Chapter 36: The life worm Relic!

A while went by, and the group had fallen silent. Not that they chose to voluntarily, but thanks to the continuous struggling and yelling out at the Crow, they had finally lost the strength to do so.

Barely able to hold their consciousness together.

It now took so much energy to keep their minds from falling apart—talk less of actually speaking.

"Please..." one person muttered, his voice low and submissive, almost swallowed by the heavy air.

Oliver let his words linger for a moment before replying, "Not yet."

At least... not without the Relic.

The man, seeing how his words didn’t reach Oliver, turned over to his companions, his face pinned with regret and growing panic. "Boss..." he called out to the leader of the group.

However, no reply came.

He called out again... and then again.

Still nothing.

Then he turned to the others. One after the other, calling out to every single one of them, his voice cracking more each time.

In the end, only one person returned his calls.

It was the mage girl in the group, replying with nothing more than a low, pained groan.

At this, the man was confused. But even more... perplexed.

A cold unease crept into his chest.

He turned his gaze over to Oliver—the man sat upon the rocky throne he had created for himself. His posture resembled that of a king surveying his domain. His face... especially those eyes, were dark and empty, devoid of even the faintest trace of emotion.

He truly saw them as cattle.

"What did you do? Why aren’t they respawning..." he asked, his voice low rather than yelling, as though something deep within him had already begun to accept the truth.

"Within the game, there is a way to kill someone despite how many lives they possess. Simply by making it seem like suicide," Oliver began calmly. "Only big associations and a few individuals know this. Like your situation—I might have been the one that caused the bleeding, but after an hour of you all losing blood, it becomes your fault for not covering up your wounds. So when death occurs... it is seen as suicide."

Suicide was the only way to truly die in the game.

That meant...

The man stared once again at his comrades who had not responded to his calls and then he burst into tears, reality crashing down on him like a collapsing world.

He was going to die.

Oliver sighed lightly at the situation. It was something his Ki master had taught him about.

’The game has rules... but that definitely does not mean those rules cannot be bypassed by devious logic.’

More hours passed, and Oliver was unsure if anyone was still alive. He had been sitting for so long that his bottom began to ache, a dull reminder of the time slipping by.

Silence stretched endlessly.

Then—

Just as Oliver began to grow exhausted, his eyes caught something in the distance. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

At first, it looked like trees swaying gently in the wind.

However, after a while, the leaves continued shaking even when the wind had taken a brief pause.

Oliver’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Something was off.

Something was there.

Without hesitation, Oliver summoned the Dark Crow—the massive shadowy entity emerging beside him, its towering form radiating an ominous presence. Its hollow eyes locked onto the bush that trembled under an unseen force.

It needed no explanation.

Its body began to dissolve from its physical form, crumbling as though ice melting under extreme heat. In mere moments, it became nothing more than an eerie, shifting shadow.

The shadow moved.

With terrifying speed, it covered the distance between itself and the tree in less than a second.

Then—

SPLURT!

It burst out of the bush in its physical form, erupting forward with explosive force. In its claws, gently yet firmly grasped, was the body of a strange worm-like creature.

It flew back toward Oliver, dropping the wriggling creature into his open palm.

Oliver grabbed onto the body of the creature, his grip tight enough to restrain it without crushing it.

Then he stared at it slowly... studying its frame.

The fist-sized worm wriggled violently in his palm. Its body was hard as wood, yet flexible, its surface a disturbing mix of green and ash, perfectly designed to camouflage with its surroundings.

Without a doubt—

This was the Life Worm.

The Life Worm was a creature that would only be discovered two years later in the game. At least... that was when it was found in his first life.

And for its use—simple.

It was used to steal life from Players and store it for one’s own use.

This seemingly insignificant creature, one that starved endlessly for human blood... was, in truth, a complex weakness shared by all Players.

[Ding!]

[Life Worm Relic acquired. Would you like to subdue Relic?]

"Yes," Oliver replied bluntly.

[Cost: 200 Karma Points per hour]

Oliver wasted no time accepting the conditions.

’The price for subduing is higher than expected. When I got one in my first life, it was about ten Karma Points per hour... Is it because I am the first?’ he thought.

[Process has begun]

The Life Worm instantly disappeared from his grasp, dismissed into the system as the subduing process began.

To subdue a relic required a large amount of Karma Points and time, depending on the will of the Relic.

Unless... one was chosen by it.

Oliver could only imagine how many hours subduing the Life Worm would take.

’Hopefully, 1300 Karma Points will be enough.’

Now that he had what he wanted, there was no longer any reason to remain here.

So...

Oliver began to head back.
