Chapter 18: All That Matters

The first thing Eve did once her eyes flew open in the morning was hurry out of the bed, however as soon as she set her feet on the floor, she tripped, luckily catching herself on her palms and knees.

She was quick to stand to her feet, breathing out in relief that she hadn’t taken a fall.

"You are surprisingly very clumsy."

She slowly lifted her gaze at the sudden voice to meet a pair of golden eyes peering at her.

Malakai, hair in a low man bun and clad in sweatpants hanging low on his waist, looked at her, coffee in his grip.

She looked at him.

He stared at her.

She slowly cracked a crooked smile. She knew what he was going to say; the glasses, she should have gone for them first before getting out of bed.

"It’s not the glasses. I’m just long sighted."

"I know." Malakai nodded and took a sip of his coffee. "You’re just very clumsy."

She shot a brow at him. "I’m working on it." Her gaze followed him as he walked over to the mini table close to the bed and picked up her glasses.

He set his coffee aside before returning back to her. Eve craned her neck to stare at him, even though he was a blur due to being so close to her. She could only see him properly from afar without the glasses.

The man fixed the glasses onto her face and tucked her hair behind her ear. He came into her full vision and she watched him as his thick, gentle fingers ran over her neck, causing her to shiver a little.

She didn’t recoil, nor break eye contact with him. She just stood as still as a statue, forgetting how to breathe by every passing second.

Such a...a gentle beast of a man.

"Don’t do that," she mumbled with a hazy look.

"Do what?" Malakai asked, smiling at her, eyes drooping with slow heavy blinks.

"Your pheromones. You’re letting them loose."

He made no response, but instead, rubbed the under of her left eyes before cupping her cheek and walking off to his coffee.

Eve lifted her hand to where his touch had been and looked at him to find him gazing at her with no sign of looking away.

She rapidly blinked, stuttering, "I’ll uh...c-check the news."

She turned her back on him before he could say a word and picked up her phone from the bed. She unlocked it, going through the tabloids immediately. The further she scrolled, the more her heart raced and she slowly turned to Malakai.

"T...TUD."

"What about it?" Malakai asked, taking a seat on the white loveseat.

"They did the writing!" She was bewildered. "They have always written for the Zolotovs’, so why have they written in my favor?"

He shrugged. "Magic happens."

"Magic?" She raised a brow at him. "You pulled strings and I know it. Take a look at this."

She walked over to him to sit comfortably on her knees in front of him. "The first article of hundreds in here at least said and I quote; Billionaire, Patro Zolotov, who’d accused ex-mate/ ex-wife of cheating has been found out. It turns out to be all lies, but simply a game of grudge on his part. Recordings from many sources proves ex-wife, Eve Basti innocent of his accusations."

Eve was practically smiling from ear to ear "The comments are awful!"

Malakai raised a curious brow at her and she shifted closer, shoving the screen of the phone up to his face. "Look at this one. She said, ’He’s mad he dumped her and she found a better him. Malakai Basti is richer isn’t he?"

"That strokes my ego," Malakai mumbled.

She chuckled and slowly took a deep breath. "What did you do to make this happen?"

"I bought them." He shrugged.

"You shouldn’t have done that," she said to him. "The point of all these was to get out of this mess without wasting a dime on Patro."

Malakai cocked a brow at her. "It wasn’t going to work."

"Malakai—"

"Eve, you are playing a game with a man whose family bounces in wealth. What makes you think that you could win without money? Money is power, like it or not, and to win against a man like him, you need one. That is why you needed me in the first place. The influence, the wealth, it would be near impossible to win against Patro without one. Maybe even impossible. Let’s be a bit realistic here."

He rested his elbows on his thighs and leaned in close enough to her. "Do you know what would have happened if I hadn’t done what I’d done?"

He didn’t let her answer, saying, "Patro and his father, Zekial Zolotov would have had every publishing company under their palms by now and none of those recordings or the truth would have made it to the public. Nothing would have changed. You think they would choose you over a man who funds them? No, my doll, they don’t care about you. All that matters to them is money and I gave them what they wanted to get you what you want."

Her pretty long lashes which cast a shadow behind her glasses fluttered rapidly. "Thank...you."

Malakai’s hand reached out and held her face close enough that his hot breath fanned her skin.

"I’ll remind you again, I have more wealth than I care about. And you are my wife ," he said, stroking her nose with his thumb. "Mine. So use it like it’s yours. Use me to the fullest, Eve, because I will use you too to get what I want."

Eve felt herself collapsing under his intense gaze, her throat bobbing in a swallow. She couldn’t look away from him, and the only thing that snapped her back to reality was the sound of a notification coming into her phone.

She rapidly rose to her feet, clearing her throat and turning her back on him.

She scrolled into her messages and the new messages were from an unknown number, which had her face screwed into a frown.

"What’s wrong?" Malakai asked.

Eve didn’t respond, but instead opened the messages, only for her heart to drop heavily in her stomach. Her blood rushed with every word she read as well as the pictures sent, and pinpricks danced along her forearms, to her fingers wrapped around the phone.

Slowly she turned towards Malakai who regarded her with a curious gaze and the phone dropped out of her hold.

"M-my...my father."
