Tale of the Red Dragon Without Dragon's Might-Chapter 8 - The Truth
Chapter 8: Chapter 8 The Truth
The majority of dragons prefer to live alone, and nearly all Red Dragons are by nature solitary and fiercely territorial, vigilantly monitoring any intruders and infringements by other dragons.
However, the essence of Leon's soul is human, and humans belong to social animals... All in all, he can endure solitude, but he still has social needs.
Oh heavens, pity me, finally I can communicate and interact with people, Leon sniffled, moved to the verge of tears, but he didn't forget to ask, "What did she send you here for?"
"Your sister called you an idiot, so Lady Melt Throat sent me to check on you," Edwin paused, "You seem to be of normal intelligence; it's just that you can't understand our language."
The baby dragon looked around and said, "There's a slight issue with my Dragon Inheritance, just a tiny issue."
"What Dragon Inheritance?" Edwin frowned slightly.
"I've never heard of such a thing."
He pondered for a moment, then nodded pretentiously.
"It could indeed be called Dragon Inheritance... Baby dragons inherit substantial bodies filled with practical knowledge from their parents, though such knowledge is deeply buried in memory, unnoticed and unused, until they remember when needed."
Listening to Edwin's words, Leon's pupils involuntarily contracted.
He remembered that, according to the setting, Dragon Inheritance does exist to a certain extent, but there's no Dragon Inheritance where enormous memories continuously cram a baby dragon's head.
"You're quite clever," Edwin continued, "With such a problem, why not seek help from your Mother Dragon?"
The baby dragon felt like arguing; we've just met, barely talking more than a dozen sentences, how do you know I'm very clever?
"Not willing to be looked down upon by the Mother Dragon?" Edwin muttered to himself.
Dragons are creatures with a sense of superiority, for them, it's not just a dogmatic belief, but a fundamental fact. It's something they know from birth, the cornerstone of their personality and worldview. Trying to humble a dragon is like trying to tell the wind not to blow, or attempting to convince a starving person not to die of poverty.
"I understand." As the Chief Mage under the Mother Dragon, he actually didn't care about the pitiful self-esteem of the baby dragon.
"It won't do if you can't communicate... You can't always have someone cast the Universal Language for you."
Edwin sized up the baby dragon and said, "Magicians are born with the ability to cast spells. They don't rely on Magic Books or mentors, only on pure willpower. But to cast spells, one doesn't need to be a Magician; you could also be like me, a Mage."
"If you are willing, you can come to my lab and find me; I can teach you the Universal Language... Not Dragon Language, humans' vocal organs are different from dragons', I can't pronounce it accurately." Edwin turned to look away, "My lab is at the foot of the mountain, you'll know as soon as you fly up and see."
Edwin turned to leave.

Leon called out to him, stammering for a moment, and said, "I can't find you because I... I can't fly, just like I can't speak Universal Language or Dragon Language."
"If you can walk, then you can fly," Edwin raised his eyebrows, "Practice, spend more time practicing, rather than sleeping."
"Magic, I don't know Magic; I can't fly," said Leon.
Edwin looked towards the sky, and Leon followed his gaze to see, but there was nothing there.
"Birds don't know magic, so why can they fly?" Edwin said disdainfully.
"Birds can fly, but dragons must rely on magic...because dragons are too heavy," Leon said.
"Are you the dragon, or am I the dragon?" Edwin laughed, not caring in the least that it might provoke the baby dragon's ire.
"Many people think that a dragon's flight is due to magic, but as everyone knows, dragons can take off in Anti-Magic Zones where neither their Spells nor Spit Weapons work," Edwin nodded towards Leon, "The reason dragons can fly is that their weight is much less than other creatures of the same size, and the muscles that help them fly are particularly Strong, so their wings have enough power to get them airborne."
"Ah, is that so?" The baby dragon was confused. Had he misunderstood again? He'd seen quite a few setting books, really a mishmash.
Edwin didn't answer Leon and disappeared into thin air after casting a Teleportation Technique.
It took a while for Leon, who had come back to his senses, to remember the spot where Edwin used to stand, and thought to himself that Teleportation should belong to Seven-Ring Magic, requiring a professional level above 13 to master, meaning that Edwin must be at least a level 13 Mage, quite formidable, a kingdom-level master.
Mother Dragon didn't make an appearance before him in person, it was only Dragon Sister who came to find him yesterday, and upon discovering the anomaly on him, she reported to Mother Dragon, and then Mother Dragon summoned Edwin... It seemed Mother Dragon still cared about him, and it hadn't come to a point where she would be completely indifferent.
Leon let his mind wander a bit and remembered that his most important task now was to learn to fly. Once he could fly, the world from south to north would be within reach.
He had originally thought that flight relied solely on magic and quickly gave up after trying and failing to fly, deep down believing he simply couldn't do it. Now that he learned from Edwin that dragons' ability to fly didn't rely on magic, he was brimming with confidence—if not in one day then two days, and if not in two days then three.
Leon had always been fond of the program "Animal World" since he was little, knowing that many birds had to rely on wind to fly, taking advantage of the rising thermal currents invisible to the naked eye, such as albatrosses needing a headwind to take off, sometimes even running a bit or jumping from the edge of cliffs, and being unable to fly at all without wind...
In one day, Leon tried various ways to fly, flapping his wings on the spot, running while flapping his wings, running and then jumping and flapping his wings... He eventually ran up a slope facing the river and jumped off, so even if he couldn't fly, he wouldn't fall into a complete mess.
Perhaps he could try starting with gliding?
In any case, after about three days, Leon finally took off—bumping and fumbling, devoid of dignity and image, looking more like a big bat and a bumbling moth than a dragon. But since he remembered Dragon Sister flying just like that, he found a bit of comfort in his heart.
Leon hesitated for quite a while before giving up on searching for Mother Dragon. After all, how could he greet her without knowing the Universal Language? It seemed more important to find Edwin and learn Universal Language.
As Edwin said, as long as he flew high enough, it was easy to find his laboratory.
Leon landed without much effort before a manor that seemed obviously abandoned from the outside. There stood a tall Magic Statue at the entrance. Not daring to barge in, he could only stand at the doorway and shout loudly.
After waiting five minutes with no one coming out, Leon roared again, waited a few more minutes, and Edwin finally appeared.
"I thought you might start a fight with my Magic Statue," Edwin said.
"I forgot you don't understand Universal Language," Edwin gave a gesture of realization, while casting a spell on himself and Leon to comprehend languages.
"I've come," Leon said, "please teach me Universal Language."
"Trouble?" Edwin looked straight at Leon, "You're really the most polite dragon I've ever seen."
Leon paused, feeling perhaps he should act a bit more arrogantly, to be more like a Red Dragon. After struggling for a moment, he said, "You're welcome."
Edwin simply shrugged indifferently and started walking toward the house, saying, "Come on in."
