my mother.

Even though I didn’t want to seem like a child running to her mother to complain, I couldn’t ignore the fact that she was still my strongest ally. But I had to be careful. If I pushed too hard, I’d look desperate.

I didn’t want to ruin things for myself and tell her anything outright.

I was here to hear everything accidentally.

I was still pacing in my room, debating my next move, when I caught sight of Alistair and Seraphina heading toward the rooftop from the hallway window.

"Seriously?" I muttered, my jaw tightening. "They’re not even trying to hide it anymore..."

Just days ago, they’d been quiet around the house, scared of disturbing Mother. But now? They were walking side by side, smiling, as if they owned the place.

They were getting too bold.

A bitter taste filled my mouth as I watched them climb the stairs. My hands clenched into fists before I even realized it.

I needed to know what they were talking about, and whatever Seraphina was feeding him, it had to stop.

But before I followed them, I made a quick stop at Mother’s room, gently cracking the door open just enough to peek inside. To my relief, she was sprawled comfortably on her bed, scrolling through reels on her phone.

Perfect.

I crept up the stairs, my footsteps careful. I followed just far enough behind to avoid being seen, hiding near the rooftop entrance.

I could hear them talking, but didn’t know what they were saying. However, what I understood by now was that...

Seraphina... liked someone.

The moment I heard it, everything inside me froze.

She had feelings for someone?

For a second, I stood completely still, stunned.

She had someone she liked. But why didn’t I know?

No! I knew who that person was!

It must be... Sean.

It had to be him. The man who was supposed to be mine. The one Grandma Lancaster had handpicked as my future husband, who fit perfectly into the role carved out for me.

That title had been mine from the start.

I was raised to be the perfect bride for someone like him, who was poised, accomplished, and worthy. Not Seraphina, who came back with dirt under her nails.

I pressed a hand against the cold metal railing to steady myself as fury burned through me.

She had already taken enough.

She had taken my place, stolen the affection of my brothers.

And now?

Now she wanted to take him too?

My lips parted in disbelief, but no sound came out.

I wasn’t saying these things out of some baseless paranoia. I knew what I had seen.

I remembered Seraphina chasing after Sean like a possessed girl. She called him her light, confessing her feelings in front of everyone like a lovesick fool.

Please.

She’d always been desperate. The kind of girl who clung to anyone who showed her the slightest ounce of affection. She’d just gotten better at hiding it.

But I hadn’t forgotten.

This was the time for me to take her down.

Without thinking twice, I pulled out my phone and typed a message to Mother, keeping it vague but urgent.

"Come to the rooftop. Brother Alistair wants to talk to you. It’s important."

I hit send, my lips curling into a cold smile.

If Seraphina wanted to play innocent in front of my brothers, let’s see how she handled herself when Mother arrived and got to know everything that she had done to me.

Because I knew one thing for sure... Mother didn’t take kindly to girls who acted out of place.

Especially the girls who were trying to steal what wasn’t theirs.

"Brother," I arrived right in front of them without hesitation. "I have something to talk to you," I stated firmly, gesturing at Sera to leave silently.

"I don’t..." Alistair opened his mouth, and it was evident that he wanted to reject me, but I cut him off.

"It’s important," I stated. "Please give me some time."

"Brother," Sera gazed at Alistair. "Why not talk to her?" she said, to which Alistair agreed without hesitation.

’How could she control him like this!’

"Sure," Alistair nodded, and Seraphina left the scene.

This was what I needed. All just left was for mother to appear.
