Chapter 28: Chapter 28: The Gossiping Woman

"You’re back..." Jiayi shrank back into the corner of the sofa.

As soon as she woke, she dodged herself like dodging a ghost. Who was clinging to her like a clod of mud just now?

Huo Zhenyang frowned unhappily, "You had a nightmare."

It was then that Jiayi snapped back to reality. Yes, she had just had a terrifying nightmare. She couldn’t remember the specifics, but she recalled feeling extremely panicked, surrounded by cliffs. One wrong step would lead to her shattering to pieces. At that moment, a pair of warm and strong hands reached out to her, embracing her in time and protecting her securely.

"Is... that so?" she murmured.

"You were begging someone not to push you, screaming for help." The man’s pupils, in the dim light, seemed bright one moment and dark the next, thoughtful.

Push? Screaming for help?

Could it be... did this dream have something to do with her falling down the hunting grounds of Huanglong Mountain? Could it be the truth behind her amnesia?

Jiayi clutched her head, biting down on her lower lip. She tried to remember, but she just couldn’t recall the details of the dream!

For someone with amnesia, knowing that they have a past, a family, yet not being able to remember, is the greatest pain.

The more she thought, the more her head hurt, like being sawed at...

Large sweat droplets that had just dried on Jiayi began to bead again, her complexion growing paler as if she was struggling in the whirlpool of memories.

Huo Zhenyang knew what she was doing, hurting herself. His gaze deepened abruptly as he pulled her arm, his voice stern, "Enough!"

His reprimand broke her from her recollections, leaving her wilted on the sofa, gradually regaining her composure, yet becoming lost in thought.

She looked like a helpless little rabbit.

Huo Zhenyang bent down and wrapped his suit jacket around the shivering girl. Before Jiayi could react, he scooped her up in a princess hold and headed to the second floor.

Halfway up, Jiayi came to her senses and tried to break free. She was about to pound on his chest with her clenched fists but was quieted by his intimidating gaze and didn’t move anymore.

Huo Zhenyang carried her into her bedroom, placed her on the bed, and looked at her deeply. His tone was calm, but it carried an imperial command that brooked no opposition,

"Be good, sleep. Don’t think wildly anymore."

Jiayi also realized that forcibly breaking through memory barriers, ignoring the body’s reactions and the brain’s feelings, was something the body couldn’t withstand and would lead to injury, but she couldn’t help it.

"As long as you behave, I will keep the promises I made. I will never break my word," Huo Zhenyang knew exactly how to make the girl feel at ease, which was nothing other than promising to help her find her family and uncover her identity.

The man’s words were like the last dose of a calming elixir, settling Jiayi down. She looked at the man with an emotionless face in front of her, biting her lip, "You said that."

"Mhm." A single, simple word.

Jiayi’s complexion slowly became more rosy, like a child who had received candy, obediently climbing into bed. As she watched the man’s retreating back about to leave the bedroom, something suddenly occurred to her. She propped herself up and called out weakly, "Wait a minute."

The man paused and slightly turned his handsome face, which didn’t seem earthly.

"Did you transfer Manager Cui to the warehouse?"

A slight smile tugged at one corner of Huo Zhenyang’s mouth, "If you’re willing, I’ll spread the word tomorrow. Everyone in J&J will know that you are the woman of the CEO of Huo Group. No one will dare look down on you or bully you again."

It was indeed him.

This man, he certainly wasn’t worried about people bullying her; it was still about his own face, right?

After all, given his domineering and egocentric nature, if he knew someone had humiliated his girlfriend, he would certainly be upset.

Jiayi clutched the corner of her nightgown, her bright red lips wiggling, "No need... my colleagues at the company haven’t bullied me."

She had insisted on not revealing her identity to the outside world and now had to grit her teeth and endure the situation, otherwise, it would be so embarrassing!

A hint of a cold sneer flashed in Huo Zhenyang’s eyes; he liked seeing her stubbornness. Good, let’s see how long this little wildcat can hold out. He turned and strode out of the bedroom.

The next day, Jiayi realized on her way to work that the news of her not being able to afford a car ride home and walking instead to save money had already spread throughout the entire marketing department of J&J.

As soon as she entered the company, she noticed that her colleagues were pointing at her and whispering, with an indescribable flavor in their smiles.

At first, she didn’t think much of it, but slowly, she began to sense that something was off.

When she got to her office seat, an earlier-arrived Tang En’en hurried over to talk to her, and that’s when she understood.

"No need to say it’s definitely the wind put out deliberately by Qiao Mina and her bunch. What a group of gossipy women, having nothing better to do!" Tang En’en glared at Qiao Mina’s side with a knife-like sharpness.

Always held high, Qiao Mina’s pale, sharp face flushed red when she heard herself being called a gossipy woman: "Tang En’en, who are you talking about?" 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Whoever does such boring things, that’s who I’m talking about." Tang En’en wasn’t afraid of Qiao Mina and never flattered her.

Qiao Mina couldn’t show weakness in front of her. Grinding her teeth, she retorted, "What does it have to do with you? Who are you? The person concerned hasn’t even spoken, and here you are, playing Pacific Ocean police—so meddlesome!"

Having just started working two days ago, Jiayi hadn’t wanted to sour relationships with her colleagues, yet seeing Tang En’en sticking up for her, she couldn’t just play mute. She glanced over at Qiao Mina and pulled Tang En’en down, "Some people have nothing better to do than to watch whether others leave work by car or on foot. I can’t help it, let her keep watching, I’ll just pretend I’m a celebrity being stalked by the paparazzi."

At these words, the office burst into muffled laughter.

Qiao Mina, ridiculed as a paparazzo by Jiayi, turned even redder with anger, clenching her fists. She hadn’t expected this damn girl to be so defiant. Unable to swallow this humiliation and about to counterattack, she saw Gao Ziming, the company’s vice-president, arriving. Qiao Mina temporarily swallowed her fury, plastering on a smile, respectfully greeting, "Vice-President Gao."

Jiayi and Tang En’en hurriedly stood up along with the other employees.

Gao Ziming, middle-aged and clad in a designer suit, belly protruding, squinted his small, somewhat lecherous eyes and cleared his throat, "You all are aware of Manager Cui from market department being transferred to the warehouse, right?"

"We know," the employees chorused.

"With the market department temporarily lacking management, Vice-President Gu and I discussed and decided to temporarily appoint one of the colleagues from the department to take over and handle Manager Cui’s previous affairs."

Wow... who would stumble into this good fortune? The employees started whispering excitedly among themselves.

Qiao Mina’s red lips curled into a confident smile, puffing up her already several layers of padded chest.

Sure enough, Gao Ziming’s gaze settled on Qiao Mina, "Mina, for these few months, you will take over Manager Cui’s work starting today."

An uproar of congratulations and well-wishes for Qiao Mina ensued nonstop.

When Gao Ziming left, Qiao Mina’s spot boiled like hot water, everyone crowding around her, practically lifting her to the skies.

"Who knows what tricks Qiao Mina used to get to act as Manager Cui," Tang En’en remarked snidely.

Jiayi said nothing, bending her head to continue familiarizing herself with the business knowledge she hadn’t finished learning the day before.

Amidst the crowd’s praise and flattery, Qiao Mina fixed her gaze on the girl reviewing documents, stood up, and with a smile said:

"Jiayi, you’re not busy now, right? I have a few samples of new makeup products on the market; a client just called wanting to take a look. Could you deliver them for me? Oh, and you must get them there within half an hour!"
