Super Soldier in the City-Chapter 2115 - 2178: The Little Girl
Of course, there were people who didn’t listen, like Zhang Daitao after he was beaten. He originally wanted to retaliate against Li Yifei, but he held back and made some calls to dig into Li Yifei’s background, only to find out how terrifying the person who beat him was. This made him reconsider his thoughts of revenge, though he still spread a lot of bad words about Li Yifei to city and provincial leaders throughout the morning. Next, he intended to file a formal complaint, waiting for the Central Government leaders to arrive so he could continue his accusations.
So when he heard Li Yifei’s words, he didn’t believe them, especially since he had learned half an hour ago that the dam was very safe, even possibly blocked. Therefore, he directly shouted to his subordinates, "Nobody moves, continue the rescue operations! These guys are not professional anyway, it’s better if they leave; we must rescue every one of our villagers!"
While speaking, he even considered leading by example, grabbing a shovel he hadn’t used much to rescue people, though he didn’t know where anyone was buried.
Li Yifei, before getting into his car, heard him, paused, and honestly, he didn’t want to deal with him. But if those hundred soldiers stayed here, when the water came rushing in, it would be too late to escape, and who knows how many innocent people might die. Thinking of this, Li Yifei slammed the car door shut and ordered his people to drive off first, then he strode towards Zhang Daitao.
"What are you doing?" Zhang Daitao saw Li Yifei, immediately raised his shovel, and took a defensive stance.
Li Yifei really wanted to kick him, but seeing provincial leaders coming over, he said coldly, "I just heard a loud noise; it might be the upstream dam collapsing. If you don’t want to die, hurry up and leave!"
"Dam collapse? Haha, you’re crazy." Zhang Daitao sneered, "I just made a call; they said everything’s fine up there. You’re talking about a dam collapse; there must be something wrong with your brain!"
"Say one more word, and I’ll kill you!" Li Yifei suddenly lowered his voice threateningly, then shouted, "Believe it or not, but these soldiers must leave. If you want to rescue people, you can stay here and continue rescuing!"
"You!" Zhang Daitao was startled by Li Yifei. His skills were strong, even being the Flying Hawk Squad’s captain, which Zhang Daitao had found out by asking around. Naturally, he wouldn’t openly clash with him. Hearing Li Yifei’s words, he somewhat believed that the other might resort to violence, so he couldn’t help stepping back a few paces as Li Yifei said, "Evacuate immediately! I’m ordering you to run to a safe place, immediately, right now!"
"You, you! What gives you the right to command my soldiers? Li Yifei, you’re causing chaos!" Zhang Daitao shouted angrily, stamping his feet in frustration.
Unfortunately, Li Yifei ignored him, addressing others, "The dam up there has likely collapsed. Once the flood rushes down here, you’ll all die. Saving lives is important, but not at the cost of your own. Besides, after a night’s search here, there’s almost no one alive left!"
"Nonsense, Li Yifei, shut up! How do you know no one is alive here? If someone is buried and seriously injured, waiting for our rescue, and you evacuate now, they’ll die tragically under the ruins!"
"I’ve said so. You can stay if you want, but I’m leaving!" Li Yifei squinted at Zhang Daitao. Maybe he wanted to leave too, but he’d set a trap for him before leaving. Li Yifei wouldn’t fall for it. Since he hadn’t searched every piece of rubble, he couldn’t confirm if no one was there. So after saying that, Li Yifei simply walked away.
Those soldiers hesitated for a moment, then someone said, "Leader, I think I also heard a noise earlier, coming from upstream. Should we leave too?"
"Leave? Hearing noises? Why didn’t I hear anything!" Naturally, Zhang Daitao denied it, and while he truly hadn’t heard anything, he wouldn’t admit that he had some hearing issues, especially after being slapped by Li Yifei that morning, which caused some ringing in his ears.
"It really was. If it’s a dam collapse, we’ll be in danger!" some soldiers replied.
Zhang Daitao’s face was stormy, his eyes shifting as he said, "Whoever wants to leave can go. I’ll deal with you later."
Li Yifei had already taken off on a disaster victim’s motorcycle, speeding away. As he passed the provincial leaders, he explained the situation, just as one was about to accuse Li Yifei of paranoia, their phone rang. After listening for a few seconds, their face changed dramatically, urgently shouting, "Everyone, run! Everyone evacuate. The dam upstream has just collapsed. Quick, go, everyone!"
