Chapter 37: His Heart

Eve and Malakai watched as two figures walked out from the shadow, the gun each of them held pointed at the both of them.

These two were the additional presence he’d felt. His brow shot up and he cackled.

"What’s funny, Malakai?" Patro questioned, eyes narrowed dangerously.

Malakai grabbed him by the chin with the hand he had wrapped around his throat and tipped his head back to have him look at him.

Patro swallowed.

"What do you think you’re doing?"

The man’s eyes stretched along with a malicious smile and the tip of his claws dug into the skin of his jaw, drawing blood. "I thought you were clever, Patro. But you can be rather stupid sometimes. Overestimating yourself like an idiot."

"Meaning what?"

Malakai forcefully lowered his head and made him look at his two men. Behind each of the men were Caius and Yuri, their own pistols aimed.

He said, "These two will have two of your men dead in less than two seconds. What will you do? Do you think you can kill me before I kill you?" he asked. "Eve will kill your woman before she attempts to pull that trigger. And you? Who will you choose to kill first? Me or Eve? Do you think I’ll let you kill Eve before lodging a bullet into your head or slitting your throat?"

"Tell me, Patro," he whispered to him. "The choice is all yours. Let my wife go and we’ll settle this deal like it should have been done in the first place. If you decide otherwise, we’ll have to see who walks out here alive and who doesn’t. Would you like to gamble?"

Patro’s lashes flickered and he slowly breathed out, a frustrated smile emerging on his lips.

"This is exactly why I don’t like you, Malakai. You irritate me," he muttered under his breath as he took the pistol off Eve.

He glanced at both of his men. "Put your gun down. Now."

"Yes, boss." They obeyed.

Eve put hers down and so did Herla. Caius and Yuri weren’t an exception.

Malakai stepped away from Patro and stuffed his pistol into the pocket of his coat.

"My father?" Eve demanded.

"Bring her father out," Patro ordered.

Both men glanced at each other in confusion. This was not the initial plan. They were never going to give the old man back, at least that was what Patro’s father had ordered.

"Are you deaf?"

Patro questioned, sending chills running down their spine. They rapidly shook their heads and hurried off.

Everyone waited in silence, but he couldn’t keep his eyes off Eve. She seemed to have added a bit of weight since she’d last been with him.

His eyes followed her hair, poured all the way to her bottom and diverted back to her face.

No glasses... How could she see properly then? Contacts? 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

That amused him.

He’d always hated how beautiful she’d always looked with or without them. Eve was beautiful even at her worst look and Herla didn’t hold even half a candle to her.

He watched her bite into her bottom lip, pillowy and red, clearly nervous to see her father.

Her face turned and she almost crossed eyes with him, but he was quick to look away, gaze landing on Malakai who was staring directly at him.

As if the man knew what he was thinking, he grinned at him as if he took him for a fool, and that for some reason triggered Patro.

"All mine," Malakai mouthed silently at him, lips curled in pure amusement.

Patro shook on his spot. His jaw clenched and so did his hands that were by his side. He’d checked and his mating mark on Eve was gone. Malakai was going to mark her, it was in his eyes as if to say ’She’s no longer yours. But mine now’

He nearly turned red from the rage burning inside of him, but then, the sounds of shuffling footsteps shifted his attention to find his men dragging out a man who could barely walk on his own feet.

Eve’s father.

"Dad!" Eve rushed over, grabbing the middle-aged man who’d been released, before he could hit the floor. "Dad. Dad, are you okay?"

"Eve?" His voice was rough. Husky and screaming thirst.

He lifted his slumped head to look at his daughter. She had dark brown hair similar to him, and even her eyes were just the exact shade of hazel as his. Beautifully amber. She was his copy and paste, so much so that no one would even doubt for a second that he was her father.

"Dad..." Eve had already begun sobbing on her knees, pulling her father into a tight hug. He looked so weak, so tired and there wasn’t even the usual spark in his eyes anymore.

"What a beautiful reunion." Patro chuckled. "Almost has me near tears."

Malakai paid his words no heed, but instead walked over to Eve. "We’ve got to go, doll."

She looked at him and nodded her head. "Right right. I need to get my father to the hospital. He seems to be out of it."

He helped her to her feet and they proceeded to each hold her father by his arms and began walking him out of the building. They had made it to the door and just before they could step out, the heavy sound of a gunshot resounded, startling Eve whose heart almost leaped out of her chest.

She quickly turned her head, thinking it was Malakai or Caius who had been shot. But standing behind them was Yuri, with his arms spread out as if he was shielding them. The shot had been directed at Malakai and Yuri being the half vampire he was, had arrived behind them in the blink of an eye, taking the bullet instead.

"Yuri..." Caius mumbled. "YURI!!"

Yuri slowly lowered his gaze to his chest. He was bleeding profusely. While he was half a vampire giving him the advantage to heal quickly from wounds, this one was different. Had he been shot in his stomach, he would have no reason to panic, but his chest? At his heart?
