Chapter 47: Chapter 47 Go Out and Have Fun

Jiayi answered the phone, and a familiar female voice came through, lively and clear:

"Jiayi, are you up yet?"

Tang En’en? Shouldn’t she be at work at this time? What’s she calling for? Jiayi hurriedly said, "Yes, I’m up. How about you? Are you at the office?"

"No, I’m at home," Tang En’en sounded somewhat surprised, "Bright and early, I actually got a call from Deputy Director Gao saying that you had too much to drink at a business dinner last night. Knowing that you and I are close at the company, he gave me a paid leave to spend the day with you. By the way, are you at home now? If so, give me your address, and I’ll come see you, okay?"

Jiayi, caught between laughter and tears, thought that this Gao Ziming must have been truly frightened. He was considering everything too thoroughly, even giving Tang En’en a day off, for fear that she would be lonely. She quickly said, "No need, I didn’t drink much and the alcohol has long worn off."

"Oh," Tang En’en, hearing she couldn’t visit her home, sounded a tad disappointed, maybe she could have seen that mysterious cousin of Jiayi’s whose voice was known but not his face, "Then are you at home alone? I don’t have anything to do either. How about you come out?"

"Where to?"

"I was planning to invite you out to KTV to sing and meet some new friends last night. You didn’t show up, making a few of my friends somewhat disappointed. Today, it happens to be one of those friend’s birthdays. They’re having a small birthday party at Qiangui KTV in Century Garden this afternoon; the same group from yesterday will be there. Why don’t we join them and liven things up? They’re all my college classmates, about our age."

Jiayi hesitated for a moment, but Tang En’en couldn’t wait any longer, "You don’t have many friends in G City; it’s time you met some new people!"

Yes, indeed, meeting new people was something she should do.

Now, her world was almost a blank slate. She couldn’t remember anything from her past. Expanding her circle of friends and acquaintances could only be beneficial.

Why should her world be completely occupied by that one man alone?

Jiayi thought of what Auntie Li had said last night about getting married and felt an inexplicable discomfort in her heart. Without hesitating further, she said, "Okay, I’ll change my clothes and head out. Let’s meet at the subway station exit near Qiangui in Century Garden."

After setting the time to meet, Jiayi hung up the phone, had breakfast, picked out a dress from the wardrobe, told Auntie Li she was leaving, and stepped out.

George, as usual, was waiting at the entrance to the apartment early.

Jiayi would normally get into the car without a second thought, but today was different.

Seeing Jiayi descending the stairs, George came from the driver’s seat, opened the back door, yet found Jiayi standing still with no intention of getting in, and with her face lifted to his, she said, "George, I’m not going to work today, so no need for you to drive me. I’m going to take the subway."

"Miss Jiayi, I’m not just responsible for driving you to and from work," George replied, "The president has said that no matter where you go, I must be by your side."

Jiayi took a deep breath, "I’m just going out with En’en for a bit. I won’t go far. Do you think taking me there with all the pomp because you’re worried En’en wouldn’t know? Don’t worry, nothing will happen to me, and I definitely won’t run away. With your boss’s power in G City, even if I did run, where could I possibly go?"

The last sentence carried a hint of defiance.

Had she argued with the boss? George paused for a moment, then still tried to persuade her, "Miss Jiayi, I think it’s better if I take you. Like when you go to work, I can park the car far away, so your friends won’t see..."

He didn’t finish his sentence before Jiayi’s voice turned noticeably cooler, "Enough, Huo Zhenyang may be your boss, but right now you are serving me, and I’m your superior too. Can’t you listen to a single word I say?"

George could tell that Miss Jiayi’s mood was off today; she didn’t seem to be in the best spirits.

"Miss Jiayi, how about I make a call to the president first, to see what he says..."

"Sure, tell him I’m not a pet he keeps; it’s not like I have to report to him just to go out and shop with a friend!" Jiayi’s fair face suddenly flushed with anger, and for some reason today, just hearing that man’s name made her uncomfortable.

