Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Suddenly

Fear in humans largely arises from fear of the unknown and uncertainty, differing from the genetically hardwired fear of snakes, spiders, and bloody gore, for genes fearless of such things seldom passed down through human history.

Leon was always worried about the intruders that kept popping up, mainly because he didn't know what schemes they might be harboring. Now that he heard the truth from the strong man, his hanging heart... couldn't settle down. The people targeting them are not simple at all.

If Edwin were still the Chief Mage under the Mother Dragon, still working and serving for the Mother Dragon, resolving this issue might have been quite difficult. Now, for some unknown reason, a dragon and a human suddenly erupted in conflict and parted ways, suggesting this may all be a misunderstanding.

All in all, Leon appeared quite excited, and after the Mother Dragon returned from throwing the strong man into the basement, he immediately asked, "What do you think, Mother?"

"What do I think?" said the Mother Dragon, "Are you talking about the ransom?"

Money-obsessed dragons truly are a headache. Leon opened his mouth and then closed it, hesitating to speak, and patiently explained: "No, I'm talking about what he said... Edwin isn't here with us now, and all we need to do is to inform the Imperial people about this, and we won't have any trouble."

"They will just believe us if we say so?" Mother Dragon retorted.

Leon realized, the chaotically evil Red Dragon has never been known for noble qualities; no one would easily believe the words of a Red Dragon.

Even so, Leon still didn't want to give up trying. He said, "They may not believe, but we can't just not explain, not make an effort... Proud Red Dragons do not lie. I imagine, Mother, as long as you clarify the situation, that you and Edwin had a conflict and now Edwin is your enemy, they will certainly believe you."

"What are you talking about? Proud Red Dragons do not lie?" Mother Dragon's eyes wandered; she contemplated her actions over the past hundred years. "I like to trick those fools, as long as they pay the ransom I will let them go... They offend me and think they can escape?"

Leon gave a bitter smile.

Indeed, though the Red Dragon may not be as perfect a deceitful master like the Green Dragon, or a master of vagueness in speeches, known for misdirection and cunning in gaining the upper hand, it is certainly infamous for being a cunning and rebellious True Dragon, but it is no good thing.

The chaotically evil Red Dragon primarily promotes doing whatever it desires, deceiving at a whim, what's said in the morning can be taken back in the afternoon.

"Mother also wouldn't want to be misunderstood by others," Leon said patiently.

"Doesn't matter to me," Mother Dragon yawned, "As long as they dare to intrude into my territory, I will kill them."

Leon thought for a moment and decided to try another angle to persuade the Mother Dragon, he laughed and said, "Mother, don't you very much want to tear Edwin into pieces? Actually, I think Mother could collaborate with them in a joint search for Edwin."

Mother Dragon replied sarcastically, "Edwin taught you the Universal Language... I heard you used to visit him every few days to chat, listen to him speak about the outside world, borrow books, you even called him 'Teacher'... That's how you treat him, that's how you scheme against him, truly worthy of being my child."

Leon was dumbfounded, he always thought he was of a pure nature, turns out he's naturally a bad seed? Maybe a good person without conflicting interests, but once it involves his interests, he's capable of anything?

"A temporary measure," Leon struggled to justify, thinking to himself that saying is one thing, doing is another.

"Those intruders supported by them almost killed you, and you aren't even slightly angry?" Mother Dragon suddenly asked, "You are so good-tempered, still wanting to cooperate with them?"

Leon tilted his head several times.

He nearly got killed, moreover, he heard that the Empire was powerful, even Red Dragons can't do as they please, not wanting to provoke conflicts, he really hadn't seriously considered that aspect.

"What if they ask me why I had a fallout with Edwin?" Mother Dragon lowered her head down to Leon's face.

"Then..." Leon's voice got stuck; he didn't know why the conflict between the dragon and the human erupted, but he knew Mother Dragon always considered it a disgraceful incident, and with her prideful nature, she would never disclose it.

