Chapter 30: Mayfair [1]

The carriage rolled into Mayfair Town thirty minutes later. Xavier, wrapped in worn-out robes that Ostig had in his carriage, stared at the wooden signboard on which the town’s name was written.

Evening had disappeared and the night had appeared. Xavier was now thinking about how lucky he was that he had found Ostig, or else he and Aria would have been stuck in a forest for the entire night.

Ostig stopped the carriage at an inn a few minutes later and climbed out. Xavier and Aria followed suit, as he led them into the inn. The inn wasn’t big, but it seemed large enough to host at least five guests, and Xavier knew that there must be a diner on the main floor. Xavier sighed in satisfaction at how warm the inn was, compared to outside which was extremely cold.

A young woman was wiping the tables and chairs as they walked in. She had blonde hair tied into a messy bun, freckles on both her cheekbones, lovely green eyes, and she was beautiful. She straightened up as she heard the bell ring off the door, signaling someone had come inside.

Her straight face transformed into a bright smile as soon as she saw Ostig.

"Mr. Ostig." She announced. "Glad to see you’re back. "

Ostig returned the smile as he said. "Can’t live without visiting this town now and then, Bella. Of course, also seeing your face."

The young woman laughed at his comment when an old woman appeared behind the reception table, a mock glare on her face as she stared at Ostig.

"Mr. Ostig." She spoke. "Are you flirting with my daughter again?"

Ostig chuckled. "No worries, ma’am. Have a daughter just her age. Can’t even think about it."

The old woman nodded, then her direction extended to the two behind him. "Friends of yours?"

Xavier and Aria stepped forward, removing their hoods that covered their face. Immediately, Bella gasped, stumbling back as she saw his face. Her mother’s eyes widened but she had more control over her expressions.

Xavier stared at Bella coldly. "Something wrong with my face?"

Bella shook her head, stammering. "I’m sorry, sir. I..I just got shocked, that’s all."

"Oh, really," Xavier replied, clearly pissed off. "Thought it was more than that." He couldn’t understand why they were shocked like that. The same thing had happened when he was being marched down the hall in Neoterra. The nobles there gazed at him the same way. Hadn’t they seen a black guy before?

Bella’s mother came to her rescue. "Forgive her, she has not seen a black man such as yourself before."

"And why is that?" Xavier asked.

The woman smiled. "It has been a long time since we heard of the Black race. They disappeared from the map. For me, it has been thirty years since I’ve seen one in my inn." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Xavier stared at her, confused. "What do you mean? Don’t blacks and whites live together?"

The woman shook her head. "They used to. But they decided to leave and form their own nation. We haven’t seen one since. And Bella was not born when they left."

The other diners were also looking at him strangely and Xavier finally knew why. Guess black people were not common here. Not like he cares or not.

Ostig directed the duo to a table and ordered food for them. "Have a nice meal." He said. "I’ve already paid roos for the night. "

Xavier smiled at him. "Thank you very much."

Ostig chuckled, shrugging. "It’s the least I can do. I rarely help people."

Bella slowly brought the tray of food to them. She looked at Xavier, hoping he wasn’t still mad at the way she reacted. She placed his tray and immediately apologised.

"I’m truly sorry for the way I reacted." She said. "It was not my intention to mock you or anything."

Xavier nodded at her. "It’s all right. I was never offended in any way."

Bella, relieved that he had accepted, immediately went back to serving the other guests. Xavier had grabbed his food and began gobbling it all down.

’This is actually good.’He thought. ’I can’t believe the last time I ate was the morning before the excursion in my old world. I’m still not sure how I survived.’

He turned to Aria who was actually eating with him. It looked like the Demaranian digestive system was the same as humans, too.

Suddenly, the door burst open with force and the lively chatter in the inn immediately dissipated. Out of the corner of his eye, Xavier watched as four men came into the place. They werecwearing armor with a badge ge couldn’t recognise but could tell was important.

Xavier looked around, noticing how the colour had drained from most of the guests inside, including both the mother and daughter.

’Looks like these guys are bad news.’ Xavier realized, still, eating. His expression had changed one bit.

"Bella!" One of them shouted, clearly the leader of the group. "I must say you look lovely tonight."

Bella, disgusted at his leering look but not showing it, smiled. "Thank you. I’ll bring the usual."

She vanished inside, the leader following her backside shamelessly before he and his men then turned to the guests, the latter avoiding their gaze.

"Hey, Chris." One of them jostled him, pointing in the direction where Ostig was sitting. "Fresh meat."

Chris turned his eyes in that direction and was shocked to his core. ’A black man.’ He thought. "It’s been a long time since I’ve seen one.’

His gaze turned to the woman beside him, and a leering smile erupted. He had his next target.

He sauntered over there like he had the world in his pocket. "Good evening, my lady." He announced, his tone soothing. "I must say you look extremely beautiful tonight. I was wondering if you would like to have dinner with me."

Xavier watched as Aria looked at him then to the man standing before her.

"Get lost, you wretched animal."

Xavier nearly choked on his water as he heard the icy tone and he couldn’t believe his ears. He watched as Chris’ face turned different shades of colour as He processed the insult.

"How dare you, you rotten bitch!" He snapped. "Do you know how I am? I’m an esteemed Knight under the command of Baron Dariom. It’s an honor I’m even asking you out to dinner. "

He was about to say more when Xavier cut him off. "Stop barking."

Chris’s eyes snapped to Xavier, who had just finished his meal. "What did you just say?"

Xavier wiped his mouth and stared at Chrus, a blank expression on his face. "I told you to stop barking. You’re disturbing my ears."
