Chapter 205: I was going to forgive him...

Selene POV

My heart broke as I dressed the girls, trying my best to keep them as warm as possible and not to break down in front of them. I had barely thirty minutes before my hearing and I needed to ensure their safety more than anything.

Faustina and Brenna were my only options.

"Please..." I said in a strangled voice "Take care of my girls for me. They’re all I have... please,".

"Don’t worry, your majesty," They smiled assuring "We will protect them with our lives. We would also be on the lookout for their father. You could also come with us..." they said quietly "There’s a path that leads outside of the pack house at the lower villages. No one knows about the path and we could slip you through it... towards the Northern borders. We have some savings and the women too have pitched in what they have...it’ll be enough to get you out of Moon Whisper and settle you for a few weeks before we can send more,".

Tears gathered in my eyes as I stared at them "And here I was thinking I was all alone in this world," I laughed "Thank you all so much but I cannot keep running away forever. Running will not solve the problem, besides... my hands touched my belly "I am pregnant with His Majesty’s child... if I leave now... I won’t be able to prove that it’s his,".

"Oh!" the women covered their mouths "Congratulations, Your Majesty. May the goddess keep him safe,".

"Yeah!" I nodded "I hope it’s a boy... I’m done dealing with girls," I joked and we all cackled with laughter. I turned to my children... to Vina who was unusually quiet and to Maeve who had moved away from me, her face contorted into anger. "Can you excuse us for one minute, I need to talk to the girls?" I asked them.

They nodded and left the room. I went down my knees, stretching my hands towards the girls. Vina came to me immediately, her tiny hands wrapping around my neck as she pressed into me. It took a few seconds for Maeve to drag her feet to me but I was glad she did. The three of us stayed together in a hug until I pulled away, patting the girls’ heads gently.

"I’m sorry for not coming sooner for you. If I had known...".

"It’s not your fault, mommy or dad’s. Grandma is just a very mean woman and we’re victims. Are you truly going to have another baby?" Vina asked staring curiously at my stomach.

"Yes!" I nodded reaching for their hands and placing them on my stomach. Very soon we’ll be three and we must look out for each other no matter what. I’m sorry that I have to go back and face those people but I must make sure they all know I am carrying Noah’s child. Else..."

"We understand, Mommy," Vina smiled at me, patting my hand comfortingly. "Will you be alright though? Shouldn’t we be with you?" ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

"No dear!" I shook my head "Just stay with your nannies and do whatever they ask you to do. Don’t worry about a thing, okay?" My gaze rested on Maeve who wasn’t saying anything. "I’m sorry, Maeve. I know you’re angry with me and I wish you could tell me how to make it right?"

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she shook her head "It’s too late, Mommy. You don’t love us as much as you did before. First, it was Uncle Noah and now..." she stopped as her gaze went to my stomach "He’d soon become the Centre of your world and you’d desert us again or better still keep us with dad so you can work on your marriage?"

"Maeve!" Vina screeched nudging her sister.

"It’s true!" Maeve yelled, "We heard what you told Noah the other time and you took us to Daddy because you were tired of having us around and maybe we were not letting you enjoy your marriage,".

"Th-that’s not true..." I sputtered "You both are the center of my world and I’ll never trade it for anything. I agree that I have not been the most attentive parent but I love you both, so much. You’re more important to me than anything in this world, I promise,".

"Important?" Maeve scoffed "You go for days ignoring us. Making promises that you’d never fulfil. I’ll eat lunch with you girls later, I’ll do this I’ll do that and you forget every single thing you say. We know we’re not as important as your dear Noah so don’t try to pretend now,".

"Oh, my world!" I shook my head "That’s not true, Maeve... I love you both... so much than you can ever imagine and the reason I took you to be with your dad was to avoid feuds like this and to keep you both safe. The Carrells do not have moral scruples, from how we were treated yesterday, it’s enough for me to be scared that you might be in danger. That’s why. It’s never because I don’t love you. I was just trying to keep you both safe,".

"But you used to keep us safe with you before," Vina said quietly, "We used to be one big and happy family before Daddy came on the scene or even Noah. You’d always want us to be close to you no matter what. That’s what matters Mommy. We know you’re trying your best but your quest for revenge has made you forget what’s more important,".

My heart shook violently as I stared at the girls. "Y-You know?" I asked.

"Of course, Mommy..." they rolled their eyes "We’ve always known what you’re up to and we’ve kept it to ourselves for a reason. If anyone should know your plans, you’d be in trouble," Maeve said.

