Chapter 110: Many blushes... and a walking Hazard.

~Dahlia’s POV~

"Mate." The word bounced against the confines of my mind as Sadie literally walked me back to Shadowfang pack.

The trek back was awkwardly silent and tedious, and if it wasn’t for the fact that I was trying to still keep my wolf from the prying eyes of these people, I’d have asked them to shift with me and run back to the pack. I mean, it was quicker that way.

Except that I wasn’t the only one lying about being an Omega.

My eyes snapped up to Sadie’s to see her brows furrowed as she squinted into the dark forest before us. Despite the cold, a sheen of sweet glistened on her forehead, pooling at her temple, and her hands, odiously cold, were clammy to the touch.

Beta Orion on the other hand, had a frown on his face and from the way he walked protectively in front of us, it was obvious that he was trying to shield us from any type of harm.

—That or he was letting us know just who was strongest amongst us.

I secretly thanked the gods that Sadie was here with us, because this way, it was close to impossible to have him trying to pry out information from my lips. Or bringing up his usual ’marry me’ nonsense he always did whenever we were alone together.

As if sensing my straying thoughts, Beta Orion called my bluff by suddenly asking; "How did you get to Hollowfang pack?"

My breath hitched. I was so shocked that I even stumbled on my own feet, causing Sadie to instinctively grab my arm, steadying me. "I grew bored after being bedridden for days, and decided to take a walk to clear my mind, as well as give the old woman in my ward some privacy as she conversed with her family. I didn’t even know I’d gone so far."

Beta Orion turned briefly to look at my face, and then at my legs, he noticed my fake limping and asked; "You limped all the way there?"

"Like I said, I didn’t know what I was doing."

"Fair." He whispered, more to himself, but loud enough that both Sadie and I had heard him. We fell into an uncomfortable silence that was soon shattered when he suddenly began to speak again.

He asked; "And what kind of drab are you wearing?"

I rolled my eyes at him, not bothering to hide my annoyance. "I don’t have clothes at the hospital. This..." I pointed at the cloth with tight lips, "...was given to me by a nice old lady because the one I’ve been wearing for days is dirty."

At my outburst, the Beta turned to me with eyes flashing with an emotion I couldn’t place. He suddenly stopped walking to sniff at the cloth but then raised his head seconds after with eyebrows scrunched in confusion. "It has no smell."

"Really?" I asked sweetly— too sweetly.

I was simply trying to evade his incessant prying.

"Dahlia, how could you accept a cloth that has no smell? What if it’s cloaked?" He snapped worriedly, and yes, I understand that he was worried about me. And I understand that I may sound like an ingrate at the moment, but I couldn’t put up with him now as I was too tired after everything that’s happened.

Right now, I just wanted to be left alone to wonder why a new mate was suddenly materializing out of the blues.

I wanted to be left alone to wonder how he seems to know me even though I could swear that I’ve never seen him in my entire life.

I wanted to know why he was quick to jump into my aid.

I wanted to know the contents of the paper he had squeezed into my hands earlier, and I couldn’t check with these people around me.

I pressed my lips together when I looked up to find Beta Orion still watching me intently, and I sighed. "Well, I didn’t think about it that way. I was just glad that I didn’t have to smell someone else’s sweat or bodily fluids on it."

Sadie, the quiet one since the conversation began, chuckled at that. Her eyes lit up in amusement when she turned to me, but she said nothing.

She was scared of Beta Orion obviously.

I smiled back.

"Can you walk the rest of the way?" Beta Orion suddenly asked, snapping me out of my haze. I glanced up to find him already staring at me— not directly at me, but my legs. "They do not look fully healed."

If only he knew that they’re stronger than his right now...

I nodded. "I can try."

"No, come let me carry you the rest of the way." He supplied, ignoring the strange looks on I and Sadie’s faces.

I instantly opened my mouth to refuse him, but I clamped it back shut when his large arms wrapped around my back and the back of my knees. He pulled me up in bridal style and began to take large strides without stopping to ask if I was settled in or not— Not that I mind the princess treatment.

We arrived at the pack several minutes—if not hours— later, drained and thirsty and after settling me into the hospital, and on my usual bed, Beta Orion promised to come back later before he finally left.

Sadie stayed longer but after a while, she left too, asking to go tend to Amara’s needs because my baby would soon be awake.

And I thanked her profusely for keeping an eye on my child in my absence before she left.

However, it wasn’t until everyone was gone that Grandmama Lupe peeled her eyes open slowly, and I gasped when I was met with swirling gold orbs.

"Your eyes..." I muttered breathlessly, and she smiled softly before pushing herself into a sitting position. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"What’s wrong with them?"

"They glow in a weird way... with different colors. I wonder how you do it." I answered, my voice still lidded with awe.

Grandmama Lupe smiled at me. She touched her eyelids slowly as if trying to feel the colors I was talking about before she suddenly dropped her hands, folding them together between her laps. "My children used to say that." She sighed in a dreamlike manner.

"You have children?"

’Oh dumbo! Of course she does! Dr Ava is her grandchild remember?’ My wolf— Nyx’ara— snapped, and I rolled my eyes at her.

"I had." Grandmama Lupe answered softly. "They’re all dead now. And all I have left is Ava."

"Oh."

"But it just happens," she rushed out, desperately trying to lighten the gloomy atmosphere, "they just glow whenever they want to and I cannot control it. It’s one of the reasons people say I’m crazy!" She laughed.

"You’re not crazy." I murmured more to myself than to her, and I noticed how a warm smile spread across her lips.

"I am, child."

"What are you?" I couldn’t help but ask and I saw her pause her lips for a moment before she smiled again.

"Does it matter?"

I shook my head at her. "No, it doesn’t." It does matter... a lot!

Grandmama Lupe’s smile brightened as she tilted her head at me. Her eyes snagged on the large tunic still draped over me like a shield and then they glinted mischievously. "Now, tell me, what happened during your escapade?"

As soon as the words left her lips, a fierce blush tainted my face, causing my cheeks and the tips of my ears to burn in both embarrassment and shyness.

An image of Alpha Kai flashed across my mind, causing my already traitorous body to palpitate in wild wanton emotions barely contained. I dropped my gaze.

"A lot."

"That sounds like a lot of fun!" She giggled, making me laugh as more blush crept up my face.

Suddenly remembering the presence of paper that Alpha kai had stealthily stuffed into my hands, I pushed my hands into the tunic’s pocket and fished it out and after smoothening it out, I noticed that it was a small brown paper with chapped edges.

Several sentences were scribbled boldly in it, and it read;

"Hey Dahlia, I wish we had the opportunity to talk earlier, and I hope we do someday. I want you to know that I am here for you. I always am. And always will be.

We have a past. One I cannot say over a flimsy piece of paper that can easily get into the wrong hands. So I’ll hold onto the hopes that fate will bring us together another day to talk about it.

See you soon, Mate."

Mate

M. A. T. E.

The word slammed into me with so much force, and his words managed to jumble up my mind more than it already was, but strangely all I could think about right now was how dreary this whole situation was.

How complicated it was.

And how badly Alpha Zarek would take it.

Bloody hell, I was indeed a walking hazard.