Mother Dragon nuzzled her head forward gently, tipping Leon over, then drew back her head, holding it high, and said: "I will not collaborate with those Imperial people. I will personally find that deceitful scoundrel and kill him."

Leon hadn't gotten up yet.

"I won't explain to those Imperial people, unless they come visiting me with generous gifts, perhaps I will then mercifully tell them not to waste their efforts here," Mother Dragon arrogantly lifted her chin, "And about Grey Mountain Town? Perhaps I should take the initiative to visit them, because they keep arrogantly intruding into my territory, and I am very angry now."

At this point, Leon had given up trying to persuade the Mother Dragon.

"Finally—" the Mother Dragon eyed Leon, "I have something to announce."

"What, what is it?" Leon was certain whatever the Mother Dragon was about to announce was profoundly consequential to him.

"That is, I am banishing you." The Mother Dragon roared at Leon, the roar's wind almost knocked him over, "I demand you to leave my territory immediately, or don't blame me for being ruthless."

Unexpectedly, this decision was too sudden, Leon wondered if he had heard wrong.

"Why banish me?" Leon really couldn't fathom why the Mother Dragon would suddenly banish him; even if she disregarded his opinions, it shouldn't have escalated to banishment. It wasn't just about being driven out of the Dragon Nest atop the mountain, but being completely banished from the hundreds of kilometers of the Mother Dragon's territory.

"You don't need to know why." The Mother Dragon said, "You just need to know that this is my decision."

Salovis, who had been quiet all along, stepped forward.

"You don't speak, don't persuade me." The Mother Dragon glared at Dragon Sister, "Unless you also want to be banished with him."

"Ah, no—" Salovis hastily replied, "I'm not trying to persuade mother, I agree with mother's decision."

"Your brother is banished, and as his sister, you actually support it? Aren't you siblings? Don't you feel any kinship?" the Mother Dragon said, "Or if one day I get killed, would you also wag your tail and cheer?"

"No." Dragon Sister felt extremely aggrieved, almost crying, feeling that whatever she said was wrong.

"Alright." The Mother Dragon's gaze returned to Leon, "Do you have anything else to say now? Sob and beg me? Cry out 'Mother dear, I am your good baby, please don't drive me away', or cling stubbornly and end up being thrown out by me by your tail, as pitiful as a dog?"

Leon was sure the Mother Dragon had a reason for suddenly banishing him, but he took a couple of deep breaths and proudly said: "I've been wanting to leave for a while now."

Leon turned around, preparing to leave.

"Wait!" the Mother Dragon suddenly said.

Leon stopped in his tracks.

"Remember you still owe me a million Gold Coins." the Mother Dragon reminded.

Leon turned his head to look at the Mother Dragon, said nothing, flapped his wings, flew up, suddenly remembering to ask, "Name, your name."

He didn't know why he suddenly wanted to ask the Mother Dragon's name, a name never mentioned by Salovis.

The Mother Dragon responded: "Anglistra."

Leon nodded, didn't speak further, and departed.

Anglistra watched Leon till he disappeared from view, then lay on the ground, thinking about her two children, one protected by her side, the other banished, lacking parental protection, but also spared from facing parental enemies—the Imperial people are quite troublesome, but even so, she wouldn't admit that dispelling shame was to clear up misunderstandings—the eggs shouldn't all be placed in one basket, surely one would survive somehow.

This eldest son, unlike the hot-tempered, arrogant Red Dragon, was more like a Human who knew when to bend and when to stand, although he hadn't inherited practical knowledge from his parents, he seemed to possess another special power, indeed Emperor Tiamat would never let any Red Dragon be at a disadvantage, unsure of what he will grow into.

The Mother Dragon glanced at Salovis, seeing the little girl pleasingly looking at her, she sighed heavily. There is nothing fiercer than marketplace competition. Compared to her eldest son, her young daughter really was naïve.

Sigh, sleep now, don't want to think about all these things.