Li Yifei found this person was decent; at least he didn’t let the leaders leave first. Instead, he urged everyone to get into cars or run towards the mountains. Eventually, a few leaders were left without cars, and Li Yifei got off, giving his spot to two leaders, then ran towards the mountain with the mayor.
There were soldiers ahead, while Zhang Daitao drove past them in a car, visibly dodging when he saw Li Yifei.
Li Yifei sneered at him, thinking how such a despicable person hadn’t drowned.
Almost everyone made it up the mountain or reached a safe place. From a high point, they watched a wave-like flood surge down from upstream, reaching over ten meters high, like a tsunami. Had they been downstream, who knows how much destruction would have ensued. Fortunately, Li Yifei had detected it early, enabling many to escape first, even without cars, relying solely on their legs.
Rumbling sounds accompanied the flood, which swept away everything in its path—the mountains, trees, anything encountered—crushed instantly. Houses spared until then fell apart upon impact with the waves.
Li Yifei had experienced tsunamis and water tornadoes, but this scene was unprecedented, truly heart-shocking, leaving a feeling of helplessness. Even someone like him felt it, as did the ordinary citizens, some of whom collapsed, powerless to watch the scene unfold.
The once peaceful area was now a vast expanse of water. Whatever remained was irretrievable.
Many couldn’t help but cry. Li Yifei sat heavily on the ground, white breath coming from his mouth. The water below steamed with white vapors, and someone tugged his arm. Turning, he saw a little girl looking at him, squeezing out a smile and timidly calling him "Uncle."
Li Yifei recognized the pretty little girl, someone he had saved the previous night by swimming over a hundred meters to rescue her from a tree. She wore a large cotton coat, her cheeks were flushed, and she had dimples when she smiled.
"It’s you. So, have you eaten?" Li Yifei asked with a smile.
"Yes, I had instant noodles, braised beef flavor!" the little girl replied.
Li Yifei deliberately licked his lips, saying, "Nice, my favorite flavor."
"Uncle, have you eaten?"
"Not yet, but I will soon!"
"Oh, Uncle, thank you for saving me!" the little girl blinked and said.
"You’re welcome; Uncle should do that."
"It’s not obligatory. Mom said no one owes me anything, and I should be grateful for all help given. While I can’t repay now, I should store this gratitude for the future," the little girl said earnestly.
Li Yifei chuckled, nodding, "Your mom’s right. But there’s no need to repay Uncle. When you grow up, help those in need when you can."
"Okay." The little girl sniffled and nodded vigorously.
Li Yifei then asked, "Have you found your mom and dad?" It was a painful question, given unknown numbers of parents losing children or vice versa. Despite rescuing many, a portion remained missing or were dead, like the elderly rescued last night.
The little girl shook her head, "Mom and dad are gone."
"Hmm? They..." Li Yifei’s eyes widened.
"No... Dad died when I was young, and mom passed last month from illness..." The little girl said, her eyes reddening, turning away and quickly wiping her tears.
Li Yifei hadn’t expected that, hurriedly apologizing, "Sorry, Uncle didn’t know. So... you live with your grandparents, or..."
"No more. I lived alone in a small house on the mountain. Yesterday, my aunt gave me a piece of meat, and I was cooking when the mountain shook. I climbed the old tree in front of the door, and it took me down to the water. Luckily, the tree didn’t fall, or else..."
Li Yifei gritted his teeth. From yesterday until now, his emotions were tense. Hearing the little girl, Li Yifei felt deep empathy. His parents were gone too, but he was older then, capable of self-care. Yet the little girl seemed only twelve or thirteen, alone at such a young age. She was lucky to have met Li Yifei; otherwise, she wouldn’t have survived the icy water, drifting unknowing, becoming a frozen corpse, perhaps discovered as spring bloomed.
Li Yifei sniffed, extending his hand, "Let’s not talk about sad things. Come, eat with Uncle."
The little girl hesitated but reached out, holding Li Yifei’s warm hand with her cold little one, saying, "Uncle, your hand is really warm."
"After eating, you’ll be warm too." Li Yifei said, transferring True Qi into the little girl’s body, warming her with several cycles, then leading her to eat, making a decision.
