Chapter 19: Being 'Generous'

The next day, Han Yu met his companions and followed his usual routine of reducing the 'burden' of money from his customers.

He didn't tell his companions about his encounter with the ghost, as he wished to keep the 'secret master' a secret. Then there was also the matter of beast meat.

'If Fat Kui finds out about it, he'll pester me nonstop to get some for himself. And if he learns that I get it for free, he'll definitely come along with me,' Han Yu thought to himself. 'And considering his antics, Mr. Ghost will definitely kill him and turn him into a ghost that'll then continue to haunt me for my entire life!'

Just the thought of seeing Fat Kui standing over him while he was in the embrace of a pretty lady made Han Yu shiver.

'Nope! Definitely can't let that happen!' Han Yu thought with determination.

Dan Hu was another problem. Unlike Fat Kui, who would want to eat the meat himself, Dan Hu was money-minded and would see a business opportunity. If he found out, he'd immediately start scheming ways to sell the free beast meat, which would be a disaster. Not only would it invite the attention of the beast meat vendors, but also the hunters.

They would quickly question the source of it all and might even go after Han Yu. Selling beast meat wasn't as simple as setting up a stall on the street.

First, they would have to pay for a license from the authorities, who would then check the source of the meat before levying the required taxes. And there was no way Han Yu was going to deal with that much paperwork.

'If my plan was just to stay in town, it might be possible, but I want to go to the sect. It would be far too much work for something I'd have to abandon anyway,' Han Yu thought.

But as he was deep in his thoughts, his friends had been calling out to him.

"Han Yu! Hey, Han Yu!" Fat Kui and Dan Hu called.

"Huh?" Han Yu snapped out of his thoughts and looked at them. "What?"

"Were you thinking about the pretty girls from the Rose River Pavilion?" Fat Kui asked, waggling his eyebrows. "You were really deep in thought."

"What? No!" Han Yu denied immediately.

"He sure was," Dan Hu chuckled. "Look at him getting red."

"I'm not!" Han Yu shook his head furiously.

"What else would distract you from money?" Dan Hu asked. "Come on, let's finish counting this."

"Yeah, I need to go back early. Dad brought in a large pile of trash that I need to sort through," Fat Kui grumbled, dreading the work.

"Alright." Han Yu sighed, eager to wrap things up quickly.

After splitting their spoils, he hurried off to do his daily 'delivery' and collect his payment.

As he approached the liquor shop, a thought struck him.

'Hmm... should I buy him something better today?' Han Yu wondered. 'I didn't get as much money as before, but it's decent now that I don't need to spend more on beast meat.'

Last time, he had bought the cheapest wine available, which was closer to paint stripper than anything meant for human consumption.

After a long, dramatic internal debate that lasted half an hour, Han Yu finally decided to be generous and bought the second-cheapest wine.

"I'm so good," Han Yu said to himself proudly, practically beaming.

But just as he was leaving, his nose picked up the scent of spices from a nearby shop.

"Wait! This might be a better purchase!" Han Yu's eyes lit up. 'I can enjoy this too!'

Normally, he ate the beast meat as plain stew or roasted over an open fire, with just salt and pepper. But now that he had money, he could afford to be extravagant.

"Shopkeep, give me a set of assorted spices!" Han Yu announced, feeling important.

"Oh? The whole set?" The shopkeeper raised a skeptical eyebrow. It wasn't every day that someone looking as scrappy as Han Yu waltzed in demanding luxury items.

"Yep!" Han Yu nodded, puffing up his chest.

"Alright, that'll be three silvers." The shopkeeper said, clearly expecting Han Yu to back out.

Clink.

The shopkeeper's eyes widened as Han Yu slapped down the money without hesitation, grabbed the spice set, and scurried off, clutching it to his chest like a dragon hoarding treasure.

The shopkeeper stared at his retreating figure in disbelief.

"What has the world come to... even the beggars are buying spices like lords now?"

Han Yu, blissfully unaware of the existential crisis he had caused, hurried to his hideout. He carefully divided the spices in half.

'I shouldn't carry all of them with me. Or the ghostly man might think I have a lot of money,' Han Yu thought with prudence.

With that done, he picked up the rest of the beast meat he had left.

'May as well bring this over and let the man eat it. We'll make fresh meat with the spices.' Han Yu rationalized. 'Better than letting it dry out here.'

Fresh spiced meat was a luxury he couldn't ignore.

Just as he was about to leave his hideout, he suddenly remembered something.

"Wait! I almost forgot!" Han Yu spun around and rummaged through the junk pile in the corner of his hideout.

After a minute of dedicated digging, he pulled out an old stick. It looked like it had once been a spear, but its tip had long since broken off. He also grabbed a basket.

"At least I'll have an excuse for Guard Shen this time," Han Yu muttered.

He had been slipping past the town guards for a while now, each time with a new, increasingly ridiculous excuse. He was starting to worry that if this kept up, he'd run out of believable lies and end up saying something completely absurd like, "I'm here on a divine mission to deliver food to a benevolent ghost."

'No way would they believe that,' he thought grimly. 'Even I don't believe that!'
