The Hymn was separated by ranks, with each ranking having a different mantra. Azrael opened the Hymn that would allow him to advance from F Rank to E Rank and read through it quickly.

Hymn to the Divine Immortal Soul.

That in the midst of turmoil and carnage,

In the uncertainty of the future and despair of the past,

I fear not the corruption of my own spirit.

For I know who I am.

And I am who I am.

Azrael read through it a second time, and then a third time to make sure he memorized all of it. He then read the instructions below.

As you say the mantra, remember not to focus on the words. Instead, let your focus be on your Divine Core and the Divine Essence held within it as you become more in tune with yourself. Slowly rotate the Divine Essence and allow the mantra to guide you through the process of using the Divine Essence to expand and destroy your core, so that it may be reborn stronger.

The mantra is nothing but a road for you to follow. The only one capable of walking that road is you. The mantra will guide your steps as you move forward.

Azrael calmed his heartbeat and slowed his breathing as he closed his eyes. The mantra seemed easy enough to understand, and Azrael repeated the words in his mind as he allowed his consciousness to flow towards his Divine Core.

The Divine Core was located directly beside the heart in the center of the chest. When Azrael tried to feel for the core, there was some sort of heat that traveled across his body, telling him that his core was reacting to him as well.

The Divine Core was an orb-like construct that seemed to float gently in the middle of empty space. Azrael sent his consciousness to touch it, and he felt his hold on it slip once he tried to grasp it. Azrael tried again, and this time, he was finally able to wrap his consciousness around it.

The core was filled with Divine Essence to the point that it was nearly cracking from the intense weight. The demigods were taught in middle school that they had to be sure not to overfill their Divine Core all at once with Divine Essence. If they did something like that, then the Divine Core could end up rupturing prematurely, forcing them to rank up in an unnatural way. This rank-up would not only destroy their cultivation, but it would also make it twice as hard for them to use their God Aspect. All the benefits that they could gain from ranking up naturally would be lost, and the only way to repair the Divine Core was by going through the Litanany of Ascension like normal.

But since you already broke the core, you would have to recite the hymn for close to three times longer than normal to get the same result. And only after constantly nurturing the core for a long time would you be able to finally continue cultivating as normal.

This phenomenon was so rare that it was hardly spoken about other than in passing. Unless a demigod fought against and killed multiple lesser Daemons in a very short time, they didn't have to worry about filling their core too quickly. And by the time a demigod gets older, they would already be so in tune with their divine core that they didn't have to worry about filling up their core unconsciously. They would understand and properly regulate how much Divine Essence they absorb.

It was only because Azrael had been on a killing spree recently that his core was so close to bursting. If he had killed even one more Divine being before now, then there was a high chance that his core would have burst.

Also, since Azrael had an EX potential that gave him 100% absorption, his core tended to fill up far faster than other demigods. The other demigods with lower absorption rates were more worried about their core not filling up quickly enough than they were about it filling up too fast.

Azrael felt the Divine Essence in his core slowly start to obey his command as it rotated about inside the core. It was like a whirlpool slowly forming at the middle of an ocean, and as the water raged, it slammed against the border of the Divine Core constantly.

Azrael repeated the Hymn in his mind and allowed his body to relax as his mind emptied of all thoughts. The mantra's words repeated in his heart, and as it played over, Azrael could feel his Divine Essence reacting to the changes in his consciousness. The understanding he gained from the mantra made him dive deeper into a state of zen, and the more he relaxed, the stronger the currents became.

Azrael felt his subconscious combing over the words of the mantra like it was searching for the meaning underneath it all.

The Hymns created by the demigod for the Litany of Ascension were nothing but a tool that would allow you to walk the right path on the Litany. The true essence of the Litany of Ascension was the understanding of yourself, and as you move further along the Hymns and Litany, you not only become more in tune with yourself, but also with your core.

The first Hymn was created as a way to allow all young demigods to realize who they were. Before you can think about understanding yourself, you must first know yourself. You must know that you exist as flesh and bone and spirit. The very principle of who makes you the person that you are must be revealed by your own efforts.

The Hymn was engineered in such a way that anyone who constantly meditates over it would undoubtedly begin to ask questions about who they were and their own core principles.

These questions would lead you to dive deeper into your own mind for the answers.

At the end of the first phase of the Litany, when you are close to ranking up, it is believed that you would have finally discovered who it is that you are at your very core.

Azrael stayed in a meditative position without moving. The feeling of his Divine Essence rotating around his core and slamming against the walls was the only thing he focused on.

The words of the Hymn replayed in his head, making him slowly try to decipher it even as he focused on the Divine Essence.

By the time Azrael started to feel the first pangs of hunger, he opened his eyes and blinked as sound returned to him.

"Hey, don't touch him. I think he's training."

"Oh, like that meditation stuff they told us about in class? I thought that was a joke."

"You were sleeping through that class, you don't even know what I'm talking about."

"Are you sure that's what he's doing? I think he's just sleeping. He'll get a crazy neck pain from—Holy shit, you're awake!"

Azrael looked around at all his roommates who were surrounding him. Thomas was the one who had almost tried to shake him awake, and he was currently lying on his ass after being surprised by Azrael waking up.

Azrael looked at his phone and was shocked to see that it was already six in the evening. What the hell? It was morning when he closed his eyes! That meant he was out for close to eight hours!?

The Hymn that Azrael used for the Litany had completely sucked him away from the real world, making his consciousness and awareness cut itself off from everything happening around him.

This was something that happened to every young demigod as they began using the Hymns for the first time.
