Chapter 64: Alpha and Omega

The Alpha Sky Titan’s roar was not just a sound; it was a physical force. It slammed into Ryan like a solid wall, making the air in his lungs vibrate and his bones ache. The entire floating island shook as if it were a leaf in a hurricane.

Ryan didn’t waste a second. He knew his simple knife wouldn’t do much against a beast that used lightning as a blanket. This was not a fight he could win with strength. He had to win it with his brain.

The Titan moved with a speed that was terrifying for something so huge. It opened its massive beak, and a ball of crackling, blindingly bright lightning formed inside. It was like a miniature sun. With another roar, it blasted the lightning ball straight at Ryan.

Ryan’s mind went into overdrive. He pushed off the ground, his Boots of Alacrity giving him a burst of speed that felt like a rocket was strapped to his back.

The world seemed to slow down just a little bit. He dove to the side, rolling behind a huge, jagged rock just as the lightning ball hit the spot where he had been standing.

The explosion was deafening. The ground melted into a pool of glowing, bubbling lava. The rock he was hiding behind glowed red hot and started to crumble.

"Okay," Ryan panted, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Plan A: Don’t get hit. So far, so good."

He peeked out from behind the melting rock. The Titan was already preparing another attack, this time lowering its head to charge. It was going to flatten him like a pancake. He needed a real plan, and he needed it now.

His eyes darted across the Titan’s massive body. He saw it then. Patches of its dark, stormy scales glowed with a soft, internal light.

They pulsed in a steady rhythm, like a heartbeat. He remembered the information from his Weaver’s Gauntlet. Precursor technology... can be controlled...

The Titan was an Anomaly, a creature warped by the god’s strange energy. But maybe, just maybe, its body worked a little bit like a machine.

Ryan focused his mind, channeling his energy into the Weaver’s Gauntlet on his arm. He aimed at one of the glowing scales on the Titan’s shoulder. He activated his "System Override" skill. A thin, almost invisible beam of blue light shot from his gauntlet and hit the scale.

For a second, nothing happened. The Titan continued its charge. Then, the glowing scale flickered, sputtered like a dying lightbulb, and went dark. The scales around it also seemed to weaken, losing their stormy sheen. He had created a weak spot!

It was a small victory, but it was a start. He now had a target.

The Titan charged, and Ryan used his boots to dodge again, this time scrambling up the side of a tall, rocky spire. The Titan crashed into the spire, shaking the whole island and sending a shower of rocks down. Some of the falling rocks were shed scales from its body, still crackling with electricity.

One of the scales, about the size of a dinner plate, landed near him. This was his chance. He reached out with his power, using his Ultimate Infinite Extraction System. A green light flowed from his hand and surrounded the scale.

[Bio-Electric Essence Extracted!]

[You have gained temporary resistance to lightning damage!]

The knowledge flowed into him. He suddenly understood how the Titan’s electricity worked. He felt a strange tingling sensation all over his skin, like static electricity on a fuzzy sweater.

He didn’t have to wait long to test his new power. The Titan, furious that it had missed him, let out another roar and unleashed a massive wave of chain lightning. Yellow and blue tendrils of pure energy shot across the clearing, hitting everything. There was nowhere to run.

Ryan braced himself for the pain. The lightning hit him head-on.

But instead of being turned into a pile of ash, he just felt a powerful jolt. His hair stood straight up on end, and his whole body tingled intensely. It was uncomfortable, but it didn’t kill him. It barely even hurt.

"Well, that’s new," Ryan said, shaking his arms to get the feeling back. The Titan stared at him, its giant lightning eyes blinking in confusion. It had never seen a small, squishy creature survive its storm before.

This confusion gave Ryan another opening. He activated his Chrono-Manipulation talent. "Haste!" he whispered. The world around him slowed to a crawl, while he moved at normal speed. He became a blur, running down the rock spire and across the clearing.

He used his System Override on another glowing scale, this time on the Titan’s leg, creating a second weak spot.

The Titan swung its massive talons at him, but Ryan was ready. "Slow!" he commanded, pointing his gauntlet at the descending foot. The giant talon, big enough to crush a house, moved as if it were sinking through thick honey. It gave Ryan plenty of time to casually step out of the way.

