The Alpha's Omega Mate-Chapter 96: And the world went… black.
~Dahlia’s POV~
The first thing I noticed when Alpha Zarek stepped further into the room was the charged atmosphere between both men, and instantly, I knew that they had something going on that I probably didn’t know about.
Or did I?
Did I know before the ’accident’?
Besides the time Beta Orion turned to acknowledge Alpha Zarek’s presence when he approached the door, he didn’t turn again to face him. They both didn’t speak even a word to each other, and the Beta seemed downright uncomfortable with my mate’s presence.
Glancing between both men and noticing their passive aggression toward each other, I shrunk deeper into my bed, almost suffocating under the weight of their blasting pheromones, and then I whispered; "Alpha... I didn’t know you’d come."
"As I should." Alpha Zarek simply responded but he didn’t say anything more.
A smile almost crept up my face when I noticed how Beta Orion shifted from foot to foot now, and after probably realizing that the Alpha was here to stay, he patted my arm gently and said; "I have a few things to attend to now, so I’ll be on my way."
Someone growled.
"And we have a few things to talk about later..." Alpha Zarek drawled, interrupting him. "... so I’ll like to see you later. In my chambers."
I saw Beta Orion gulp as soon as he heard those words, but he didn’t push it. He didn’t even try to argue even though I could see how reluctant he was to agree to that. Instead he bowed his head curtly and patted my arm again; "I’ll see you later then, Dahlia." He said softly with his hands in mine, and this time, as he did, another low growl sounded across the room causing the hairs on my skin to stand on end.
"Get off her! You’ve been rubbing your scent all over her like a darn youngling in love!" Alpha Zarek growled in a voice dripping with disgust and I flinched in both shock and confusion.
My eyes darted to meet the green ones that always seemed to tilt my world in its axis and when he caught me staring, he tipped his head slightly and smiled. My heart warmed.
A few more seconds of shuffling plunged the room into silence and after Beta Orion was finally out the door, Alpha Zarek turned to the doctor who for some reason was still rooted in place, and then he snarled; "Who are you?"
My breath hitched just as my eyes widened in shock.
He doesn’t even know her?
I saw the doctor fidget slightly before turning to him, and with her head bowed so low it nearly touched the floor, he replied in a shaky voice. "And I am Zorina, the first born child of Meredith and Kyle Spencer, the slaver—"
"What are you doing here is what I ask." Alpha Zarek snapped interrupting her, and I watched in a combination of both worry and fascination as she gulped. She was obviously shaking and she wouldn’t stop shifting from foot to foot.
"I am a doctor in training and I am standing in for Dr Ava because she’s indisposed."
"Okay good," he drawled, and then turning to face me, he snarled; "Now get out!"
For a moment, I was frozen in place.
My heart thrummed in my chest as I stared open mouthed at him in shock. It took me a few seconds to regain my composure and when I finally did, I stuttered; "M-my leg’s in a cast and hung as you can see. I most definitely cannot move."
Alpha Zarek smiled. Like really smiled. He flashed me a toothy grin, one that made his stupidly beautiful dimples show, and shook his head. "I mean Dr Zorina."
I sighed just as the doctor balked.
And as she scurried out of the room seconds later, I couldn’t help but feel relieved. She had rubbed off on me the wrong way and something about her and the way she did not seem to want to step out of the room made me extremely uncomfortable.
I turned my gaze to Alpha Zarek, now suddenly noticing that he’s been clutching something in his hands all along. His eyes roved the bed in a slow motion and when he caught sight of the flower sitting pretty beside me, the frown on his face deepened.
In a fluid motion, he picked it up and dumped it in the far end of the room, and in its place, he placed a shiny ceramic flask. He murmured; "When one is sick and recovering, you don’t give them flowers, you give them good food to hasten their recovery process."
I smiled, shaking my head. "But I’m not sick."
He rolled his eyes and snorted. "You have a limb covered in bloodied gauze. You cannot move around yet. So to me you’re sick and you deserve good food than some flowers that look like they’re about to wither."
