The Art of Chaotic Divinity-Chapter 1235: Island Survivor
The two spoke no further. They traveled forward along the dense forest bordering the coast. This area was thick and lush, yet it held no sign of demonic beasts or similar creatures. This simply did not match the infamous, dangerous reputation of the Sea of Miracles.
After all, so-called secret realms and ruins are usually crawling with various fierce beasts and monsters. This small island, however, was too quiet. It was so quiet that it bordered on bizarre!
"It looks like this is an uninhabited island."
Breaking off a stalk of grass to chew on, Lin Mu said in a casual tone, "Brother Ling, I think we should just head back."
"Wait!"
Ling Feng's gaze narrowed. He noticed a wooden house at the edge of the dense forest ahead. It was built along a river, and surrounding it was even a small medicinal herb field!
"This place is inhabited!"
Ling Feng stared intently and activated his Boundless Vision. He saw another medicinal herb field behind the wooden house. An old woman with white hair was working the field, swinging a hoe and farming something.
Lin Mu clearly noticed this as well, a hint of surprise appearing in his eyes.
There are living people inside the Sea of Miracles?
Five hundred years ago, the Sea of Miracles was simply a zone within the Inner Sea. While it contained ancient ruins, it was not isolated from the outside world. Perhaps some people, while exploring, had remained in the Sea of Miracles and later settled and multiplied there.
Furthermore, a number of cities, like Jiumu City, were swallowed by the fracturing space and fell into the Sea of Miracles. If those trapped humans survived, then finding inhabitants in the Sea of Miracles was not strange.
Ling Feng and Lin Mu exchanged glances and quickly walked toward the wooden house.
Perhaps they might learn something about the island from this old woman.
As they got closer, the two realized that the old woman was a mere mortal with no cultivation whatsoever. She was withered, her face waxy and yellow, and she appeared very frail.
Because of this, she was completely unaware of Ling Feng and Lin Mu approaching her.
"Auntie..."
Lin Mu walked forward boldly and greeted the old woman. She shrieked, instantly falling backward onto the medicinal herb field. She scrambled desperately away on her hands, utterly overwhelmed by fear. She struggled to her feet and darted into the house, slamming the door shut with a loud crash.
"Ugh..."
Lin Mu touched his handsome face, showing a frustrated expression. "People used to call me a 'maiden killer,' but I never took it seriously. A handsome man of my caliber should clearly be the natural nemesis of every woman alive! Yet, for the older generation, Brother Ling, it seems you're the one who has to be the expert."
Ling Feng's mouth twitched slightly. He shot Lin Mu a wry glance. He looked around and found that the medicinal herb field was not actually growing any high-value herbs. Most of the crops were just common herbs for ordinary people, with large roots and stems suitable for eating.
It seemed the old woman sustained herself by eating the stalks and roots of these herbs.
Some pale, white objects were buried beneath the soil of the medicinal herb field. Ling Feng gave them a passing glance, then walked up to the door. He knocked gently and said, "Old woman, my friend and I mean no harm. We are martial practitioners who were transported here by a teleportation array. We simply hope to ask you about the island."
Silence followed the knock. Ling Feng and Lin Mu waited for a long time. The old woman inside realized the two were not attempting to force entry and sensed they meant no ill will. She cautiously opened the wooden door.
The old woman looked at them, trembling slightly. She slowly said, "You... you aren't really planning to capture me, are you?"
"Capture you? Why would anyone capture you? Are there other people on this island?"
Ling Feng was momentarily stunned. He looked closely and noticed the old woman was hiding a rusty dagger in her sleeve. He shook his head and smiled. If he stood still and let her stab him with that dagger, it probably wouldn't even pierce his skin.
The old woman nervously clenched her fist and took a deep breath. She then said, "You two... come inside first."
As she spoke, Ling Feng distinctly noticed that although the old woman was extremely aged, her teeth were remarkably sharp and jagged, looking entirely unlike human teeth.
Perhaps this was due to her long term diet of hard roots and stems.
"Thanks!"
Lin Mu took big steps into the wooden house. Ling Feng nodded to the old woman and followed. Once inside, he looked around, finding the house incredibly worn out. Aside from a few simple pieces of furniture, the shelves were practically bare.
However, the floor had been kept spotlessly clean.
"Please take a seat."
The old woman relaxed considerably after realizing Ling Feng and the friend had no malicious intent. She hurried to the back, busied herself for a moment, and returned with two cups of hot tea. She gently placed them on the table in front of the two men and said slowly, "This tea is brewed from a unique fruit found on our island. Please enjoy."
"Thank you very much!"
Lin Mu picked up his cup and immediately drained it. Ling Feng pursed his lips, examined the tea briefly, then also picked up his cup, gently took a sip, and smiled. "Thank you for your hospitality."
The old woman remained somewhat vigilant. Staring at the two of them, she asked, "You said you arrived here using a teleportation array?"
"That's right." Ling Feng nodded. "While traveling, my friend and I accidentally entered a valley and activated a teleportation array, which brought us to this island. Could you tell us exactly where this place is?"
Ling Feng chose not to tell the complete truth until he could determine the old woman's identity. After all, the fact that she survived in this location was strange in itself.
"So, it is just the two of you, correct?"
The old woman slowly spoke after seeing Ling Feng's expression did not seem like a lie. "Sigh, your luck is truly terrible, to have been sent to this cursed place."
"Cursed place?"
Ling Feng feigned surprise. "I think the scenery here is quite nice. Plus, there doesn't seem to be any danger. How could it be a cursed place?"
Lin Mu also nodded, saying with exaggerated sincerity, "The mountains are beautiful and the water is clear, and the ocean is not far away. Being backed by mountains and facing the sea, this would be a legendary, very expensive, sea-view property outside!"
The old woman sighed softly, then continued, "The two young masters do not understand. My name is Ma Chunhua. I was originally from Heavenly Pool Island. During a period of turmoil on Heavenly Pool Island, I escaped, drifting on a small boat until I arrived here. I have been living on this island for about ten years."
