SSS Awakening: I Can Create Skills By Will-Chapter 9: Intent, Sharpened
The skeleton did not rush him this time.
Arthur noticed it immediately.
It stood several steps away, rusted blade angled low, its hollow eye sockets locked onto him. It wasn’t charging. It wasn’t flailing. It was watching, as if measuring distance, timing, intent.
Arthur rolled his shoulders once and exhaled.
"Good," he muttered. "Take your time."
He stepped forward.
Not fast. Not slow.
Measured.
This fight wasn’t about survival anymore. That part had already been settled. He knew he could live through it. Now it was about something else.
Control.
The skeleton moved first.
It lunged without warning, blade snapping forward in a straight, ugly thrust. Steel scraped against stone as Arthur twisted his torso aside by the narrowest margin. The dagger passed through the space where his ribs had been a heartbeat earlier.
He didn’t panic.
He didn’t flinch.
His feet adjusted without conscious thought, weight shifting smoothly. There was no scramble, no wasted step. Just motion correcting itself.
Sovereign’s Bearing was active.
He could feel it now more clearly than before. Not like strength filling his muscles. Not like speed flooding his limbs. It was quieter than that.
The absence of noise.
Fear still existed somewhere in the back of his mind. Pain was still waiting, patient and sharp. But neither of them had a voice anymore.
Arthur stepped forward instead of retreating.
His dagger flicked out. Not wide. Not dramatic. Short and tight. The tip struck the skeleton’s wrist joint.
Crack.
Bone didn’t explode, but the blade slid cleanly between the joints and twisted. The skeleton’s grip failed. Its sword fell and hit the ground with a dry, hollow clang.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
"So that works too," he murmured.
The skeleton reacted instantly. It lunged again, this time with its free hand, fingers clawing straight for his throat.
Arthur leaned into the attack instead of pulling away. His shoulder brushed brittle ribs as he passed inside its reach, and he drove the pommel of his dagger into the side of its skull.
Thunk.
The impact rattled up his arm. The skeleton staggered, balance gone.
Arthur didn’t chase wildly like before.
He stepped once. Adjusted his footing. Then struck again.
The blade slid beneath the rib cage, angled upward.
Crk!
The skeleton collapsed into a heap, bones scattering across the dungeon floor.
Arthur stood over it, chest rising and falling, sweat running down his forehead. He didn’t smile. Not yet.
"That’s one," he said quietly. "Let’s go again."
Bones rattled to his left.
Another skeleton pulled itself free from a pile of loose rubble. This one carried a shield. Cracked, worn, but still usable.
Arthur took a slow breath.
Same intent.
The skeleton charged, shield raised. Its sword stabbed forward in short, clumsy thrusts. Arthur gave ground half a step, then planted his foot and knocked the blade aside with the flat of his dagger.
Clang!
The sound rang sharp and loud in the chamber.
The shield slammed into him.
Arthur let it hit.
Pain shot through his forearm as he absorbed the impact. His boots skidded back across the stone floor. His teeth clenched hard enough to ache, but his thoughts stayed clear.
Good.
The skeleton pressed its advantage, swinging again, faster this time. Arthur ducked under the arc, rolled past the creature’s side, and came up behind it.
He didn’t aim for the spine.
Instead, he stabbed low.
Crack.
The dagger pierced the back of the knee joint. The skeleton’s leg buckled instantly. It collapsed sideways, shield smashing against the floor.
Arthur stepped in close. Almost chest to chest.
He drove his blade up through the base of the skull.
The skeleton went still.
Arthur pulled his dagger free and stepped back, breathing hard.
His arms trembled now. His legs burned. The fight was draining more stamina than he expected.
But it worked.
He could feel the difference clearly. This wasn’t imagination. Every movement had purpose. Every strike ended something.
Another skeleton rose.
Then another.
Arthur swallowed and raised his dagger.
"Alright," he said. "One more test."
This time, he advanced first.
The skeletons moved together, one attacking high, the other low. Arthur slipped between them, dagger flashing in tight, in controlled motions.
Wrist.
Elbow.
Ankle.
Bone cracked again and again.
Crk. Snap. Crack.
A blade caught his side.
Pain flared, hot and sharp.
Arthur hissed through his teeth but didn’t retreat.
Not yet.
He pivoted with the pain, using it to anchor his focus instead of breaking it. He slammed his shoulder into the first skeleton.
It shattered on impact. Bones burst outward in every direction.
The second skeleton lunged for his exposed back.
Arthur spun, dagger already moving.
Shnk.
The blade punched through its sternum.
The skeleton froze. Then collapsed.
Arthur dropped to one knee, gasping. Sweat soaked through his shirt. His grip loosened on his dagger before he forced his fingers tight again.
"That’s... enough," he said, voice rough.
The dungeon grew quiet.
Only distant clashes echoed deeper within, mixed with dying screams that faded quickly.
Then the system chimed.

More notifications followed. Each one steady. Neutral. Almost indifferent.
Arthur leaned back against the dungeon wall and rested his head against the cold stone.
"That’s it?" he asked softly.
No answer came.
He opened the interface anyway.

Arthur stared at the number for a long moment.
Then he laughed. Short. Breathless.
"Barely two hours," he said. "And I already feel wrecked."
Still, he pushed himself to his feet.
It wasn’t disappointing. Not really.
He had felt the difference firsthand. The system wasn’t rewarding brute force or desperation. It wasn’t impressed by wild swings or reckless courage.
It was watching how he fought.
Why he fought.
Intent.
Arthur wiped blood from his side and took a slow breath. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
"Alright," he murmured. "I get it. Or at least... I’m starting to."
He moved deeper into the dungeon.
The change came gradually. The air thickened. Sounds echoed sharper and clearer. The screams changed too. Shorter. More controlled. Each followed by bursts of sound that felt deliberate.
Shwoom. Crack. Boom.
Awakened.
Others like him. Or stronger. Pushing deeper for the same reasons. Survival. Growth. Proof.
Arthur felt no urge to turn back.
If anything, the presence of stronger fighters steadied him.
He tightened his grip on his weapon and kept moving forward.
Intent sharpened.
And waiting.
