Chapter 1340: Chapter 8: A Day in the Life of a Lone Hunter (Part 2)

The tavern was not far from Hunter Alice’s one-bedroom apartment at the time, so they decided to make the latter their last stop of the day.

Hunter Alice’s residence was in the middle of a shaded alley, a seven-story old apartment building. The communal bike shed was at the other end of the street, a two-minute walk away. This building was noticeably a notch above Alandia’s old home in the eastern district. Upon entering the lobby, an elderly security guard required the two to register, and the building was equipped with a vintage elevator from the 1980s.

The elevator doors were two-piece iron doors that slid open horizontally. As they opened halfway, there was a creaking sound, and only after Shiyu Ling knocked twice did they open smoothly. As Gongsun Ce stepped into the elevator, he felt like he was walking into the belly of an old, sluggish monster. It took quite a bit of effort to properly deliver the two passengers to the fifth floor.

"I bet you usually use Shadow Orchid."

"Exactly right. I’ve only taken this elevator three times before deciding never to use it again. Many people just take the stairs directly."

Shiyu Ling arrived at the gray iron door of Unit 504 and produced a key from somewhere. She slightly bent down and turned the lock, and when she pushed open the iron door with her hands held high, she seemed to transform back into the careless single female Hunter: "I’m home!"

Smoke and mold smells spilled out from behind the door, offering them an extremely enthusiastic welcome. Gongsun Ce vigorously fanned the air, while Shiyu Ling coughed repeatedly, and it took them some time to muster the courage to step into the house, which hadn’t been lived in for over half a year. The one-bedroom apartment was filled with grayish colors, dust fairies floated with the wind in every inch of the space, an ominous aura emanated from the fridge in the kitchen, and surprisingly, the bedroom light was still on.

Shiyu Ling’s expression gradually became extraordinarily brilliant: "I forgot to turn off the light... Oh my, I bought cheese and beef before I left!"

"Shut up, don’t say it aloud, okay! I don’t want to imagine the horrors inside the fridge right now!" Gongsun Ce was suddenly shocked, "Damn, did you see that there’s juice flowing from the gap in the fridge door? Mysterious black and green liquid is dripping down!"

Shiyu Ling retreated indifferently: "I remembered I still have some milk and tofu in the fridge..."

"Why are you backing away? I’m asking you, why are you backing away? Come back here!"

Shiyu Ling had already retreated to the outside, grabbing Gongsun Ce’s shoulder with one hand, her smile radiant like sunshine.

"It’s a rare visit home, I’m going downstairs to buy some beer and snacks, the cleaning job is left to you!"

Gongsun Ce was suddenly shocked: "How can you be so shameless to leave the mess for me to clean up? Come back here, you useless woman!!"

"Too late, silly brat! Once you enter a grown woman’s home, you must have this sense of awareness!"

As she spoke, the hostess Miss Shiyu had already disappeared, leaving Gongsun Ce to sigh deeply. As it turns out, when you’re with a useless woman, you have to take care of everything for her, otherwise, without any enemies, she’ll end up killing herself quietly.

Luckily for him, he had telekinesis, and with the windows open, a gust of wind would clear the dust from the room in a matter of seconds. When dealing with the fridge’s leftover items, he creatively used the technique to ignite Tribulation Flame remotely, burning suspicious substances along with their odors to ashes without opening the door.

After resolving the major issues, the rest was simple. Gongsun Ce simply created two rags, using telekinesis to drag them around while he walked and cleaned. The bathroom was right opposite the kitchen, a small room full of traces of someone’s life. The showerhead was a silly-looking dog head design, clearly a piece of furniture purchased by someone alone; on the individually set up clothesline were clothes left half a year ago, including her favorite black lace underwear and a worn white vest; on the glass before the sink were several hand-written sticky notes with self-encouragement messages like "Work hard and rise to the top," "Three deals a week will lead to success."

Gongsun Ce chuckled a few times and helped her wash and hang up the clothes again. While tidying up the living room, he saw Shiyu Ling’s small bookshelf, where books were distinctly spaced on either side. On the far left were several thick professional books about the customs and manners of the Country, followed by some Knight Order internal manuals, some common Heart Phase Weapon introductory material, and a roughly marked map of the capital city.

He opened the Heart Phase Weapon booklet, and on each page, he saw Alice’s doodles, mainly focused on price materials and appearance designs. There was a hesitant little circle in the "Short Arrow" section, suggesting she had thought long and hard before making a decision. Gongsun Ce skimmed through other books, finding her notes on each one. Clearly, they were all well-read many times, reflecting her seriousness. To pretend to be a Hunter meant she had to do it well, even to the extent that she believed it herself.

The style of the books on the right side was completely different, full of travel guides, popular novels, and some expensive-looking photo albums and picture books. Almost all these books were brand new, some even unopened. She must have been enthusiastic about buying intriguing books to take home at the time, placing them earnestly on the other side of the shelf as a symbol of "dreams," loudly encouraging herself that once Alice earned enough money, she could live freely!

After saying that, she would re-pick the books on the left and study them carefully, watching TV or falling asleep when tired. The "dreams" she had worked hard to buy were right beside her but rarely touched, only glancing at them when exceedingly tired, motivating herself to persist with the hard work tomorrow.
