Chapter 30: What Are You, A Dog? 30

Just then, Evelyn felt a cold hand wrap around her arm. The sensation sent a shiver down her spine, and she spun around to face the out-of-breath nurse, who had finally caught up to her. The nurse placed one hand on her hip, holding her with the other while breathing heavily.

"Miss, you can’t be here. We’ll have to—"

Before the nurse could finish, Evelyn’s panic overtook her entirely. "No!" she shrieked, yanking her arm free. She quickly turned and darted past Andrei.

He instinctively reached out to grab her, but her arm slipped through his fingers like water.

The nurse wobbled backward, bracing herself against the wall while she tried to steady her gasping breaths. "I can’t run anymore. I don’t get paid enough for this."

Andrei let out a scoff, sliding his phone into his pocket. "Really?" Shaking his head, he turned to follow Evelyn.

Evelyn, meanwhile, darted from one door to another, yanking on handles. The first door didn’t budge, nor did the second. She gritted her teeth in frustration, glancing over her shoulder to see if anyone was catching up to her.

Finally, she came across a door that opened, and she quickly peeked inside, sticking just her head through the opening. "Adeline?" she called breathlessly, scanning the room. "Are you here?"

All she received in return were confused stares from the patients inside. An older man sitting in a wheelchair near the window turned to her with raised eyebrows while the nurse adjusting an IV stand frowned at her.

"Wrong room!" Evelyn exclaimed apologetically, quickly shutting the door.

As she moved to the next door, she heard Andrei’s calm voice behind her. "What you’re doing is pointless," he said, his tone mildly scolding but mostly disinterested. "You won’t find her like this."

Evelyn ignored him, yanking open another door only to find a room filled with medical supplies. She groaned in frustration, slamming the door shut.

Andrei continued walking toward her. "If you would just listen, I could take you to her. But this...?" He gestured lazily to her frantic actions. "This is just wasting time."

Evelyn ignored Andrei and continued moving through the hallway, determined to search every door until she found Adeline. She darted past the last row, then stopped at an intersection, her eyes darting left and right as she tried to figure out which way to go. Taking a wild guess, she turned left and bolted down the corridor, leaving Andrei trailing far behind.

Andrei didn’t bother quickening his pace to follow her. Instead, he sighed, murmuring, "Well, I can certainly see why she’s Miss Adeline’s friend. They both have the same stubbornness."

Evelyn ran past the first door in the new hallway before she suddenly halted, sniffing the air. A familiar scent teased her nose. Her brow furrowed as she sniffed again before turning her head toward another part of the hallway. "That’s Adeline’s perfume... I’d recognize it anywhere!"

Andrei, who had just turned the corner, arched his brow. "What are you, a dog now? Miss Adeline isn’t the only one in the world who uses that perfume."

Evelyn ignored him once again, clutching her purse tightly as she zoomed past him.

In Adeline’s hospital room, she groaned dramatically on the bed, her face wrinkled in irritation. "I want to go home. I hate it here. The smell of antiseptic and pills is literally making me want to throw up. Enzo, get me out of here."

Enzo, sitting in the chair beside her, reached out to pat her head. "Be patient."

Adeline slowly shifted her head to look at him, frowning. "I told you, if you keep patting my head like that, you’re going to lose the arm."

Enzo, unfazed by her threat, stood from his chair. He stretched his arms over his head, exhaling before walking to the door. "I’ll go talk to the doctor and see about getting you discharged."

Adeline, now staring blankly at the ceiling, raised his hand, giving him a lazy thumbs-up.

He reached for the door handle, but just as his fingers brushed it, he paused. A muffled commotion could be heard coming from the hallway. He inclined his head, his interest piqued as he listened in.

Adeline’s head turned in the same direction, her gaze fixed on the door.

An unfamiliar voice rang out. "Hey, slow down! You’re going to hurt yourself!"

It was immediately followed by Andrei’s low voice. "Come on, Miss. You really have to stop this."

The sound of hurried footsteps echoed down the hall, growing louder and louder, heading straight toward their room. Enzo raised a brow, glancing back at Adeline, who looked equally confused. Wanting to see what was going on, he twisted the knob and opened the door.

Evelyn slammed into him with full force, the impact knocking her backward and sending her sprawling onto the floor. He looked down at her, recognizing her instantly. "Well, hello, you," he greeted, crouching down and stretching out a hand to help her up.

Evelyn rubbed her throbbing forehead as she blinked up at him. When her vision focused and she realized who she had just crashed into, she gasped. "I knew it!" She grabbed his hand, letting him pull her to her feet, before quickly pulling away.

Pushing past him, Evelyn shoved the partially open door wide and stepped inside the room. "Adeline! Where is she?" Her head whipped frantically from side to side, scanning the room for any sign of her best friend. She was so panicked that she didn’t see Adeline immediately, even though she was just a few steps away from her.

Adeline, now sitting up in the bed with a confused look plastered on her face, finally caught her attention.

Evelyn froze when their eyes met. Without another word, she rushed forward, throwing her arms around Adeline in a tight hug.

Adeline gasped at the sudden embrace, her arms hovering in the air for a second before she returned the hug, wrapping her best friend in a tight grip.

As Evelyn pulled away from the hug, she grabbed Adeline’s face with both hands, tilting it from side to side as though inspecting every inch of her. "Are you sure you’re okay? I was so worried I almost had a heart attack!"

Her words came out in a rush, her hands gesturing wildly as she spoke.

"One minute we were talking, and then I heard these screams and what sounded like a crash. I called and called, but you didn’t answer. Then an hour later, I see your car on TV looking like it was stomped on by a giant!" Her voice was frantic as she waved her hands around.
