Starting With SSS-rank: I Get A New Skill Every Livestream-Chapter 30: Help
Sitting inside the cafeteria, where coffee cost 12 lumir (the currency, about 0.5$ per lumir), Kyle couldn’t help but feel how strange the situation was. It wasn’t something he would have imagined just a few days ago, especially sitting with someone other than Amanda.
The woman across from him was at least a year older than him, or at least she had seemed that way until the other day. But today, dressed casually, she looked more like a university student.
She leaned back against her chair, holding a cup of dark coffee without any sugar.
Now the problem was that Kyle had to remove his mask if he wanted to drink his coffee.
Veronica shook her head. "Do you want me to show you your picture to prove how confident I am about your identity?"
Kyle didn’t argue and finally took off his mask.
Veronica watched him closely, her eyes narrowing. "Not even that handsome to be so secretive."
Kyle shrugged. "Enough to make you go against your organization."
Veronica nearly spilled her coffee after hearing those words.
Kyle casually picked up his cup and took a sip. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Veronica glared at him, though there was no real bite behind it.
"You’re way too smug for someone who failed to even conceal his identity for a single day."
This time, Kyle froze. He narrowed his eyes. "And why do you think it was just for a day? I might have been living in the shadows for quite a while."
Now it was Veronica’s turn to freeze.
She sat there, completely still, at a loss for both words and reaction. She simply stared at him.
’System... can you analyze her emotions?’
[Analyzing...]
[Slight flicker of the little finger, eyes parted slightly... possibly anxious and uncertain.]
Kyle already knew Veronica was hiding many secrets, but this reaction was unexpected. From what he could tell, she seemed certain that he had only awakened his powers a couple of days ago.
He didn’t push the matter and instead asked, "Why did you call me here?"
It took her a few moments, but she finally calmed herself and muttered, "I want to tell you a few things about us."
Kyle nodded and remained silent.
Veronica glanced around. Thankfully, the café was relatively empty, so no one was listening to their conversation.
She finally began, "The organization we work for is called the Paranormal Suppression Corps. Our role is to ensure that none of the Knull residents disturb public order and that the Aether world remains hidden from the general masses."
Kyle nodded as she continued.
"Now, there are certain codes of conduct we can never break, or we would face severe consequences. At best, we would be fired. At worst, we would be imprisoned."
"And one of those rules is failing to report a rogue Nightwalker to the Corps."
Kyle was taken aback. "Are you trying to say that you’re taking a huge risk by telling me all this instead of reporting me to the government?"
Veronica had expected that conclusion, but she shook her head. "That wasn’t my intention. I want you to understand that when revealing your identity as a Nightwalker, you have to be extremely careful. Because of your actions, you are already registered as a rogue Nightwalker."
Kyle suddenly felt his throat turning dry, so he took the last sip of his drink and asked, "What if they catch me? Will they force me to become an officer like you?"
Veronica sighed. Choosing her words carefully so as not to scare him, she replied, "They would first interrogate you about how you managed to keep your presence hidden until now. Then they would ask about your skills, and based on that... they might recruit you or..."
"Imprison me," he added.
Veronica nodded. "The government is very strict when it comes to decisions regarding the Aether world."
Kyle felt a trace of unease. He had awakened late, something he believed was unnatural in their world. Then there was his skill. God’s Eye was an overpowered ability and something he would much rather keep to himself. Not to mention being forced to work for an organization. No, he wasn’t sure if he could accept that.
Kyle had actually considered telling his parents about this... but now, he had to be careful. His father seemed like the kind of person who would rather sacrifice his son than let the family’s reputation suffer.
With his mother, things were unpredictable.
But with his brother? Kyle had a strong feeling that only Blake could keep this secret. Even so, he wouldn’t rush into that decision.
Kyle finally looked up and stared at Veronica for a few seconds.
Then he asked in a soft voice, "Can you tell me something truthfully?"
Veronica’s brows lifted slightly as she gave a brief nod and finished her drink.
Kyle rested his hands on the table before asking, "Why... why are you doing all this for me? You’re strong, you hold a high position in the organization, and you have a lot to lose. And yet... you’re risking it all to help me. It can’t be because you want to use me. I know I’m not that valuable."
Veronica fell silent.
She lowered her gaze, her fingers interlocking in her lap.
Of course, he would question her actions, no matter how carefully she tried to hide her intentions.
Veronica finally let out a sigh and spoke. "Just know that... this isn’t the first time we’ve met. We’ve had interactions in the past too, but they weren’t significant enough for you to remember me."
Kyle sighed. "How could I forget someone with such pretty hair?"
Veronica stiffened, her ears faintly turning red. "That’s quite the way you chose to compliment me."
Kyle shrugged. "I could praise you more directly too. Let’s start with your lips—"
"Okay, stop now!" She quickly raised her hands to stop him.
Kyle chuckled and shook his head. "Thanks, Veronica. You’re helping me a lot."
