Narrator POV

Selene didn’t know why the Grand Lycan was suddenly on her side but she didn’t have the time as a luxury to analyze his real intentions. The goal now was to have the Pack Elders and Officials removed and have them replaced by her men.

She sank on her bed with every inch of her body aching with exhaustion and sore from Noah’s lustful ministrations a while ago. She knew she must have to keep him happy no what and the easiest way to do it is to make he’s always satisfied both emotionally and sexually. Things were aligning easily and she couldn’t afford for things to go sideways again.

A gust of wind blew into the room from the window making Selene jerk into a seating position as he gazes flew to the direction from which the sound had come. Her eyes widened with fear and surprise at the same time as she scanned her room, looking for anything she could use as a weapon, she settled for the hairbrush on the bedside table. As she waited for the intruder to come up, suddenly, Kurtis climbed into the room, panting as he fell on the floor.

"I’m sorry," he wheezed "I should have called or something but it’s urgent and I’ve been trying to reach you all day,".

"You can’t be here, Kurtis," Selene said with gritted teeth as she rushed to the door of her bedroom to lock it. "Noah will be here any minute, it’s dangerous. Also, Noah was about to call you, we need you to give us some of your soldiers to watch the pack tonight. I finally did it Kurtis. Even the Grand Lycan is on our side and thinks the pack elders and officials should be penalized. We’re this close to using our people, let’s not jeopardize this. So, leave, now... I’ll call you, okay?"

"You’re not listening to me, Selene," he hissed "There’s a problem... The Grand Lycan’s men are snooping around on you. He has them trying to dig up old things and I have a bad feeling that sooner or later they will find something and I need you to be careful. Leonard Carrell is more dangerous than his son... he’s determined to keep the Kingship in his line and he’ll do anything to achieve it,".

"Maybe he’s not as bad as we think he is," Selene sighed "I know this sounds crazy but he was a different person tonight. We forgave each other and he’s going to facilitate the removal of those pack elders and officials. That’s a good sign. I mean, maybe he’s ruthless and wants to protect what he holds dear to heart but isn’t it what we’re all fighting for? When you believe in something, you become ruthless. Fine! He’s snooping but he won’t find anything right? We made sure of that,".

"Still, you have to be careful," Kurtis said "Do you still have that journal? The one you started writing after you survived, where we have the plans in?"

"Nope, it’s not with me... I slipped it into the girls’ luggage on their way to Greyhound and don’t worry, I am the only one who can open it and no one knows what it looks like except me. By the way, how did you get past the guards? Leonard has them crawling around every nook and cranny of Moon Whisper?"

"C’mon, Selene... I know my way around the city better than anyone. Listen, stay safe and out of Leonard’s sight. I’ll keep in touch as soon as possible," Kurtis said.

"Sure!" Selene nodded flashing him a smile. She watched as he went to the window and without hesitating, jumped down. There was a small, known smile on Selene’s lips as she watched him leave. That wasn’t Kurtis.

When Kurtis landed on the ground after jumping down Selene’s window, he froze in his spot as someone came to stand in front of him immediately. When he looked up, it was Grand Lycan Leonard and he had a hard expression on his face. Without saying any word, he nodded to Kurtis who nodded back before he turned away and began to move with Kurtis closely behind him. They ended up on the path that led to the garden.

"You can change now," Leonard said, staring at him pointedly. Kurtis took one last glance around the entire place before he slowly transformed into his original nature. It was a fox. another of Leonard’s attempts to get into Selene’s head... to know what she was thinking, and what she’s doing but the little conversation she had with the fake Kurtis gave no tangible information.

"Why didn’t you just ask her the questions we practised with?" Leonard fumed "You went there and asked her a different question altogether. Is something wrong with you?"

