Chapter 158: Chapter

Lin Xu turned around and left Mo Ying’s study, straight to her quarters where the kids and Yan Mei were already packed and ready to leave. She wasn’t interested in any of this anymore. She was tired, she had forgotten why on earth she stayed single all those years.

She loved Mo Ying, yes, but them being together was going to cost her time, energy, and so much drama. She wasn’t cut out for any of it. She just wanted a peaceful life with her children, and Mo Ying ended up tagging along. If he knows he can’t give her that peaceful life, then he should forget about it. She wasn’t some tool he could put in his possession. She had her own mind, her own rights, and her own life to live.

Lin Xu turned away from the study and walked back toward her quarters, her steps steady and firm. She didn’t rush. She didn’t look back. Every breath she took felt heavy, as if the entire mansion pressed down on her shoulders... but she did not bend.

By the time she reached her courtyard, Yan Mei and the children were already outside with their bags packed.

Yan Mei ran to her first.

"Lin Xu, are you alright? You didn’t even stay long. What happened?"

Lin Xu gave a small, tired smile. "Nothing worth staying for."

That was all she said, but Yan Mei understood immediately. She placed a steadying hand on Lin Xu’s arm and nodded.

The children gathered around her as soon as they saw her.

Yiling tugged at her sleeve, eyes glossy and confused.

"Mother... are we really leaving Papa?"

Lin Xu knelt down and cupped her cheek gently. "We are leaving this house, Yiling. But your father can still visit you. You can visit him too someday. But this place... this is not our home."

Yiling bit her lip but nodded slowly.

Mo Yuen stepped forward, his little jaw tight with anger he tried to hide.

"I support your decision, Mother. One hundred percent."

Mo Bao quickly nodded beside him, arms crossed like a tiny soldier.

"I agree. I don’t like it here anymore. People here don’t treat Mama well."

Their trust nearly broke her heart.

Lin Xu exhaled, steadying herself. "Good. Then we go together."

Yan Mei smiled faintly. "We’re ready when you are."

Lin Xu nodded and turned toward the gate of their quarters...

But just as the five of them stepped forward, several guards blocked their path.

Heavy footsteps approached behind them.

Mo Ying.

His voice came, deep and strained.

"Lin Xu... where do you think you’re going?"

She didn’t turn around quickly. She finished adjusting Mo Bao’s coat first, then slowly faced him.

"Leaving."

Mo Ying’s eyes darted to the packed bags, then to the children, then back to her. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"You’re taking them?"

"Yes."

"You’re not," he said sharply.

The guards stepped closer to block the exit. Yan Mei moved protectively in front of the kids, her expression darkening.

Lin Xu didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t flinch.

"Move your guards, Mo Ying."

"No," he said. "We are not done talking."

"We already talked," Lin Xu replied. "You made your choice when you tried to keep me here with threats."

Mo Ying stepped closer, frustration burning through him.

"I made that choice because you always run the moment something hurts."

Lin Xu’s eyes sharpened.

"And you always grab the nearest weapon the moment something scares you."

The guards stiffened.

Mo Ying’s jaw clenched. "Lin Xu..."

"No," she cut him off. "You do not get to block my path. Not after all that’s been said."

Mo Bao stepped forward, small but fierce.

"Papa, don’t do this. You’re making Mama sad."

Mo Ying froze.

Yiling grabbed her mother’s hand.

"Papa, we want to go with her. Please... don’t stop us."

Mo Yuen stood tall, eyes burning just like Mo Ying’s.

"You promised us that family means safety. But she is the one who keeps us safe. Not this house."

Mo Ying’s breath shook.

The children’s words hit him harder than any argument.

But still... he whispered, "Lin Xu... don’t take them away from me."

She looked at him quietly... calm, tired, unwavering.

"I’m not taking them away from you," she said. "I’m taking them away from this."

Her eyes swept over the guards, the walls, the cold air around them.

"This life. This chaos. This pain."

Mo Ying’s voice cracked. "I can fix it."

"When?" she asked simply. "Today? Tomorrow? After another insult? After another fight?"