George, squinting his eyes slightly, finally nodded, "Then, Miss Jiayi, go and come back quickly. If anything happens, call my phone."

Jiayi left George behind and boarded the subway.

This was her first time taking the subway in G City. Ever since Huo Zhenyang had brought her from the hunting ground to the urban area, she had been cloistered in a protected bubble, with no exposure to the outside world.

Even after she joined the company, she always had his invisible protection, shielding her from all external adversities.

The subway was crowded and noisy, extremely packed. The smell of sweat, the cries of children, kept pouring in like waves into her ears, incessantly.

When she finally reached her destination and stepped out of the subway station, Jiayi felt somewhat dizzy. Only then did she realize how comfortable it was to be picked up and dropped off by George’s car. Right at that moment, an excited voice came rushing over, someone patted her on the shoulder, "You’re here!"

Dressed in a striped T-shirt paired with denim shorts, Tang En’en exuded youthful energy and had already arrived.

They chatted and laughed, heading toward Qiangui KTV at Century Garden.

Inside the Qiangui KTV private room, as Jiayi followed Tang En’en through the door, she heard a loud "pop" above her head, followed by something soft and fluffy cascading down.

Jiayi touched her head, finding it covered with the streamers used for celebrations, tangled all over her head and arms, while Tang En’en laughed, waving the streamers off her body and pretending to be angry, "Okay, just wait and see how I’m going to deal with you later!"

Laughter and cheerful voices filled the private room.

"You’re so late, of course, we have to prank you!"

"Jiayi, is this the new colleague who didn’t show up yesterday? She’s so beautiful!"

Some people weren’t ready to let the two beauties off the hook just yet, grabbing spray bottles and streamers and crowding at the door to continue dousing the pair.

Used to roughhousing with a group of friends, Tang En’en wasn’t bothered, but she was worried it might scare Jiayi and she laughed while blocking, "Enough, do you want to scare her away?"

The crowd, however, were wild with fun, and someone even grabbed two beer bottles, shook them vigorously, and then pulled off the caps directed at the two women.

The beer exploded like splendid fireworks, bursting forth towards the two girls.

With a "pfft" sound of the jetting liquid, Jiayi’s dress got soaked as she happened to be in the line of spray, and the room immediately filled with good-natured laughter.

Jiayi forced a smile and just as she bent down to wring her damp dress, a tall figure emerged from the crowd.

A young man with handsome and white features, refined and scholarly, stopped the group from continuing the fun, "Alright, stop scaring En’en’s friend."

His intervention finally made everyone stop, and they each returned to their sofas.

The man approached Jiayi, handing her a box of tissues, and said gently, "Wipe it off, and if that doesn’t work, go to the restroom—there’s an automatic dryer inside."

Jiayi looked up, the man in his twenties, handsome and amiable, which immediately made a good impression. She accepted the box of tissues, "Thank you."

"It’s nothing, they’re just playing around, we’re all like this in private, don’t take it to heart," said the young man, his voice pleasant to the ear, making one feel the warmth of spring.

"I know, it’s okay," Jiayi said with a slight curl of her lips, completely understanding. Actually, a bit of craziness like this made her feel much better.

"I’m Jiang Pinhao, En’en’s university friend. And you are?" The man introduced himself with a light laugh, extending a hand.

Jiayi hurriedly extended her wet hand, but then worrying about dirtying his, she withdrew it, "Luo Jiayi."

The girl’s hesitancy was quite adorable, and Jiang Pinhao chuckled.

Without dwelling on it further, Jiayi nodded and hurried off to the restroom.

Watching Jiang Pinhao’s gaze following Jiayi’s departing figure, Tang En’en joked while playfully hitting him, "Mr. Class President, my clothes are wet too—how come you didn’t offer me tissues?"