He was now running circles around the giant beast, using his new powers to stay one step ahead. But all these amazing skills used up a lot of his personal energy. He could feel himself getting tired. His gauntlet’s light was starting to dim.

He needed to recharge. The air all around him was thick with the Titan’s power, a fog of crackling electricity. He grinned. It was like being in a restaurant when you’re starving.

He stopped running for a moment and held out his hand. He focused on his Energy Siphon talent. He felt a pull, like a magnet turning on.

The free-floating electricity in the air rushed towards him, flowing into his body and into his gauntlet. It was a warm, powerful feeling, like drinking a dozen cups of coffee at once. The light on his gauntlet shone brightly again. He was fully charged.

"Okay, round two!" he shouted.

The fight became a deadly dance. Ryan would use Haste to get in close, System Override to create a weak point, dodge a massive attack using Slow, and then use Energy Siphon to recharge while the Titan recovered.

He was slowly but surely chipping away at the magnificent beast.

The Alpha Sky Titan was getting desperate. It knew it was losing. It gathered all of its remaining power for one final, massive attack. It spread its colossal wings, and the entire sky above them turned dark. A vortex of storm clouds and lightning formed right above the island.

This was it. The final move.

Ryan knew he had to end this now. He had created several weak spots, but there was one that looked the most promising: a large, glowing scale right in the center of the Titan’s chest, right over its heart.

He took a deep breath. "Haste!"

He sprinted towards the Titan, his poisoned knife in his hand. The world slowed down. The giant storm vortex above began to unleash a rain of lightning bolts. Ryan weaved between them, his enhanced senses and lightning resistance keeping him safe.

He leaped into the air, aiming for the Titan’s chest. The Titan saw him coming and swung a wing to knock him out of the sky.

"Slow!" Ryan commanded, focusing on the wing. The giant wing slowed just enough for him to slip past it.

He landed on the Titan’s chest, his feet finding a hold on the creature’s armored scales. He was standing right on top of the final weak point. He raised his knife high.

With all his strength, he plunged the knife deep into the glowing scale.

For a moment, there was absolute silence.

Then, the Alpha Sky Titan let out a final, shuddering groan. The light in its golden eyes faded. The giant storm vortex in the sky vanished.

The lightning that had danced across its body went out. With a slow, graceful movement, the magnificent creature collapsed, its huge body crashing to the ground with a tremor that shook the island one last time.

Ryan, exhausted but victorious, slid down its side and landed softly on the ground. He had done it. He had defeated an Apex Anomaly, all by himself.

As the Titan’s body began to dissolve into shimmering points of light, two items and a shower of god Points appeared where it had been.

[+2000 god Points!]

[+3 Influence!]

A beautiful, fist-sized crystal dropped to the ground. It looked like a perfect, miniature thunderstorm had been frozen inside it. This was the "Stormheart Crystal." Next to it was a large, ornate chest, pulsing with power. The "Alpha Titan Cache."

Ryan took a moment to catch his breath, then walked over to the humming god Node in the center of the nest. He placed his hand on it. A blue circle of light expanded from his feet, and a timer appeared in his vision: [Capture Time: 59:59].

He had captured Node Gamma.

The CommNets exploded.

In Outpost #7’s private channel, the crowd watching the big screen went completely insane.

Chris "Boulder" Magnus: HE DID IT! HE ACTUALLY DID IT! DID YOU SEE THAT? HE PUNCHED A THUNDER-CHICKEN TO DEATH! RYAN IS THE GREATEST!

Emma "Sage" Thorne: His vitals are stable... He’s okay. I can’t believe it. The tactical probability of him winning that fight alone was less than one percent.

Ace Striker: I never doubted him for a second! It was a flawless execution of a brilliant plan! All hail Governor Stone!

In the Sector-wide CommNet, the reaction was one of stunned, silent disbelief. The chat, which had been full of trash talk and speculation, went quiet for a full thirty seconds. Then, messages started to trickle in.

Zara Khan (Outpost #3): ...How?

Marcus "Gearhead" Cole (Outpost #3): Did... did a single Level 9 player just solo an Apex Anomaly? Is that even possible?

Player (Iron Wolves, Outpost #21): My screen must be broken.

Then, the official announcement from the god Warden echoed across every channel, solidifying the unbelievable truth.

[UNIFICATION CHALLENGE UPDATE]
