Chapter 25: Caught 25

Adeline’s vision began to blur, the only thing she could hear being the sound of crunching metal and shattering glass. The car finally came to a halt, slamming sideways into a massive tree. The roof crumpled against the trunk, leaving the vehicle lying on its side with smoke hissing from the engine. The car was a complete mess, but somehow the classical music continued to play.

Inside the car, Enzo’s eyes fluttered open. A sharp pain shot through his head, and he reached up, feeling the warm, sticky trail of blood running down his face. He groaned, blinking rapidly until his surroundings came into focus.

He glanced down and saw Adeline cradled against him, her body curled into his. Her eyes shut tight as soft grunts of pain escaped her lips. Luckily, his body had successfully shielded her during the fall.

He carefully shifted her aside, making sure she was as comfortable as possible. With a growl, he punched the driver’s door, which was now above them. The door completely flew off its hinges and he climbed out quickly, despite the ache in his body. Once outside, he leaned back into the car, his hands reaching for Adeline.

"Come on," he whispered, wrapping his arms around her and lifting her. As he pulled her out, the sudden shift in weight caused him to stumble back. He fell onto his back with a pained grunt while Adeline landed on his chest.

He sat up immediately and cradled her against him, his hand gently patting her cheek. "Adeline.... Open your eyes."

Adeline’s eyes slowly opened, tears streaming down her face. "Enzo," she whimpered, burying her face in his chest. "It hurts... it hurts so much. I don’t want to die."

He tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and cupped her face. "Don’t be silly. You’re not going to die. I promised you, didn’t I? Nothing’s going to happen to you while I’m here."

"Everywhere hurts," she cried, frantically turning her head in panic. "My whole body... it hurts so bad."

"Shh," Enzo murmured, holding her closer, "I’ve got you. You’re going to be okay."

Suddenly, his senses picked up the sound of footsteps approaching through the smoke. His fangs elongated as he shifted Adeline in his arms, ready to strike if the person approaching was a threat.

The figure emerged from the smoke, waving a hand to clear the air around him. "Master?"

Enzo’s fangs retracted as he recognized the voice. "Andrei..."

Andre rushed forward, his eyes darting between Enzo and Adeline. "What happened, master?" he asked, reaching out to take Adeline from Enzo’s arms. "Are you alright?"

"I’m fine..." Enzo assured him, wincing in pain as he pressed a hand to his aching forehead. "We have to get her to a hospital quickly."

Andrei nodded immediately and began walking, expecting Enzo to follow him, but he didn’t. Enzo stood back, staring at the damaged car.

"My car’s just up ahead, master. On the other side of the road."

Enzo blinked, snapping out of his thoughts and nodding. "Let’s go."

By the time they arrived at the hospital, Adeline was barely conscious. Her body was now limp in Enzo’s arms, her breathing shallow. The car screeched to a halt at the entrance, and before it fully stopped, Enzo swung the back door open with force that nearly tore it off completely. He stepped out, reaching back into the car and scooping Adeline into his arms.

The moment she was in his grasp, her head lolled against his chest and a soft whimper escaped her lips.

"Hold on," he whispered. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

His suit was stained with blood—some his, some her. The only thing in his mind at the moment was Adeline surviving. The automatic glass doors slid open, allowing Enzo to enter, and the moment he did, the scent of antiseptic hit him, causing him to scrunch his nose in disgust.

Andrei stayed behind by the car, his hazel eyes darting around as it scanned the area.

Not far from the hospital’s entrance, hidden behind a large stone pillar, stood Vincent. He raised his camera, the click of the shutter capturing images of Enzo carrying Adeline inside. His hands trembled as he adjusted the focus, zooming in to catch every detail.

Sweat beaded on his forehead, despite the cool air. After several clicks, he lowered the camera to review the shots, nodding to himself at the quality of the photos.

But as he admired his work, a shadow loomed over him, and before he could react, a hand shot out, snatching the camera from his grasp. Vincent flinched, a short gasp escaping his mouth as fear surged through him. He spun around, stumbling slightly when he saw Andrei standing a few steps away from him.

Andrei held the camera, his expression calm as he scanned through the photos on the camera. There were more pictures taken on different days of Enzo, Adeline, and even Andrei himself. When it seemed like he was done, he shook his head, letting out a soft chuckle. "You’re quite bold, Vincent. Spying on master like this... not a smart move."

He tossed the camera back to Vincent, who barely managed to catch it with shaky hands.

Vincent stumbled back, clutching the camera to his chest as though it could shield him. His lips quivered as tears welled up in his eyes and he shook his head frantically. "P-please," he begged. "I... I didn’t have a choice. It’s not my fault. Master Enzo’s father sent me, and you know I can’t refuse his orders."

"Even after all these years, you’re still a crybaby, Vincent." He said with a teasing smirk as he stepped closer. He reached out, brushing aside the messy strands of hair that had fallen over his face before straightening the man’s rumpled shirt. "Do you have any idea what Master Enzo would do to you if he found out you were spying on him?"

Vincent’s pupils dilated in fear as more tears streamed down his face. "Please, Andrei."

Andrei turned his back on him, ignoring his cries. "Perhaps Master would behead you and send your head back to his father. It does sound like something he’d do."
