Chapter 335: Target?

William went back to his breakfast like nothing had happened. The other students did the same. A few still glanced at him now and then, but no one dared to approach him again.

"Why do they hate me so much? Is it because I hurt their feelings?" thought William.

He remembered telling the class he was sure he could beat all the teachers in a fight. Did that make them see him differently?

If that was the reason, then their pride was too much. William hadn’t meant to be arrogant. He was just being honest and confident in his skills.

After breakfast, William stood up and picked up the paper the principal had given him.

Next class is in 30 minutes...

The paper listed all his classes for the day and the coming weeks, as long as nothing changed soon.

But things didn’t always go as planned, especially at a big place like the magic academy.

What if another teacher got sick and William had to cover their classes? What if classes were canceled for an event? Student fights were common at the nearby academies.

But something else was about to change the academy’s routine. It was so big that it shook the whole city.

On his way to the gymnasium for class, William noticed something strange.

One of the academy guards was behind the gym, hidden among the trees and bushes. William noticed him only because of his sharp senses. Otherwise, he would have missed him.

"What is that guy doing there?" William thought as he stared at the man for a few seconds.

The guard wasn’t looking at him. He stood with his back against the tree.

William walked over, curious about what the guard was doing. Now that he was a teacher, he had more authority, so no one would think his actions were odd.

No one noticed him there. The students were still eating or hanging out before class. Only William and the guard were around.

"Excuse me," William said quietly. "Is everything alright?"

William walked around the tree to face the man. He saw a smile on the guard’s face, not an ordinary one, but a look of reverence.

"Sir, I’m so happy to finally meet you," the guard said. "I’ve heard you might join the council? That’s incredible!"

William wasn’t naive. He knew someone from the necromancer cult was in the academy, waiting for him. The guard would be his ally in whatever came next, though William didn’t know the details yet.

"Oh, so you’re my contact?" William asked.

"Yes, but there are others here. We have to work together to make things happen. I’ll give you your instructions. Don’t talk to me again, sir. We can’t risk blowing our cover."

The guard handed William a note and left without another word. William stayed where he was.

William still had to wait for his class, and since he was already hidden among the vegetation, he decided to take a look at the note.

What would his next instructions be? William’s heart beat faster. He had no idea what to expect.

The necromancer cult wanted to get inside the magic academies, and there were plenty of reasons. Maybe they were after something specific, or maybe they just wanted to weaken the schools and slowly take over the kingdom.

But when he read the note, the instructions were nothing like what he expected.

They wanted William to kill one of the teachers!

That was just too much. If a teacher died, there would be a full investigation. It would be a big deal for the academy. The last time a teacher was killed was decades ago.

"Are they trying to screw me over?" William wondered.

He checked the note several times. It was real. The cult’s hidden stamp was at the edge of the paper. No one could fake that.

William didn’t like where the instructions were taking him, but he followed them anyway. He needed to keep the cult happy if he wanted to join the council.

The spells he was learning with the cult were too valuable to give up. It was the best way for him to get stronger, so why risk losing that?

"The note does say the teacher I must kill, weird."

If the cult only wanted to weaken the academy or set William up, they would have let him pick any teacher to kill. But that wasn’t what they wanted.

There was a specific name on the note. William still had to figure out the names of all the teachers at that academy. Some of them rarely appeared in public, so he would need to do some research to find the right target.

It wasn’t a big deal at all. According to the instructions, William didn’t need to rush the killing. In fact, it was the opposite. The cult wanted him to plan everything so nothing bad would happen.

The teacher he had to kill was still a powerful mage in the academy. It wouldn’t be an easy task, even with William’s skills.

Killing the teacher was not the only problem. The kill had to be untraceable, and that was the hardest part.

"I’ll think about this later," thought William as he walked away from the trees.

That was something to think about in the future when he had free time.

William had a class to prepare. Students were depending on him. So, he went to the gymnasium. Inside, William found a place to sit down and relax until the students started showing up.

That would be their first class, so William would go with the basics of not just combat but body-enhancing magic, too. Most students of the academy used that type of magic. It was a common trait in the kingdom’s army.

A few students started showing up. This time, they didn’t do anything funny when they saw William. Every single one of them sat on the mattress and waited, not muttering a word.

After the first class, the whole academy knew of William. No one wanted to get him on his bad side, especially during their first class.

Perhaps in the future, if the students earned William’s trust, then they might do something funny or talk more during classes, but that wouldn’t happen during the first.

As the minutes passed, the whole class showed up.

William introduced himself, though everyone already knew him. Then, before doing anything else, he checked the students’ level. That was mandatory to make sure he was going in the right direction when teaching them.

The reason he was there as a teacher wasn’t that. He was a spy. But William couldn’t give shitty classes and make students’ lives harder. Their first year was the most important.

The classes lasted a long time now that the principal wanted to increase the first-year classes with William. When the afternoon came, William felt tired. Not physically, as his body was too strong, but mentally.

And while some teachers might have the luxury to rest after working the whole day, William couldn’t. He needed to learn more about the teachers to identify his target.

So, William went to the library for a chat with the librarian, hoping to learn more about the teachers without raising too much suspicion.
