Finally, they started on the roof. The base of the A-frame structure was a sturdy framework of logs. They then covered it with layers of large leaves, dry grass, and mud mixed with straw. The very top layer was a thick, woven straw thatch, secured in place with more logs.

Once the house was built, a cheerful Wu Yue gave her friends a tour of her new "little nest." Though she called it that, it was much larger and taller than Qinghua’s thatched hut—spacious and beautiful.

The stairwell leading down into the house was wide, keeping the interior from feeling dark. The moment Qinghua and Qingcao stepped inside, they fell in love with it.

Qingcao’s eyes sparkled. "Yue, your house is so much bigger than our caves!"

She did a little lap around the room. "I want to build a house like this too! Yue, you have to help me."

She grabbed Wu Yue’s arm and shook it excitedly as she spoke.

Getting a headache from the shaking, Wu Yue quickly nodded. "Okay, okay, I’ll help! I’ll help both you and Qinghua."

At that, Qinghua’s two mates put aside their disdain. Any dissatisfaction they’d felt vanished completely. Hearing that this young female was going to help them build such a beautiful home, their eyes filled with gratitude.