"I’m sorry..." I sighed gazing downwards "Sometimes, I forget how powerful you both are and you’re right... I’ve lost sight of what matters to me the most. You know what..." I smiled "I think I’ll just take up Faustina and Brenna’s offer. We might go somewhere abroad... start a new life there just us girls and the new baby. I don’t want this to tear us apart and I very much want to be part of your lives every day,".

"And let grandma get away with everything?" Maeve hissed "No mummy... you need to stay and maybe fight. We’re not against that and for the record, Daddy is such a terrible person to stay with,".

"What!" my eyes widened with shock. Maeve was such a Xavier’s girl, I was surprised that she could bad mouth him.

"You have no idea, mummy," Vina sighed "He keeps forgetting our eating regimen and always mixes it up. Then, he lets us stay past our bedtime every night and practically doesn’t check what we eat, drink or even watch. Don’t get me started on the oversized clothes he bought for us claiming he knew they were for us immediately he saw it and didn’t know clothes come in sizes,".

"Oh my!" I laughed glad that the tension between me and Maeve had reduced and the anger towards me had ebbed. "No wonder you’re so skinny,".

"Yeah, and Vina got a boyfriend too," Maeve announced trying to hold back her laughter. "He’s a sweet boy but Vina is so scared of telling Daddy, she fears he might banish him from the pack,".

"Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me," I winked, loving the pleasant way they sounded as they laughed. This was everything I wanted... the laughter, the happiness, the non-ending joy and I was going to get it, no matter what.

Sighing, I brought them close to me again, hugging them "I have to go now, darlings. I’ll see you after the hearing, okay?"

"We have an idea how everything will turn out..." Maeve said quietly "Do you want to know?"

"NO!" I shook my head "It’ll be too nerve-wracking for me. I’d prefer for things to happen naturally but thank you for your kind offer. Now, I must hurry,".

We hugged one last time and I practically fled the room. One more minute there and I would never leave them. When I left my room, a guard was outside waiting for me. I let him lead me towards the courthouse, ignoring the pointed stares I got from the officials and the pack elders when we arrived.

I walked into the court, with my head held high and without emotions on my face. I sat through the session of them levelling accusations at me. Of course, since I had no advocate, it was just me, no one was speaking for me. The pack elders and officials came and testified one after the other about how much I’d plotted the downfall of the pack. The only thing I wasn’t accused of at that moment was trying to kill Noah in an accident.

By the time they finished, the judge... one of the former pack officials turned to me, hatred evident in his eyes. This was all formality, I know but I only have to try my best.

"Do you have anything to add?" he asked me.

"Yes!" I nodded and rose to my feet "I have a couple of questions to ask Nora, his Majesty’s sister but before that, I want to play a video to the court to see,".

Everyone gasped loudly. I could see Nora shifting uncomfortably in her seat. "My Judge, the evidence has not been vetted in court," one of the defence counsels said.

"Don’t worry, it’ll be of no importance anyway. Go ahead and play the video," the judge nodded to the court clerk. Some seconds later, Loud voices came on as Nora alongside some foxes stood beside Noah’s wrecked car. Nora had a satisfied smile on her face and not just that... beside her stood the pack elders and officials.

To an ordinary eye, one might think they were there as witnesses to the wreckage but a few seconds later, one of the pack officials asked. "Are you sure he’s dead? We want to make sure he doesn’t have a chance of survival before taking him to the hospital?"

My gaze flitted to where the Grand Lycan sat down... stunned and in rage at the same time. He rose to his feet, his eyes sought mine for a few seconds and then his daughter’s. "You!" he growled "You all are on this?"

Even the Judge currently on my case was in the video.

"Your Majesty," I turned to the Grand Lycan "This was a deliberate plot to end Noah’s life as revenge I think but anyways, before we go further, I’d also like to charge Nora of attempted murder. I am carrying His Majesty’s child and was thrown into the dungeon like a common slave,".

If the video had surprised them... the announcement of my pregnancy made them speechless. I pulled out the lab result and handed it over to the clerk. "That is the lab result and also, you could send in a doctor right now to prove my claims. By the laws of the land, anyone carrying the royal baby is supposed to be treated with utmost care and respect... failure to do so... will lead to several months in the dungeon and if anything should happen to the baby as a result of that... it’s punishable by death but I don’t have to mention all of these. We all know the rules,".

The courtroom turned into an uproar, wondering what could be the problem, I turned and stood stunned as Noah walked in... behind him was Kragen.

Our eyes met and held... I knew I was going to forgive him.