"I’m sorry, your Majesty," the fox sighed "She would have caught on if I had asked her to remind me of our plans. We’re teammates for Moon’s sake, I should know all these things. Also, if I may sir, we should change our manner of approaching her. The queen doesn’t let her guard down. She didn’t fall for any of my clickbait questions. She only answers what you ask and nothing more,".

"Oh, just shut up!" Leonard screeched, fighting the primal need to go to Selene’s room now and slit her throat "You know what, just get out. I’ll reach out when I need you," he managed. Without waiting to be told the second time, the fox scrambled away. A few minutes later, the flower beds beside Leonard moved and Nora came out.

"I told you, Dad," She sighed "It’s pointless for us to keep using all of these crude methods. We must kill Selene, that’s the only way to get her out of the way. I know you’re worried about Noah but he’ll be fine eventually. The more we let her live, the stronger she becomes. I am sure she’s on some path because that is the only explanation for her repeatedly going against us all,".

"We cannot kill her, Nora," Leonard shook his head "She’s your grandkids’ mother and Noah will go berserk if anything happens to her. He’s never loved any woman the way he loves her and you know this," he sighed "We must think of another way,".

"Are you seriously going to help her remove the pack elders and officials? Isn’t it exactly what she wants?"

"We must, Nora," Leonard grunted "We need to disarm her and make her slip. All I need is one tiny, stupid mistake and I’ll take her out. Besides, I think it’s time for those elders and officials to go too. They dared threaten Noah in my presence with his position. I think they’re letting everything get into their head. It’s time for a change. You know... I will let Selene use her people... maybe that will help us sniff out what they’re about,".

"Yeah," Nora nodded "Do you want me to talk to...".

"That won’t be necessary," Leonard cut her short before she finished talking "I wonder what about him still endears you. Every other week he’s stuck in between the legs of one pack maid or dancing naked, drunk to a stupor. I warned you not to marry him Nora but you insisted and see how he gave you a weak child as pup? Assuming I had a child from you, I would have been planning to get Noah out and the child in but... that child of yours is hardly the right person to be King,".

"Dad, he’s my fated mate!" Nora cried "You think he doesn’t break my heart too. His numerous cheating scandals, all the women whom he got pregnant that I’ve had to kill? You think I enjoy doing this?"

"Perhaps," Leonard scoffed "There’s no such thing as fated mate, Nora! It’s a marketing strategy used by the Moon goddess to marry off unlikely pairs. It’s her means of weakening strong family bonds. Lycans should be with Lycans and not with Werewolves. The strong should marry the strong and the weak the weak. Is it so hard for you to understand?"

"But dad...". Nora’s eyes filled with tears "I love him... I cannot..." she trailed off.

"You will do as I have instructed, Nora," Leonard fumed "Look at your brother, his wife is the one calling all the shots. Do you think she’ll be ready for a baby in the next two years? You have to get pregnant and produce an heir for the family. It is your duty. If you cannot, you might as well stop being my daughter,".

"You’re asking for a hard thing, Dad," Nora cried "You’re asking me to cheat on my husband... I cannot. I cannot be with another man that’s not him,".

"That’s rich coming from you. Open your eyes, Nora he has cheated on you a lot of times that you’ve gotten so used to it. It’s time to live your own life and not do what the society demands. I’ll have my Beta make the final arrangement with whom you will be with. I made a careful selection to make sure there was no suspicion, he’s not from around here. Once you’re confirmed with the child, we’ll start making preparations to have Noah removed and to have your pup ascend the throne. Wouldn’t you want that?"

"You sound as if Noah is not your son. Why would I want to betray my brother? It’s unheard of father. What will he think if he finds out?"

"He should have thought of that when he abandoned me and you because of that woman. Nora... Noah is no longer the brother you grew up with. He’s a changed person. The fate of this family rests on your shoulders... this is no time for you to be weak with emotions... remember your training? It is time for you to rise and rid our family of weaklings, okay?"

"Yes..." Nora sniffed back tears, her eyes hardening "Yes Dad!"
