Super Soldier in the City-Chapter 2136 - 2199: Airport Crisis
This was a long flight, spanning over half the globe without a stop. Li Yifei did fall asleep, unbeknownst to him, his head ending up on Wu Shuwei’s shoulder. They stayed in that position for a long while until Wu Shuwei noticed and glanced at Li Yifei’s half-open mouth to ensure he wasn’t drooling. Only then did she purse her lips and continue reading.
Fourteen hours in economy class is indeed uncomfortable. The seats weren’t spacious, so someone with Li Yifei’s physique naturally felt cramped, whereas Wu Shuwei, being smaller, had some space taken by him.
Flying from day into night, Wu Shuwei eventually grew sleepy too, not realizing when she ended up leaning on Li Yifei’s shoulder in her sleep. By deep night, she was resting directly on Li Yifei’s lap, his hand wrapped around her shoulder.
Luckily, everyone else in their team was just as exhausted, and everyone was asleep, so no one noticed.
After fourteen hours and with some shaking, the plane slowly landed at Egypt International Airport. This airport is the second busiest in Africa, a hub for many flights to other African countries. Direct flights from home to other African countries were rare.
After freshening up, Wu Shuwei needed to transfer directly at the airport to catch a flight to the Congo, and from there proceed to their destination.
Li Yifei also got up to use the restroom. They both experienced some awkwardness upon waking up. In the morning, Li Yifei naturally had a male reaction, with Wu Shuwei resting on his lap, not only feeling it but with her mouth alarmingly close.
Li Yifei had no choice but to pretend to be asleep, upon which Wu Shuwei eased her embarrassment a bit.
After disembarking, the group needed to transfer to Lubumbashi International Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a major airport in the southeast city of the country.
However, as soon as they got off the plane and were about to collect their tickets for the transfer, chaos erupted in the airport terminal. Loud explosions followed immediately, driving Li Yifei to rush to the women’s bathroom entrance, where he dragged out Wu Shuwei, who had just washed her face and tidied up.
"What happened?" Wu Shuwei also heard the explosions, but being in the restroom, it sounded much quieter, like something had fallen. Following Li Yifei outside, she saw the chaos and quickly asked.
Li Yifei shook his head, saying, "Not sure, explosions happened outside. Let’s return to the terminal lounge, it’s relatively safer there. Tell your people not to move, we don’t know what’s happening."
The atmosphere was already a bit chaotic; many bewildered people were shouting without knowing what was going on.
Protecting Wu Shuwei, Li Yifei quickly returned to the waiting hall, gathered their teams, and instructed them not to move and stay put.
In recent years, Egypt had indeed been tumultuous with several coups. Conflicts between different factions raged on, with ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire. Who would have expected an attack on the airport? Through glass, Li Yifei saw several police cars approaching, but no one seemed to manage the terminal, most people remaining still but anxious. Some police presence could have eased the chaos.
In the past year, however, Egypt has been much calmer, with agreements and cooperation between factions, determined Li Yifei, just newly descended, didn’t foresee the attack on the airport.
From the chaotic shouting, within minutes, Li Yifei discerned it was a political faction, over thirty people armed, attacking the airport to seize hostages and demand the release of one of their leaders. By then, over ten of these attackers had been killed, leaving over twenty, retreating into the airport as reinforcements of police and troops arrived outside. The airport’s gate had been blown up, and passengers held hostage. Li Yifei’s group hid in the restroom, as Li Yifei hid behind the restroom door, hearing two armed men approach carrying submachine guns, grenades lining their bodies. Through the gap, Li Yifei could see these men, preparing to herd all passengers together to use as leverage and clear out the airport.
Li Yifei wouldn’t let them succeed, at least not with taking Wu Shuwei and others as hostages, he wouldn’t have come for nothing.
The group hid inside, all somewhat panicked, being regular people. Besides Wu Shuwei, none had likely experienced such a situation. Wu Shuwei, having been through many encounters, wasn’t scared despite the danger. Her expression was still a bit off, reminding her of what she said before boarding the plane upon seeing Li Yifei.
It seemed meeting Li Yifei always spelled trouble - either getting kidnapped personally, or everyone together.
Li Yifei felt indignant too, considering he could argue the same; meeting her meant risking life and limb for a rescue. Then again, Wu Shuwei spent the past year in perilous countries and areas. If she stayed in a relatively peaceful and stable country, such events might be much less frequent.
The group huddled in the restroom, while Li Yifei alone stayed near the entrance. As the two men entered to search, Li Yifei struck at once, knocking them both out. Checking, he found explosives on them, destroyed the detonator, confiscated their weapons, grabbed a few magazines, and took a handgun and a submachine gun, leaving the rest with Wu Shuwei’s group.
Upon inquiry, not one knew how to use weapons besides Wu Shuwei, so the other machine gun was handed to her.
For those untrained, even a small-caliber handgun was dangerous without restraint, let alone a large-caliber one. Giving it to them was useless.
Tying up the two, not killing them, Li Yifei dragged them to the restroom, had them bound. Being the Egypt airport, today’s incident likely meant a lockdown for days, who knew when flights would resume.
Truly an unexpected disaster. Li Yifei tidied the weapons, considering helping Egyptian police by taking out a few more attackers, when a sudden burst of gunfire erupted. Peeking, he saw a team of police entering carrying shields and advanced firearms, repelled by even fiercer gunfire. Seeing a crowd, Li Yifei watched as a grenade was tossed into the police group. Seconds later, boom, several were blown sky-high, killing them outright, likely leaving the survivors injured.
"Crazy!" Li Yifei muttered at the reckless entry without clear intelligence. Could they not try another approach from behind or above? How many terrorists were there? Their actions only emboldened the terrorists further. Apart from some escaping hostages, over a hundred remained held. Collecting hostages increased their safety.
Watching, suddenly two women fled screaming toward Li Yifei, an attacker in pursuit. Li Yifei could evade, avoid exposing himself. But seeing the women looked like Easterners, like fellow countrymen, he didn’t hide, more so since the man raised a gun, shouting, "Stop, or I’ll shoot."
Panicked, the women didn’t stop, prompting the attacker to aim his gun. Just then, a black shadow struck the attacker, his gun dropping and a cry escaping him. Before he could react further, Li Yifei charged, striking the man’s neck with his gun butt, knocking him out.
The fleeing women saw Li Yifei while running to the bushes, ready to warn him when he struck. Stopping and turning back, they saw the attacker down.
"Are you from Huaxia?" Li Yifei asked in Mandarin.
One woman’s eyes lit up, nodding repeatedly, "Yes, yes! I’m from Huaxia! She’s my friend, from Korea."
"Go to that restroom, our fellow countrymen are hiding there. Be careful, don’t attract attention." Li Yifei pointed to the restroom hiding Wu Shuwei’s group. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
The woman nodded, asking, "Aren’t you coming with us?"
"I’m checking the situation. Take this gun, but stay silent!" Li Yifei replied.
The woman receiving the gun finally saw Li Yifei’s face clearly. Her eyes widened, her mouth opening in a scream louder than before when pursued, nearly causing Li Yifei to drop his gun. He covered her mouth, glaring, "Don’t shout!"
"Mmm!" She nodded, eyes full of surprise. When Li Yifei released her, she excitedly said, "You’re Li Yifei, right? You’re the comrade veteran!"
Damn, Li Yifei realized why she screamed. He even considered rolling his eyes, realizing he was so famous now that even random women in Egypt recognized him. Nodding, he said, "Yes, I am. But now’s not the time. Hide with your friend, getting caught would be dangerous!"