Now, I couldn’t help the smile threatening to split my face in half. "They don’t look like they’re about to wither anyway. Moreover they’re my favorite flowers!"
"If you like them so much then I’ll have the florist send you a bouquet of fresh ones tonight, but first you need to eat. Right, Mara?" He said, crouching to be on eye level with Amara who instantly beamed like a light bulb.
"Yes, Zareeq!" 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
And I snorted.
Usually, I knew that I should find Amara’s weird love for Alpha Zarek cute, but in all honesty, I didn’t. There were times such as now that I couldn’t help but fear that she liked him too much— so much that it’ll hurt her fragile heart when she learns of the kind of monster that he could be— and I wanted to protect her from him. From that him.
I whispered; "Thank you for the food."
"You’re welcome." He answered quietly, his voice suddenly sounding serious. "...anyway Dahlia, I’d love to talk to you about something." He added, and as soon as the words left his lips, dread like a bile settled at the base of my stomach.
I took in a shuddering lungful of air and raised my eyes to meet his striking green ones. "And what is that?"
I watched him as he moved to pull a chair in a corner of the room closer to the bed, and after carefully placing Amara on the bed, he sat down too. Sudden warmth crept up my spine when he held my hands in his and I watched in confusion when he looked up at me with wide surprised eyes.
It looked like he’d half expected me to snatch my hands away, and I couldn’t help but wonder what must’ve happened to make him think that way.
And then... like a broken tape, a memory resurfaced in my mind.
—One of Ms Jennifer bouncing over his cock like a frigging ball.
I frowned. "Alpha—"
"Why did you jump, Dahlia?"
The question came like a blow to my guts and I swallowed hard because for some reason, it was the last thing I’d expected him to ask me. A frown etched its way into my face as I stared up at his worried eyes. And for the first time in the last several minutes, I thought hard about it.
I squeezed my eyes shut, wracking my brain for a memory... or anything that could help me out here and when I came up with nothing, I dropped my gaze, my lips trembling.
I said; "I don’t know."
"Dahlia please..."
"I really don’t know." I interrupted him quickly whilst blinking back the tears that had begun to sting the back of my eyelids. "It feels like my brain has been wiped clean."
"And what is the last thing you remember?"
"I remember reluctantly eating the food you’d sent Sadie to bring to Amara and I... and nothing else."
Alpha Zarek gasped. For a minute, he looked like he had a hard time believing my words, and then he whispered; "So you don’t remember telling me you wanted to be with my Beta? And that you wanted to run off into sunset with him?" He asked, causing my jaws to drop in shock.
"And why would I say that—" I began to say until his entire words echoed in my head. I snorted. "I know I didn’t say that!"
"Oh yes, you did. And you told me to my face."
"I wouldn’t." I snapped indignantly, ready to argue until Ms Jennifer’s face flashed in my mind’s eye one more time.
...and the way her skin looked flushed as she bounced against him.
I frowned. Maybe I said it. I can imagine saying something like that to him after everything I’ve seen. But I didn’t say that out loud, instead, I looked away from him whilst trying my hardest to ignore the sudden splitting ache searing my heart into pieces.
"You should eat by the way, or do you want me to help you with that too? I mean I can but if you ask nicely..." he began to say but before the words could fully slip past his lips, I turned to him quickly and shook my head.
"I can feed myself just fine. Thank you again for the food, butI think you should leave now."
Alpha Zarek froze.
"Dahlia?"
"Please leave!" I cried out in frustration. With each passing second, peeling the image of him and Ms Jennifer from my mind felt like a tough sport, and it made breathing impossibly difficult.
My breath came in short painful gasps and my body trembled with an ache so deep, it made my wolf recoil into a deep dark corner.
"Can I come back later to see you?" I vaguely heard him ask me, but I couldn’t bring myself to respond because my heart felt too heavy to make out words. And my vision waned so badly, I felt I would fall.
Tears glistened in my eyes as I watched him rise to his feet. He said something else to me but I was too deep in my daze to make out the words.
And then, the world began to spin. Sounds felt like white noise ringing at the back of my skull... like some faded music from a different world.
And the world went... black.
