Xavier POV

I held Vina’s hands hoping she would make even the slightest signs that she was fine.

It was almost two weeks since she lost consciousness and I’ve contacted every doctor I knew but none has been able to resuscitate her since then and for probably the millionth time, I wish I had listened to Lucius. He had a way of seeing things up front.

He had warned me about Belinda but in my stubbornness, I had taken it lightly. Of course, I wasn’t going to do anything for her but she convinced me she was changed now and was tired of being a rogue. No other pack will take her in and the thought of her roaming in the forest all alone broke my heart. She was a beautiful woman and would be easy prey for anyone who came across her.

I was a fool for trusting her.

She had poisoned my food and I had delayed coming home because of a meeting, Maeve said that Vina thought my food looked my sumptuous than theirs and wanted to take a spoon... she went unconscious immediately. She was still alive no doubt but it seemed to me like she was losing consciousness every day.

"You should go and freshen up," Lucius came up beside me "I’ll watch her,".

"No!" I shook my head "I don’t want her to wake up confused. So, I’ll just stay here a bit more. Can you ask them to get me something to eat at least?"

"Xavier!" Lucius sighed and squatted near me "I know you’re distraught and it doesn’t help that Selene has been calling at least a dozen times every minute but you’re also neglecting Maeve. She needs her dad now because it’s been a traumatizing experience and she knows she cannot ask because she thinks it’s selfish. If you want Vina to pull through this, you should at least smell nice. Who knows, it’s the smell that’s keeping her from waking,".

A smile touched my cracked lips the happiest I’ve been in a long while. "What do we do about Selene though? If she calls one more time and there’s no response, she might come down here and if she ever finds out, she’ll never let me see the girls, ever," I cried.

"Don’t worry about, Selene," Lucius said quietly "She’s too busy fighting with her in-laws and husband to have the luxury of coming down here for a visit and I think you should respond to her call and if she asks for the girls, have Maeve answer twice. They’re twins and their voices sound alike so she won’t notice a thing,".

"She won’t notice a thing?" I scoffed "She’s their mother, Lucius and I know she senses everything is not fine, so we cannot lie to her. I think we should call her. She’d know what to do. Honestly, I’m scared that something may happen to her and if anything, ever happens to her, I’ll not forgive myself,".

"Well, you cannot travel now!" Lucius sighed "Alpha Jared has restricted any form of travelling out of the region. I have zero idea why he’s doing that but our men say he’s frantically looking for someone and my best bet is Belinda,".

"Belinda?" I narrowed my eyes at Lucius "No way! There’s nothing that can join both of them together. Jared is very far from us, so...".

"She’s been visiting the other pack too, Xavier," Lucius interrupted me. "From what I’ve gathered, she’s been sleeping with the other Alphas and getting information from them and they think she’s selling all the information to Jared. Jason says he once shared an idea with her and a few months later, Jared replicated that. I am not concluding yet but we have to make sure that he doesn’t suspect that we have her. Also, we’ll need to move her,".

"Move her? Why?" I asked.

"Jared knows that she came to Greyhound last and if he cannot find her, he would look for an excuse to search the pack. So, we must be quick and make sure we hide her before that time. When you’re back from your break, I’ll go and supervise her transfer. I’ve selected our trusted men and it’ll be so discreet that no one will know it’s her,".

"Or we could do it at night," I suggested.

"No!" Lucius shook his head. "It’ll be too dangerous and will draw a lot of eyes. Besides, who knows how many of Jared’s men are in the pack? You need to speak to Noah as soon as possible, he promised to have Jared removed but he’s not making any move. If Jared continues this tyranny, he’s begging for a war and a war is the last thing we need in our region,".

"Yeah!" I sighed "I’ll reach out to him again,".

As I turned to leave, I stopped in my tracks when I saw Maeve hanging at the door. "Hey sweetheart," I dropped to my knees in front of her "How long have you been standing there? Do you want me to get anything for you dear?"

"No!" she shook her head as her eyes darted to her sister "I’m so sorry, Daddy. I was supposed to look after Vina. I’m supposed to know but ...I’m sorry," she broke down in tears as she flung her tiny arms around my neck. "She’s going to die, Daddy. Her wolf doesn’t respond to me anymore and I’m scared. Maybe we should call mummy,".

"I wish we could, sweetie," I hugged her tightly "And don’t say such things, okay? Nothing will happen to her. She’ll survive and come back to us, okay? And you know if we let your mummy know she’ll be very mad. Maybe we could try a few things and...".

"Nothing will work!" she pulled away from me staring at me earnestly "Belinda is a witch dad. I’ve wanted to tell you this for the longest time but I was scared that you won’t believe me and she used a potion on Vina that keeps her mind trapped. Even if she tries to wake, she cannot,".

My body froze as I stared at Maeve trying to make sense of everything "She’s a witch? How do you know?"

"Dad!" she sighed tiredly "I just know and we’ll need for the spell used on the potion to be broken. Maybe mummy can help. She has helped us to get out of these states a lot of times. Or we could look for Mummy’s friend and ask him for help,".

I exhaled and closed my eyes hoping I wasn’t hearing things. I knew the girls were special but this was too much. I had sincerely thought all the things Selene had told me was to make the girls more confident or maybe it was just their way of communicating but hearing these things myself made me confused.

"Kragen!" Maeve sighed "He’s a very good healer and would know what to do in this kind of situation,".

"What if we go back and ask Belinda to break the spell," Lucius suggested.

"No good will come out of it," Maeve shook her head "She’s far too gone and Belinda is not strong enough. I can sense that Mummy’s friend is in the Pack and is heading towards the pack house. We need to get him to come look at Vina. He’ll know what to do. Please...".

"Okay!" Lucius nodded "I think I remember what he looks like. Do you want to come with me to go find him?" he asked.

"C’mon, Lucius... we don’t know anything yet. This might just be childish gibberish and nothing more. Let’s analyze the situation first and know what we’re going into first before anything,".

"Except you have a better idea, Xavier which you don’t. So, let’s trust Maeve. Watch Vina, I’m going out. We’ll return shortly,".

A few minutes later, they returned with a man that looked so handsome. As a man, it’s difficult to admit that your fellow man was handsome but Kragen or whatever his name is – was a perfect specimen of masculinity. But how does he know Selene from the way Maeve was comfortable with him, he seemed to be a regular face.

"Oh goddess!" he exclaimed and ran past me towards Vina "The child is almost gone you did well by coming to find me, Maeve. Now, clear the room I need to be with her. Ask for saffron and a bottle of mugwort delivered to us now. We don’t have time,".

"May I ask what you’re going to do with her and how do you know, Selene?" I asked maintaining my stance.

"We don’t have time for these question-and-answer sessions, Alpha. Leave the room or I’ll make you do," the man said fiercely giving me a pointed stare. Before I could retort, Lucius dragged me out of the room pissing me further.

"We don’t even know who he is and you want him to be with Vina? What’s wrong with you?" I blew hot.

"Didn’t you hear him... she’s almost gone, Xavier. Don’t be blinded by pride and allow him to help her. We don’t have an option at this point. So, it’s either you shut the fuck up or I’ll have to do it for you.,".

"You can trust him, Daddy," Maeve came to hold my hands "He saved you the last time you were unconscious. He’s a very nice person, please give him a chance,".

"He saved me?" My brows arched with confusion "What are you talking about?"

The door leading to Vina’s room suddenly opened and the man came out carrying Vina on his shoulders, he had a blank look on his face.

I rushed towards him, my heart panting with fear. Vina moved in his hands and raised her head to look at me.

"Daddy," she murmured weakly with a smile.
