Chapter 27: Warned

{While I understand you’re going through a difficult phase, the upcoming trip is important for the semester. If you can, try to join the rest of us.}

Kyle read the message early that morning. It was sent by someone he regarded as more than an acquaintance, yet not quite a friend.

They shared the same class, though they did not spend much time together outside of it.

Kyle sighed and stretched his arms overhead.

Right. This was the most crucial year of his life. The upcoming trip was not just a casual outing. It was an opportunity to explore, to network, and most importantly, to impress the professors.

In that sense, the message was not wrong.

The university still had no idea about Blake’s accident. And it seemed the Astortia family had no intention of letting the news spread, likely due to political complications.

Fortis, the capital city of Guhang, was ruled in influence by three major clans.

Among them, the Astortia clan was the weakest.

At present, the entire weight of that clan rested on one man. His contributions to society, his influence, and most importantly, his role as a Nightwalker were the only reasons the family retained its status.

Blake was the pillar of the Astortia name. The one who ensured they still held one of the three seats within the Ten Petals.

The Ten Petals was a prestigious court where the heads of the ten most powerful clans across the country gathered annually to deliberate on matters of public welfare, trade, exports, and policy.

After all, these ten clans had become the backbone of the nation. Financially dominant and socially influential, their decisions shaped the direction of the country itself.

’Blake’s current condition may not invite direct attacks from the other clans... but he’s still a powerful Nightwalker. That alone could draw the attention of underworld entities while he’s vulnerable.’

Kyle exhaled slowly.

His brother was being moved back to the house today. That meant tighter security, fewer public appearances, and even more silence surrounding the accident.

Kyle had already decided he would attend university today. After finishing his classes, he would head straight home.

Swinging his legs off the bed, he rose and stretched before opening his quest log. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

[Daily Quest:

Push-ups: 0/40

Pull-ups: 0/30

Run: 0/4 km]

Kyle blinked in surprise. "You increased the repetitions in just one day?"

[The host’s body is undergoing a transformation that does not follow conventional mortal limitations. Daily progression is necessary to fully manifest the changes.]

Kyle narrowed his eyes slightly.

"So you’re saying if I slack off, I waste potential?"

[Correct.]

A faint smile tugged at his lips.

"Fine," he muttered, cracking his knuckles. "Then let’s not waste a single day."

He changed his clothes and went out for a run.

He had a lot on his mind but above all was a single name.

Veronica.

He doesn’t know what he saw last night was the actual fact but since no one has come knocking on his door with the intention of capturing him, he believed his observation was right.

Veronica could be trusted for now.

....

[Congratulations, host.]

[You have maintained a two days streak of working out.]

[Reward: Recovery Potion x1]

Kyle held the vial between his fingers. While tossing the fried rice in the wok, he pulled the lid off with his teeth and gulped down the solution.

The familiar minty sweetness spread across his tongue, leaving him refreshed.

As he cooked breakfast, he kept an eye on the time. Classes began at nine, and he still had more than an hour left.

’I need to do the live stream as well once I return.’ He could not help but smile at the thought. Truth be told, he never wanted to stop streaming. Those five viewers were the only connection he had, other than Amanda, with whom he truly felt at ease.

But to prove to his family and everyone else that he was not a complete failure, that he could actually do something with his life, Kyle made the hard choice.

Now, however, things had changed.

Just then, his phone began to buzz.

He took it out and saw a message from his father. Blake had been shifted back to the family house, and he could come see him today.

There was another short message reminding him not to miss classes.

Kyle smiled wryly. Even in these circumstances... well.

He did not reply. He was about to toss the phone onto the bed when it buzzed again, this time in rapid succession.

A call. From an unknown number.

Kyle lowered the flame and walked to the refrigerator as he answered it. "Yes, who is this?" he asked.

[I hope you have not forgotten me already~]

A chill ran down his spine. Veronica.

Kyle narrowed his eyes. "How did you get my number?"

[Oh, dear. Such trivial matters... you really underestimate me.]

Kyle groaned. Great. Just because she worked for the government did not mean she could pry into his privacy whenever she pleased.

Shaking his head, he asked, "What do you need?"

[Nothing. I just wanted to let you know a few things. Do not use Genesis when you are at home.]

Kyle froze. His eyes widened slightly. "What?"

[The officer who came to check on you that day? He requested Gen-sensors to be planted around your house, and I had to agree. You were really going wild that day.]

Kyle leaned against the refrigerator, his left arm crossing over his chest. "I... was not aware."

[Do not worry about that. I have it covered. But I cannot remove the sensors until next week. So for now, only use Genesis at the locations I sent you.]

Kyle let out a quiet hum before pulling the phone away from his ear to check the map she had shared.

The marked spots were close to several popular places, the mall, the arcade, and a few other crowded areas.

[Isolated locations are the worst places to use your powers. Those rifters, I mean the other world dwellers, tend to appear in secluded areas.]

Kyle nodded in understanding. The system had mentioned something similar.

Letting out a soft breath, he asked, "Why are you helping me?"

There was a brief pause before she replied,

[D-Do not misunderstand... I just do not want my toy taken by the authorities. Only I can have absolute command over you.]

Kyle chuckled and shook his head.

He had truly caught the interest of a strange girl.
