Chapter 91: "Why are you being so kind to me?"

Author’s POV

Seraphina was exhausted both in body and mind. All she wanted in that moment was to close her eyes and rest for a little while.

But Lucien, instead of letting her breathe, had decided to lecture her like she had done something wrong. It irritated her a lot.

But still, she kept her voice calm as she answered all the questions he threw at her. However, Lucien’s next word made her furious.

"Aren’t I a stranger too?" Lucien asked suddenly in a sharp voice. "Someone you barely know?"

His words made her feel so wronged which infuriated her and with whatever strength she had been holding onto she rose to her feet.

She stared at him in disbelief and fury flashing in her tired eyes.

After everything she had done... After showing up drenched, sick, and vulnerable, this was what he had to say?

That was enough.

Her body was shaking as she stood up from the couch. Her legs felt weak, but she didn’t stop.

"I must’ve been a fool to come here," she said in a shaking but firm voice. "Please... just forget I ever showed up."

She turned to leave, dragging the towel off her shoulders and tossing it aside.

"What!?" Lucien stood frozen for a second. He was stunned by her sudden actions.

But as she took another weak step toward the door, he quickly reached out and grabbed her hand, holding it gently but firmly.

"Wait," he said softly as his voice sounded a little desperate.

He felt how cold her fingers were and how shaky she was.

"I didn’t mean to tease you," Lucien said quietly, his tone softer now. "I just wanted to know what made you come here but..."

He paused for a moment, then added, "Before anything else... why don’t you go to your room and get changed?"

Seraphina was still mad; she was about to yank her hand away and walk out, but his last words stopped her in her tracks.

Your room?

She blinked at him in confusion. There was a room for her?

Even in the Lancaster mansion, she hadn’t had one until she rebelled and earned it.

"My room?" she asked in a whispered tone.

"Sure," Lucien nodded, stepping in front of her. His voice was low and calm but careful.

He reached out and gently placed the back of his hand on her forehead. It was too warm.

But her fingers were still ice cold.

She had a high fever and cold at the same time.

Seraphina instinctively stepped back the moment his hand touched her forehead. She still wasn’t used to being touched even if gently.

"I can walk on my own," she mumbled, pulling her hand away and taking a step back, though her legs were still trembling.

Lucien didn’t argue.

He simply looked at her with calm but steady eyes. "I know you can," he said softly. "I’m not forcing you... but you’re not well, Sera. Just let me help you."

Her heartbeat shot up again. The moment his voice softened and his eyes turned gentle.

She hated how her heart betrayed her at every moment and even her body.

She looked away, trying to hide her beating heart. "I didn’t come here to be pitied." She stated.

"Why would you be," Lucien said firmly. "I don’t pity you. But you’re shivering, you’ve been in the rain, and you’re burning up. Just let me get you to your room, and after that, you can do whatever you want. I won’t stop you."

Seraphina didn’t say anything and just walked to the guest room, where she had always lived. However, Lucien stopped her and guided her toward the room next to him. She had no strength left as always and just wanted to get out of her damn clothes.

But just as she walked toward the guest room, Lucien’s voice stopped her.

"Why would you live in a guest room?" he said with a soft chuckle, awkwardly. "Anyone can be a guest... but not you."

His words made her freeze.

I’m not a guest?

She wanted to turn around and ask him what that meant. If she wasn’t a guest here, then what exactly was she to him? But she kept her mouth shut and kept walking.

Lucien gently guided her to the first floor, toward the room beside his own. He didn’t say anything else or explain himself.

While Seraphina just walked beside him, however, when she stepped inside, she came to a sudden halt.

The room was totally different from the cold and somber mansion’s theme.

It felt warm and full of color.

The walls were painted in soft, soothing tones that calmed the eyes. The bed was neatly made with a light pink sheet, and at her feet, a sea-themed carpet stretched across the floor, giving the room a dreamy look.

The lights weren’t too bright, glowing with a soft warmth that somehow felt both calming and cool. And the scent of fresh lavender flowers filled the air, which made it impossible to ignore.

The room wasn’t anything overly fancy. It wasn’t even full of wealth or luxury.

But it made Sera feel like a princess.

Even though the room was nowhere near the grand and over-the-top room that Asher had prepared for her but this one felt different.

It wasn’t luxurious or expensive... but it felt personal.

"Well... that day you said the house felt too gloomy for you, and that you loved colors, so..." Lucien trailed off, then continued a little awkwardly, "So I tried making it better. I mean, I personally chose everything myself, but if there’s anything you don’t like, you can change it, and—"

He didn’t get to finish.

Before he could say another word, Seraphina had already thrown herself into his arms... forgetting the fever, the rain, and even the anger.

At that moment, all she felt was the warmth that Lucien was throwing toward her.

"Why... Why are you being so kind to me, stirring such weird feelings in my heart?"
