Chapter 100: Party?

The news that House Chains had gotten Instructor Ardent as a patron spread through the entire Academy. Those who had been planning to take advantage quickly reconsidered.

They went through with the official way of applying. Severin saw the highest increase in member registrations that week, but he did not accept any.

His plan was to go through it later by first searching for the names of the people he already had in mind.

Getting Instructor Ardent on his House sent a strong message that the House was there to stay.

Not everyone liked that.

Instructor Ardent was infamous in the Academy. No one knew his background, family, or where he came from. Not even his level of power. Only that he could do as he wished, and not even the Head Instructor seemed interested in correcting him.

Even Severin did not know much about him because, in the book, the man battled with a terminal sickness that slowly sucked the life out of him.

Yet another character that should not be. At this rate, Severin had changed the future in such a way that even the author would not be able to untangle it.

Severin commissioned the House once it was completed.

The House was not the big castles of the other Houses. Severin did not have the money for that yet. Instead, he built it in the form of a tower.

Made of glass and metal, the tower stabbed the air like a sword.

It was not big, but for the small size it was, Severin did not hold back in spending money on it. Most of the building space was underground. The training center, the storage, and the armory were all underground. Even the rooms for his members were located underground.

The underground was the most protected, and it was created to be cut off from the upper section if need be.

The upper sections were for the chef, the guest room, and all other things that were not that important.

It was his first official building in the novel. Somehow, to him, it marked the beginning of something, the first of his legacy, perhaps.

He invited the other Houses, some instructors, students, and even the Head Instructor and threw a small party to open the House. freewebnøvel.com

At first, he did not want to do it, but then it was a common occurrence in the world to open a building that way. More importantly, Severin wanted to test the reaction of the other Houses toward his own House now that things were picking up.

Julius told him it would be a good idea and spent three days to convince him.

Also, the students that Severin invited were all the people who tendered their interest in the House. He wanted to see all of them together in one place.

Maybe the reason he also threw one was because he could. It was something he had never done before. In a way, it was his way of ticking something off his list.

The party was held in the evening, and it was going well until the guest that Severin did not invite appeared.

The Head Servant.

"What the? What is he doing here?" Julius asked in a hushed voice.

Everything seemed to slow down. The music lowered in volume, and everyone turned in the direction of the Head Instructor. But the man did not particularly care or seem as if he was interested in the party.

He went to meet Instructor Ardent, a glass of drink in his hand.

When it became apparent that he would not be doing anything, everyone relaxed a little. Maybe the Head Instructor was just out to enjoy his evening as well?

But Severin did not relax. His eyes traced the Head Instructor, and he realized that the feeling he was getting, the unease he had been feeling since his journey to the Cursed Land, had suddenly returned.

Something was going to happen.

It was tied to the Head Instructor.

"What is he planning now?"

Severin watched him as he talked quietly with Instructor Ardent. "I do not like this."

"I did not expect you would ever become a patron to a House. A House like this, of all of them," Head Instructor Darius said.

Ardent shrugged. Instead of a glass, he held a bottle in his hand, but he did not drink like he would, unlike before. He used alcohol to numb the pain from his bones, but now. "It is fun."

"Being a patron of a House is fun?" Darius looked at the man and shook his head. "I do not understand you. There are still opportunities in the Empire. The Emperor himself will give you..."

"I do not want to work again. I am retired."

"You are, but here you are, still working. You, who are deemed an asset of the Empire. Why do you waste your potential here?"

"You know why, old man. I have left fighting behind."

"Is it because of the sickness curse? You know, you can..."

"It is more than that." His voice had turned flat and flatter.

Darius finally blinked. "Oh. I see."

Ardent wasn’t the only one who was cursed, but he was the only one to survive. A whole company was wiped out, his friends, all gone.

Before, he had to use almost all his power to suppress it, creating a domain in his own body.

He had sworn never to fight again.

Darius knew about it as well.

The one-eyed man sighed. "Still. The Emperor might call you one day. You will use your last life to serve him."

Ardent looked at Darius with flat eyes. The one thing he hated about the man was the fact that he was one of those who served the Emperor and the Empire with passion.

He looked away from the man toward where his new students were standing, drinking, and enjoying. But their House leader was looking their way, at Darius, with a flat expression.

Ardent turned to the man. "What do you want here today?"

Head Instructor Darius Faulkner smiled. "I am going to test your student one final time. He will either fail or succeed. He is either strong or weak."

Ardent frowned. "What the fuck?"
