Chapter 1229: A Thread of Life and Death

Under the watchful eyes of everyone, Lou Qianzhong strode to the edge of the Bridge of Life and Death. He turned briefly to glance at the crowd and snorted. "What are you all waiting for? Step onto the bridge already. The mist will clear within an hour, you won't get across at all if you hesitate any longer."

Without another word, he stepped onto the bridge, but immediately stumbled, nearly falling flat on his face.

"Damn it! This is unreal, this old man can't handle it!"

Lou Qianzhong cursed, his eyes wide with shock. Once he stepped onto the bridge, flying was out of the question, and even walking became extremely difficult. He appeared calm, but only he could feel the intense pressure on his feet, so great that his legs trembled with each step.

His pace slowed dramatically, each step heavy and hesitant, as if he were an old man struggling to walk. Ten meters took him a full twenty breaths to cover!

Meanwhile, Lin Mu had already reached the opposite side. He leaned leisurely against the bridge's railing, watching Lou Qianzhong approach, and waved a hand with a smirk. "Hey, Lord Lou, why the slow pace? Didn't you have breakfast?"

Lou Qianzhong snorted, irritation flickering in his chest. He knew better than to speak rudely, Lin Mu's status demanded caution. With a careful step, he pressed onward.

After what seemed like an eternity, Lou Qianzhong finally made it across. He collapsed onto the ground, gasping for breath.

Many cultivators watching the scene felt a pang of doubt for their own chances.

If even someone of Lou Qianzhong's skill struggled to cross the bridge, what hope did ordinary practitioners have?

Lin Mu grinned and addressed the crowd. "Hey, Leader Fang, I can bring at most two more of you across, but the rest won't make it. There's simply not enough time."

Lin Mu returned to the near side of the bridge and placed a hand on the shoulder of the Human Emperor who had bowed to him before. "Who else wants to cross?"

Fang Leader pointed to another Human Emperor beside him. "Young Master Lin, take this president with you in addition to me."

"Fine!" Lin Mu nodded and carefully lifted Fang leader, stepping back onto the Bridge of Life and Death.

Carrying someone slowed him noticeably. Although the mist had receded somewhat, the oppressive weight on each person's body was still immense. Not quite a million catty, perhaps, but easily two to three hundred thousand. To carry a person while resisting the Bridge of Life and Death's mental pressure was no trivial matter.

A few other Human Emperor experts began crossing as well. After all, in less than an hour, the mist would roll back in, and by then, crossing the bridge would be impossible.

One Human Emperor, skilled in body refinement, followed closely behind Lin Mu onto the Bridge of Life and Death.

His physical strength was terrifying, but the bridge's mental interference forced him to move cautiously. Step by step, he followed Lin Mu and managed to cross safely.

However, the moment he reached the other side, his legs went weak. On the Bridge of Life and Death, the strain had been so intense that he had felt as if his heart might leap out of his chest.

Watching his struggle, the other cultivators felt despair wash over them.

This Bridge of Life and Death was absolutely not something they could cross.

Soon, a short, plump Human Emperor attempted the crossing. Halfway across, he was overwhelmed by an illusion and leapt from the Bridge of Life and Death. Below him, rivers of molten rock roared. Even a Human Emperor, unprepared, would have been incinerated in an instant.

It seemed that obese Human Emperor would not survive.

The sight of one Human Emperor's death chilled the hearts of many. Attempting the Bridge of Life and Death was clearly no joking matter, with life and death separated by only a single thread.

"Sigh, it seems the opportunity of the Sea of Miracles is not meant for me."

A few King-tier cultivators shook their heads, abandoning hope and left.

Others tried briefly before stepping back, trembling in fear, while the unlucky few who failed to retreat vanished into the lava below.

Two more Human Emperors, using secret arts, managed to cross, but arrived on the far side drenched in sweat, bodies trembling with exhaustion.

Even Lin Mu, returning for a second load, moved slower than before. The leisurely confidence he had shown at first was gone.

Observing the Bridge of Life and Death for a time, Ling Feng concluded that it tested both the body and spiritual consciousness. Satisfied with his understanding, he turned to Tuoba Yan. "Let's go. We should cross now."

Tuoba Yan nodded, pressing her lips together before looping her arm through Ling Feng's.

"Hold on tight," he said, instinctively wrapping his other arm around her waist. Tuoba Yan's cheeks flushed red as she shot him a glance but said nothing.

She knew Ling Feng well enough to trust his intentions, and he wasn't the type to think inappropriately.

Beside them, Lan Yuhuang drew a deep breath and let out a soft sigh. "Forget it. You two go ahead, I'm not crossing!"

Her assessment was clear. Among early-tier Human Emperors, her power was not outstanding. Her mastery of toxic arts offered little advantage here, so retreat was the only sensible choice.

"No problem," Ling Feng said, smiling faintly. He extended his arm and pulled Lan Yuhuang close to his side.

"You!"

Lan Yuhuang's eyes widened. She knew Ling Feng was strong, but taking two people at once was a bold move!

"Don't overthink it, I'm fair. I'll help you cross this bridge, and afterward, there will be no debts between us."

Ling Feng smiled. "Hold on tight. It won't be my responsibility if either of you falls."

"Hmph!"

Lan Yuhuang rolled her eyes and hesitated, then she squared her chest and mumbled, "Who's afraid?"

With that, she wrapped her arms around Ling Feng's waist. Though he had held her before, doing so in public made her flustered.

She pressed herself to him, lowering her head to avoid the gaze of others. Ling Feng felt heat creep up his face and muttered, "You don't need to cling so tightly."

"Mind your own business! Let's cross the bridge!" she whispered, tinged with embarrassment.

Ling Feng shook his head, firming his grip on the two women, and stepped forward onto the bridge.

At that moment, a sudden gust of wind swept from behind. Alert, Ling Feng instinctively shifted the two women aside. A deafening explosion ripped through the spot he had just stood, leaving a deep crater.

Had Ling Feng been unable to avoid that strike, he would surely have perished.
