Chapter 123: A Mess 123

Despite everything, a part of Adeline still wanted to see that annoying face of his again.

Her fingers loosened and she let the jacket slip from her hands, pooling on the floor beneath her. "If I were to see him again, how am I supposed to face him? What the hell am I even going to say?"

At Enzo’s estate, inside his office, he sat slumped at his desk, his face buried in his arms, which rested against the wood.

He had been like this for three days. The only time he left was to drag himself to his bedroom, shower lazily, and change before coming right back. He hadn’t even spoken much to anyone other than giving Andrei orders or sending him over to his company.

All he could think about was Adeline, and every time he closed his eyes, he saw the look on her face when she walked in on him.

At the far corner of the room, near the door, Andrei stood in silence with his hands behind his back, his usual blank expression tinged with concern. The sight of Enzo hunched over his desk, unmoving for hours, was troubling.

It had been days since everything had happened, and while Enzo had eventually told him what went down that night, there was little he could do to help. He was starting to fear that if something didn’t change soon, Enzo might lose himself completely. And without a doubt, Damien would definitely blame him if that happened.

Since they became adults, Enzo had always carried himself with an air of confidence, and never once had he seen him broken, but now he barely even looked like himself.

Clearing his throat, Andrei finally broke the heavy silence. "My Liege?"

Enzo slowly lifted his head, his gaze meeting Andrei’s. "What?"

Andrei hesitated, choosing his next words very carefully. "Perhaps you should... meet up with her and talk all this through." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Enzo let out a humorless chuckle as he pushed himself up from the table, leaning back against his chair. He shut his eyes and pressed his fingers against his temples as if trying to massage away the weight of his thoughts. "I doubt she’d listen. She probably thinks I’m some fucking crazy psychopath now. I don’t want to traumatize her more than I already did."

"Maybe she was a bit shaken, but I highly doubt she thinks of you as a psychopath." He watched Enzo closely, hoping his words would register. "You should at least talk to her first and see how it goes. If it doesn’t go well... then at least you’ll know you tried. You can’t just—"

A buzz from Enzo’s phone on the desk echoed, interrupting him, but Enzo didn’t react at all or bother to even glance at it.

Sighing, Andrei stepped closer and picked up the device, flipping it over to check the caller. The moment he saw the name on the screen, a barely noticeable smile crept onto his face, and he turned the screen toward Enzo. "My liege, it’s her."

Enzo’s eyes snapped open, all traces of exhaustion vanishing in an instant. In the blink of an eye, he shot up from his chair so fast that it flew backward, crashing into the wall behind him with a loud thud.

Snatching the phone from Andrei’s hand, he cleared his throat, trying to sound composed before answering. "Adeline."

Her soft voice came through. "Can we meet tonight at your place? We need to talk."

For a brief moment, Enzo found himself unable to draw a breath. Only three days had passed since he had last heard her captivating voice, yet it felt like an eternity.

Snapping out of his daze, he nodded frantically, even though she couldn’t see it. "Of course. Of course. Just let me know whenever you’re ready."

There was a small pause on the other end before she responded. "Alright then."

And just like that, the call ended.

Andrei, who had been watching, gave a small shrug. "See?"

Sighing deeply, Enzo tossed the phone onto the desk and ran a hand through his loose hair. If his heart worked like a human’s, he was sure it would have been hammering against his ribs right now.

"But I don’t know what she wants to talk about. What if she just wants to tell me she never wants to see my face again?"

Andrei placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, giving him a gentle pat. "If she wanted to say that, she would’ve done it over the phone. Do you think she’d come all the way here just to tell you she doesn’t want to see you again?"

"She’s giving you a chance to properly explain everything. She just wants to understand. Everything will turn out fine, my liege. I can tell."

Just outside the office window, Vincent stood concealed behind one of the mansion’s pillars with a pair of binoculars pressed to his face. He peered through them, his eyes locked onto Enzo and Andrei inside the office.

His ears twitched ever so slightly, picking up every word exchanged between them. He was far enough to remain undetected, but with his enhanced vampire hearing, the distance was hardly an issue.

He had been keeping tabs on both Enzo and Adeline ever since that night Beverly’s birthday celebration took place. At the time, he had simply come to check on them as usual, according to Damien’s orders. (Even though he still won’t tell him what he was actually seeing.)

It was nothing more than his usual routine, but just as he was about to leave, he caught sight of Enzo exiting the estate with an unusual look on his face. Something about his demeanor struck Vincent as odd, and at that moment, a seed of curiosity was planted in his mind.

He decided to return the next day, but when he arrived, Enzo’s car was still missing from the driveway. From what gathered all this while he’d been spying on Enzo, he knows that Enzo only leaves Adeline in the morning—occasionally—to visit his company, but never at night.

Him not returning the next morning was enough to tell him something had happened. If Enzo wasn’t back, then maybe he could at least get a sense of what was going on from Adeline.

However, as he flew to her window, he paused mid-flight, his ears picking up the sound of Adeline speaking to herself.

"Okay, Adeline. This all sounds crazy, but you’ve come to a conclusion. Your fiancé is a vampire."

And just like that, Vincent knew exactly what had happened.