Mo Ying opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Yan Mei stepped forward. "General Mo, please. Let her go. For tonight, let her breathe."

Silence fell.

Lin Xu didn’t push further. She simply reached out and took her children’s hands.

"Step aside," she said to the guards, voice steady and firm. "We are leaving."

The guards looked at Mo Ying.

And Mo Ying... slowly lowered his gaze.

The tiniest nod.

The guards moved.

Lin Xu walked past Mo Ying without pausing, the children and Yan Mei beside her. Their small footsteps echoed behind her, following her lead... trusting her completely.

She did not look back.

And Mo Ying, left standing alone in the courtyard, felt the weight of his own choices crash over him like a storm.

Lin Xu stopped in her footsteps.

She didn’t turn around.

She didn’t look at Mo Ying.

But her words cut straight through him.

"I didn’t fall in love with General Mo," she said quietly.

"I didn’t fall for a man full of anger... and control. I fell in love with Mo Ying, not Mo Shen. And my children... they love Papa Mo. Not the general you keep turning into."

Silence dropped over the courtyard.

Even the guards lowered their eyes.

Lin Xu didn’t wait for his reaction.

She walked off again, Yan Mei following right behind her, the children close at her side.

They reached the courtyard gate just as Fuhan arrived with several more guards. One look at the scene and he understood everything. His shoulders dropped slightly, and he let out a long breath.

"Fuhan, escort them back," Mo Ying ordered, voice tight.

Fuhan nodded and began to move...

But Lin Xu raised her hand sharply.

"No."

Fuhan froze.

Lin Xu’s eyes didn’t waver.

"If you think you can watch me again... keep an eye on me like some prisoner... then forget it. I don’t want any of it. Just stay away from me."

Her voice cracked only slightly at the end.

"Please... I am begging you."

Mo Ying’s face went pale.

Yan Mei took Lin Xu’s hand gently. "Come. The carriage is ready."

Lin Xu didn’t look back at anyone. She walked toward another carriage she had requested earlier... one far from the Mo residence’s control.

The children climbed in beside her, and Yan Mei followed.

As they began to leave the courtyard... the entire Mo residence watched.

From the corridor above, Grandma Mo scoffed loudly.

"Hmph! Let her go! A woman who dares talk back like that will bring nothing but shame! She was troublesome!"

Her voice echoed across the courtyard, sharp and cold.

Madame Mo stood beside her, arms crossed tightly.

"She should be grateful she was even allowed into this household."

She sniffed. "Running away with the children like some wild woman... it’s disgraceful."

Mo Lan leaned against the balcony railing, smirking.

"I said it from the beginning... she thinks too highly of herself. No manners, no respect, always acting like a queen. She finally got what she deserved, ha! Good for her. Now I’m sure that annoying San Na can have peace of mind."

Mo An beside her chuckled.

"Well, now we know she was only waiting for the right moment to escape."

Uncle Mo stood on the steps.

"Sigh, what a disgrace toward the Mo family. How are we going to face our ancestors now?"

San Na was seated in her room when the news reached her ears that Lin Xu was leaving. She quickly stood up and stepped outside where she could see her clearly. Her maid was laughing and giving thanks to the gods beside her, but San Na’s face didn’t seem amused one bit.

"My lady, our prayer is finally answered. That wicked concubine has finally left. No one dares go against you again. Getting rid of Lady Chu wouldn’t be much of a problem hehe."

But San Na just kept quiet, her expression still fixed on Lin Xu.

"Why is she so lucky... she can come into the household whenever she likes and can leave whenever she likes, while some of us are just stuck here like prisoners."

The whispers and comments followed Lin Xu as she walked through the courtyard, but she did not let a single one pierce her.

She climbed into the carriage with her children and Yan Mei, lifted her chin, and said one clear word to the driver:

"Go."

The horses began to move.

The wheels rolled forward.

Mo Ying stood frozen in the courtyard, watching the carriage grow smaller and smaller, hearing the voices of his household behind him...

But none of it mattered,

because the only thing he truly heard

was the fading sound of Lin Xu leaving him behind.
