Chapter 47: Seating arrangement

Fucked up, was it? He had used Amanda’s name out of the blue because she was the only alibi he could trust in this situation.

Last night, Kyle realized that Amanda didn’t come from a normal household. Her clan carried a quiet authority, to the point that other clans saw her as the bridge to connect with her clan.

For a moment, Kyle considered blurting out Veronica’s name, but that would have been completely absurd. Veronica had nothing to do with him. She was a Commander in PSC, while he was just a random college student. Using her name would only have made Blake more suspicious.

’But now that I think about it... even my believable lie didn’t seem to work,’ Kyle muttered as he walked down the street, heading toward the station.

[Host, your brother had been using Genesis most of the time when you two conversed. The system analyzed the target’s aether channel, and there is a high probability that your brother possesses an ocular ability.]

Kyle gave a wry smile. ’We really are brothers, huh?’

Blake hadn’t pressed him further, and Kyle hoped it would stay that way.

But there was a high chance Blake might ask Amanda about the potions later, not directly, but in a roundabout way. Blake was good at that.

’Things will only get more complicated if I don’t explain this to Amanda. But how?’ Chatting online was out of the question, and meeting her offline was... difficult.

So what could he do?

.....

Ethan was frustrated and desperate. Tomorrow, a banquet was being held between the five leading clans of Fortis.

Apart from the Ten Petal Clans, there were branch families, clans that had been demoted or had risen into recognition through their personnel, leadership, or wealth.

These smaller clans were categorized as Branch Fragments.

Clans like Maylith and Lockhart were among these Branch Fragments. In Fortis, there were only five of them, and the good part was that they all got along fairly well.

Alongside working for the government and public welfare, their unspoken goal had always been to become one of the Petals.

So these banquets were arranged not only to share experiences but also to discuss how they might replace someone on the throne.

And right now, the clan on everyone’s hit list was the Astortia clan, one of the weakest, burdened with numerous stains.

With the only strong sorcerer of the family lying on his deathbed, Ethan could only imagine how fierce today’s meeting would be.

However, he wasn’t anxious or excited about that.

He had been asked by his mother to bring Amanda with him tomorrow. She wanted the other clans to see that, above all, Lockhart shared the strongest bond with the Maylith clan.

And there was a reason behind her desperation. Just like the Astortia clan among the Petals, the Lockharts were also near the bottom of the ranking, even more so after the death of Ethan’s father, the former patriarch.

That was why Ethan had to do everything in his power to convince Amanda today.

Even if he had to resort to underhanded methods, he would do it.

"Hey, you good?" Hannah asked, nudging his shoulder.

Ethan gave a slow nod before asking, "Hey, mind changing seats today? I want to discuss something with Amanda."

Amanda usually sat with Clara and Hannah beside Ethan. But today, he wanted to spend as much time as possible with her.

Hannah hummed in surprise, then narrowed her eyes. What was with him? On usual days he acts like a complete simp for Layena, and now he was aiming for Amanda?

The golden-haired boy turned to her, his eyes wide and innocent, a pleading look settling on his face as he said, "Please?"

Hannah’s heart skipped a beat at that expression. She coughed and stood up. "Well, whatever. Just don’t let her hit me. I already know Amanda’s going to be mad about this seating arrangement."

Ethan briefly smiled but soon that smile vanished.

Kyle walked into the classroom, and for a brief moment, their eyes met.

Ethan felt nothing but repulsion at the sight of that seaweed-haired bastard.

He couldn’t find a single quality in him that made him better. His face was average, his body wasn’t even close to being as well-built as Ethan’s, he wasn’t active in anything, his academics were nothing special, and he even had a few freckles.

Didn’t women hate guys who looked like that? Then what did Amanda even see in him?

’Look at that bastard...’ Kyle inwardly snickered as he noticed Ethan glaring at him.

After everything he had heard from Veronica yesterday, he finally understood why Ethan had always been so wary of him.

Ethan had been aiming for Amanda for the sake of his clan, but she had never responded to his advances because of Kyle. And even now, after their breakup, Ethan didn’t seem any closer to her. If anything, they felt even more distant.

Ignoring it, Kyle walked to his seat and sat down.

He exchanged a nod with the student beside him, a bespectacled girl, before taking out his books.

Most of the class had already arrived, except for Amanda, and of course, the teacher hadn’t shown up yet.

Kyle was still thinking about how to talk to her when suddenly, two people entered the classroom. One of them was a young, beautiful raven-haired girl who immediately drew sighs of admiration.

She wore dark blue denim jeans that hugged her long legs perfectly, paired with a white top with cropped shoulders.

With her hair tied in a ponytail, she gave off a youthful and charming vibe, someone who looked like she belonged on a runway.

Amanda glanced at Kyle from the corner of her eye, and to her surprise, he was already looking back at her.

For a brief moment, it felt as if only the two of them existed, the rest of the world fading from view.

Amanda’s eyes slowly turned round as she nearly came to a halt.

But then, the teacher coughed and said, "Alright, students, due to Amanda’s recent eyesight report, her seating arrangement will be changed."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed while Kyle’s lips parted in shock.

It couldn’t be...could it? She wouldn’t go as far as to bribe the faculty, right?
