Chapter 32: Mr. Basti

Malakai wrapped his hair into a low man bun and picked up his briefcase . He walked to the door to leave but was stopped by Eve, who pulled at the back of his knee-length coat.

He turned around. "Eve?"

Eve cleared her throat and outstretched her hand to him. The man lowered his gaze to what she held. A piece of paper.

"What’s this?" He collected it.

"I want you to buy those for me."

He read through them and looked at her. "Okay, Yuri will—"

"No!" She shook her. "I want you...to-to buy them for me. They’re...stuff for me."

"And you don’t have to do it now," she added. "You can just buy them when you’re coming home from work."

Malakai stared at her, and unprompted, his lips curled into a smile. He didn’t give a response but kept his phone aside and plucked his cell phone out of his pocket.

"Wait for me," he mouthed to her and left the room to beeline for the elevator

The sound of the car drew her to the balcony and she glanced down to find him driving out.

[Mr. Basti, you won’t be able to make it to work today? What about your meeting about the project]

"It is not that I’m not coming," Malakai responded to the person on the other side of the phone. "I’ll be late. That’s it. I have something to take care of, so extend the time of the meeting."

[Alright, sir]

Malakai shoved the phone into the pocket of his coat and turned the steering wheel to park the car by the side. He stepped down and lifted his gaze to the building.

It was a pharmaceutical store, mainly catering to pregnant omegas.

Pushing the door open, he stepped inside and glanced around before his gaze landed at the receptionist’s desk.

The receptionist bowed as soon as he approached, her eyes staying stuck on him. She wouldn’t look away from him and Malakai had to cock a brow, confused.

He slapped the piece of paper on the desk. "I need everything on the list."

"O-of course." The omega nodded and stepped out from behind the desk. This was definitely Mr. Basti. There was not a single person who would look at him and not recognize him.

What was he doing at the store? Was his wife pregnant? The one who’d been Patro Zolotov’s mate once?

"I would really recommend this type of blanket, Mr. Basti. They are very soft and even heated. We’re in the rainy season, so I think your wife will be pleased with them," she suggested.

Malakai examined the product and took out his phone, snapping a photo. He texted Eve, {They recommended it. It’s soft and heated. Do you want it?}

[Yes!]

{How many?}

[Eh..one? Unless you want one too]

He blinked at the message and the kind of amusement he couldn’t hold back emerged on his face, his lips curling slightly.

The omega rapidly batted her lashes at him. Mr. Basti could smile? This man had never been caught smiling, not even for the media. And he was really here...for his wife?

In her four years of working here, she had never seen an alpha come here himself for their mate. The omegas always came themselves, so Malakai was the first she had ever seen, which had her taken aback.

He was quiet literally the only alpha within that building at that very moment.

"Why are you staring at me?" He cocked a questioning brow at her, a frown on his face.

That snapped the omega out of her thoughts and she quickly shook her head at him. "My apologies. Um, let me get the rest of the list."

A few minutes later, Malakai returned to the cashier’s desk with the receptionist and took out his card to pay.

"Isn’t that Mr. Basti?"

He didn’t pay attention to the omegas murmuring behind him.

"Do you think she’s...pregnant?"

"Who..."

The omega behind him, grabbed her friend, pulling her closer to whisper into her ear. "That woman. I think her name is Eve. The one that was once married to Patro Zolotov, have you forgotten?"

"Oh..." the friend gasped.

Malakai received his card back from the cashier and while the items were packed for him, he took his phone out, browsing into it. But then he paused.

A video of Patro was circulating—specifically a conference he’d held and it had to do with Eve.

He played the video.

[None of those recordings that had been released a week ago is true. I was set up by Eve Basti. This is her way of getting back at me for making statements about her actions. Cheating on me with Malakai Basti and getting married to him. If any of my words are a lie, I’d like Eve to step out and make a public confrontation and address this. If she can’t, then...] Patro shrugged, a smile tugging at his lips.

He stared directly into the camera as if he knew Eve and Malakai were watching.

Malakai’s eyes blackened completely for a second and in pure suppressed anger, he crushed the phone with his mere grip.

The omega’s face paled, and she took a step back.

"S-sir, I-I’ve packed your items," she stuttered. Her entire frame was trembling.

Malakai stared down at her shorter frame and the black of his eyes vanished and returned to their original golden colour. He left the store and the very second he walked through the glass door, the omega breathed out.

She’d been suffocating like she couldn’t breathe. The potency of his pheromones, it was harsh, enough that it just might be able to kill. How could that even be possible? She had never met an alpha with such pheromones that could kill.

Breathing out, she lifted her head to find the other omegas within the store, as pale as white as if they’d seen a ghost.

"It’s alright. Everything is alright. There is nothing to worry about. Please step up so I can attend to you."
