Starting With SSS-rank: I Get A New Skill Every Livestream-Chapter 41: You are disgusting
It had been half an hour, and Amanda still hadn’t left.
Kyle sighed as he peeked through the peephole. She was still there, leaning against the guard rail with her head lowered.
He stepped back into the room and told Veronica in a low voice, "She isn’t leaving anytime soon."
Veronica muttered, "But why is she here?" The silver-haired woman wasn’t sure whether Kyle already knew that Amanda was a Nightwalker and came to check on him because of the incident.
However, he answered, "How would I know? She has been acting strange ever since we broke up."
It seemed he still didn’t know.
Veronica paused. She had purposely never told Kyle about the possible reason behind their breakup.
As the commanding officer of Ethan’s team, she knew Amanda had spent far more time with her squad members during the past few months. That might have been the reason things fell apart between them.
However, Veronica chose to stay silent about it.
"What are you going to do now?" she asked, leaning back in her chair.
Kyle let out a quiet sigh. He couldn’t keep Veronica here the entire night, and if he didn’t come out, Amanda would never leave, no matter what he told her.
In the end, he said, "I’ll go talk to her. Once she leaves, you can go too."
"I... don’t mind staying the night," Veronica suddenly said, though the hesitation in her voice was obvious. Suggesting something like that had clearly left her flustered as well.
Kyle shook his head and didn’t bother arguing.
He opened his wardrobe and pulled on a thick hoodie to cover his wounds, along with a fresh pair of trousers to erase any trace of blood. Veronica had already wrapped bandages around his knee, so no new stains would ruin his clothes.
As he walked toward the door, he took several deep breaths.
Turning slightly, he glanced over his shoulder and said, "Umm... stay quiet?"
Even as he said it, he wasn’t sure if it was necessary. Amanda was no longer his girlfriend, so it shouldn’t matter if he had brought another woman home.
Veronica didn’t respond. She simply sat there.
Her expression left him a little confused, but he didn’t linger on it. Instead, he opened the door.
The girl on the other side instantly flinched at the clicking sound.
Her brows slowly lifted, her eyes widening.
Kyle’s heart had already been restless before opening the door, but now, looking into those bright eyes and the concern within them, he knew he wouldn’t forget this moment anytime soon.
"Ky... le."
She suddenly stepped forward, staggering slightly, and wrapped her arms around him.
Kyle neither pushed her away nor stopped her as she hugged him tightly, her chin resting on his shoulder while quiet sobs escaped her.
"Kyle... Kyle..."
She kept repeating his name over and over as she cried.
Kyle had no idea what exactly was going on, but there was no guilt in her expression. No. What he saw was pure concern, as if she had been terrified of losing him.
He frowned.
It couldn’t be that she had seen him near the construction site, right? There had been no civilians around at that time.
Then why was she so worried about him? 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Amanda slowly pulled away, her eyes still wet as she spoke.
"I was really worried about you. I... I tried, I promise. I tried not to disturb you, b-but there are things I can’t control."
Kyle simply stared at her in silence.
The raw emotions in her eyes made it seem as though she was still devoted to him.
As though she still cared.
But wanting a more rational judgment, he asked the system, ’Analyze her facial expression. Is she being truthful?’
Genesis activated, and in an instant the system examined everything: the faint twitch of her lips, the trembling of her eyes, her broken syllables, the way her throat moved when she swallowed.
The final analysis matched exactly what his own eyes had been telling him.
[She is extremely anxious and concerned right now, host.]
Kyle let out a slow breath and finally spoke.
"Why, Amanda? Why do you care about me? Even if it was just your imagination, why can’t you treat me like someone who has nothing to do with you anymore?"
Amanda lowered her head and muttered softly, "Because... that’s impossible for me. You are my first love, Kyle. You showed me how beautiful this feeling can be. You taught me what it means to care about someone so deeply that even a small scratch on them can make your heart restless."
Kyle clenched his fist, frustration building in his chest.
"Then why didn’t you think about that when you cheated on me with Ethan?"
Amanda instantly looked up and shook her head. "I swear, Kyle, there is nothing between us. He is just my acquaintance. Trust me."
Kyle scoffed. "Oh yeah? Then why did you never let me see those texts he sent? Why did you lie about your aunt getting into an accident? And those nights when you told me you were going to bed early because it had been a hectic day? You think I don’t understand those signs, Amanda?"
The raven-haired girl sniffled, suddenly at a loss for words.
She truly couldn’t tell him the real reason behind those lies. If she did, she wouldn’t just be putting herself in danger, but Kyle as well.
And if she claimed he was simply overthinking things, she would be lying to him.
Silence settled between them.
After a moment, Kyle shook his head and muttered, "Go away, Amanda. Just as I thought, the more we talk, the uglier things will get. It’s better if you stop worrying about me and focus on your own life."
He took a step back and turned away.
Amanda suddenly grabbed his hand. The grip was weak, trembling, almost hesitant.
Her soft, quivering voice reached his ears.
"Kyle... there can be no one for me but you. Please... give me another chance."
Kyle closed his eyes and pulled his hand free.
"We’re far past the point of talking things out, Amanda. Don’t come back here again. Your face is repulsive."
Click
With that, he stepped inside and shut the door behind him.
And for the first time, Kyle regretted having these powers.
Because with his heightened senses, he could hear it clearly.
Amanda was crying.
His own eyes grew moist, but he refused to let the tears fall.
He couldn’t allow himself to weaken now. She deserved this.
There could be no compromise. Once his trust was broken, there was no going back.
Shaking his head, he decides to head inside his room, when suddenly,
[Host, while analyzing the target, the system discovered something else as well.]
Kyle frowned but then denied, ’No, I don’t want to know-’
[She is a Nightwalker.]
"...!!"
