Chapter 49: Let Go Before I Chop Your Hand Off! 49

He moved closer and crouched again, picking up one of the packets and squeezing it with a look of annoyance on his face. After a few seconds of staring at nothing, seemingly lost in thought, he straightened up and shook his head, muttering something under his breath.

Exiting his mother’s bedroom and stepping out into the hallway, the sound of approaching footsteps halted his movements. He turned to see the head chef walking toward him, balancing a tray of food with several other cooks trailing behind her.

When the head chef reached him, she stopped and offered a polite nod. "Good morning, Mr. Evans."

The other cooks greeted him in unison, and Evans returned a curt nod in acknowledgment.

The head chef was about to walk past him when she noticed the packet he was absentmindedly fidgeting with in his hand. She recognized it immediately—it looked just like the one Adeline had shown her earlier.

Evans noticed her hesitation and held the packet up. "Do you know what this is?" he asked, cocking an eyebrow.

The head chef nodded, shifting the tray in her hands to balance it. "Kind of, sir. Miss Adeline brought it to the kitchen earlier, asking if we’d seen it before."

Evans’s breathe shuddered as he stepped back. His gaze fell to the dloor and his pupils darted around in panic before suddenly snapping back up to the chef. "Where is she now?" he asked in a hurried tone.

"She left with her fiancée to look for Miranda, the pastry chef who used to work here."

Without another word, Evans turned and rushed off, leaving the chef standing there, a bit puzzled. After a moment, she adjusted her grip on the tray and continued toward the dining room.

Enzo pulled his car into a small parking lot near the restaurant the landlord had mentioned. The soft hum of the engine died as he parked and Adeline pushed open her door and stepped out. She leaned against the passenger side door, her arms crossed as she waited for him.

Enzo exited the car, taking the opportunity to stretch his limbs before securely locking the vehicle.

She squinted up at the sun, feeling its warmth against her skin, and then glanced back at Enzo, who was taking his sweet time.

Finally, Enzo adjusted his tuxedo jacket and circled around to her side. He stopped in front of her, his taller frame casting a shadow over her, shielding her from the sun.

Enzo extended his hand toward her, a small, teasing smile tugging at his lips. "Shall we, fiancée?"

"What’s with the sudden gesture?" she asked, her brows scrunching in a slight frown as her eyes dropped to his open palm. "We’re just going to look for someone in a restaurant, not attending a ball."

Ignoring his gesture, she brushe past him, attempting to stride ahead, only to be abruptly pulled backward as Enzo seized her wrist, the force of his grip bringing her close to him.

Her eyes flared in surprise, her head whipping around to shoot him an icy glare. "Let go of me before I chop your hand off."

Enzo gasped dramatically, clutching his chest with his free hand as if he had just been shot. "You’re so mean to me. It’s like a dagger straight to my heart."

Adeline scowled. "Don’t be ridiculous," she muttered, glancing around. Her heart sank when she noticed several passersby watching them with amused smiles, some even whispering to one another. The attention made her skin crawl.

Embarrassed, she turned back to Enzo, lowering her voice to a harsh whisper. "I said let go, idiot. People are watching us!"

But Enzo’s grip on her wrist didn’t loosen.

His gaze fell to the floor for a second before he looked back at Adeline with a hurt look. "All I’m asking is for you to hold my hand. Is that too much?"

Adeline glanced back at the passersby who were still watching with amused faces and chuckled awkwardly, giving them a small wave before leaning closer to Enzo and whispering, "What the hell has gotten into you?"

"Just hold my hand as we walk to the restaurant. That’s it" Ezno said.

Sighing deeply, she relented, pulling her wrist free from his grip before placing her hand gently into his. "Fine. Let’s just go already."

Enzo’s face lit up. He pulled her closer and Adeline begrudgingly allowed him, her face partially hidden behind his arm as they walked past the onlookers.

She peeked out occasionally to check if they were still being watched, and once they were out of sight, she murmured, "Do you realize how cringe and embarrassing that was? Everyone was staring at us. They probably think we’re some crazy couple." 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

Enzo shrugged nonchalantly before releasing her hand. His arm snaked around hers, pulling her closer into his side. "I don’t care what other people think."

A frown of irritation played on her lips as she considered pushing him away but ultimately decided against it. She tilted her head up to meet his gaze and asked, "Why did you even do all that? It was so random."

Enzo chuckled and patted her arm lightly. "You looked bored. Maybe even a little annoyed. I wanted to cheer you up."

"By embarrassing me in front of all those people?" she asked, jabbing an elbow into his ribs.

"Ouch!" Enzo winced, his grip tightening around her. Adeline almost stumbled as he pulled her closer, earning him another glare. "Alright, alright," he said, laughing. "I’m sorry. I was just messing with you."

Adeline was caught off guard by his apology. She couldn’t deny that she had been bored, and while his antics had mortified her at first, now it didn’t seem so bad. In fact, it was kind of funny.

Scoffing, she muttered, "Don’t apologize, dummy."

Enzo cocked his head, leaning a bit lower, his gaze studying her face with a teasing gleam in his eyes. "I see a faint smile here. Does that mean I succeeded in cheering you up?"

Adeline rolled her eyes, pushing his face away with her hand. "Just a little bit."

As they reached the restaurant’s entrance, Adeline slipped out of his grasp and straightened her clothes. "Let’s go," she said, stepping inside without waiting for him.
