The Beast Tamer's Awakening: Amaya and the White Tiger King-Chapter 12: THE LUNAR SANCTUARY
Leo moved through the forest in silent, every step swift and deliberate, every muscle wound tight with urgency. Amaya lay cradled in his arms, her body trembling from the backlash of her uncontrolled power. Her breathing was shallow, uneven, and every time her eyes flickered, panic clawed at his chest.
He had felt her power earlier—felt it explode across the clearing like a divine command—and even now, traces of it clung to her skin like shimmering dust. It frightened him. Not because she was dangerous. But because her body wasn’t ready for it.
Because she could burn herself out from the inside.
And he had almost watched her do exactly that.
"leo..." Her voice was barely a whisper.
He tightened his hold. "I’m here."
"I can’t... breathe right."
"It will settle soon," he murmured, though the truth twisted inside him. The backlash was worse than he’d expected. Worse than any awakened tamer had experienced in centuries. "We’re almost there."
The forest deepened around them, and Amaya felt the atmosphere change. The air grew cooler, humming with something soft and ancient. A faint blue glow seeped between the trees like strands of moonlight woven through the leaves.
"What is this place...?" she whispered, her head leaning weakly against his chest.
Leo’s voice softened. "Sacred ground. The Lunar Sanctuary."
The trees opened into a vast clearing—circular, serene, and lit entirely by floating orbs of pale blue luminescence. Water trickled down smooth stone formations, gathering into a still pool that reflected the sky like glass. Flowers of silver and lavender bloomed along the edges of the water, glowing faintly like starlight caught in petals.
A soft mist curled above the pool’s surface, cool and sweet-smelling.
Amaya blinked, overwhelmed.
"It’s beautiful..."
Leo carried her to the water’s edge and knelt, lowering her gently so her legs dipped into the shimmering pool. The moment her skin touched it, warmth spread through her entire body. Her trembling eased, her breathing steadied, and the frantic overload of her senses faded into a distant whisper.
Amaya gasped. "What is this water...?"
"Moonwell essence," leo answered. "It soothes awakened blood and calms overactive cores."
She blinked slowly. "You brought me straight here..."
"I brought you to the only place that could keep you alive."
His voice shook.
Amaya’s eyes softened. "leo..."
He didn’t look at her.
He couldn’t.
Because he was afraid she would see the truth in his face.
That when her power spiraled out of control—that when she screamed in pain and her markings burned like fire beneath her skin—he had been terrified.
Terrified of losing her.
Terrified of failing her.
Terrified of what she meant to him.
He stood abruptly and dipped a small bowl into the moonwell. "Drink."
She obeyed without argument. Each sip cooled her burning throat and settled her racing heart. The glow around her dimmed to a gentle flicker.
After a long moment, she whispered, "leo... I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t have used that much power."
"You protected us both." He crouched beside her again. "I will never scold you for that."
"But my core—"
"Your core is growing faster than your body can handle," leo said. "You are pulling on power far older and deeper than anything mortal tamers were meant to control."
She looked down at her reflection in the glowing pool.
Her eyes—her once-dark brown eyes—had faint lines of gold swirling through them now, like tiny constellations trapped in her irises.
"...What’s happening to me?"
Leo hesitated.
Then he said the thing he’d been dreading.
"The Sovereign’s blood is awakening."
Her heart stopped.
"My... what?"
Leo sat beside her, his tail coiling loosely around her leg—not holding her, just anchoring himself close. "The Beast Sovereign wasn’t just a ruler. She was the origin of all Beastlords. Her bloodline passed through only a few chosen descendants... and you are one of them."
Amaya stared at him, her lips parting in disbelief. "I can’t be. I’m— I’m human."
"You are half human," leo said gently. "But your other half is not."
"My mother..." she whispered.
"Was more than she let you see." 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
The pool glimmered softly beneath them.
Amaya swallowed hard. "You knew I was the heir this whole time, didn’t you?"
Leo stiffened. "I—suspected. And I feared I was right."
"Feared?" she echoed.
He looked away.
"For your sake," he said quietly. "Because the Sovereign’s heir is never safe. Never unnoticed. Never free."
A silence settled between them—fragile, aching.
Then Amaya whispered, "leo... about earlier..."
She watched his shoulders tense.
"You kissed me."
His ears twitched.
His tail froze.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then—
"I did."
Her cheeks warmed. "Was it... because of instinct? Or because—"
"Because I thought you were gone," he said, voice raw. "Because when your heart stopped for those seconds... I lost myself."
Amaya’s breath hitched.
Leo leaned in, his forehead brushing hers again—soft, tender, trembling.
"And because I wanted to," he whispered.
Her pulse soared.
"leo..."
He pulled back before he lost control again and stood quickly. "The Sanctuary is safe. Rest while you can."
Before she could reply, a cold breeze swept through the clearing.
Leo froze.
His eyes sharpened.
Something was wrong.
The glow of the Moonwell flickered.
The silver flowers by the water’s edge began to wilt.
Amaya felt a chill crawl up her spine. "leo...?"
He unsheathed his claws. "Stay by the water."
A whisper rippled across the air—soft and poisonous.
"You hide her well, White Tiger King."
Leo’s tail bristled.
Amaya’s stomach dropped. She recognized that voice.
"That’s her," she breathed. "The Shadow Priestess."
The air rippled.
And a figure materialized from the darkness at the edge of the clearing.
She was tall, draped in living shadows that curled around her like smoke. Her hair was long and black as midnight, and her eyes—pale purple—glowed like dying embers of a cursed star.
Death followed her like a trailing veil.
The Shadow Priestess smiled faintly when her gaze met Amaya’s.
"So the little heir survived the awakening. Interesting."
Leo stepped in front of Amaya instantly. "You will not touch her."
The Priestess tilted her head. "Oh, leo. Fierce as always. Loyal as always." She smirked. "And just as blind."
Her fingers curled, and the air darkened.
"Do you even know what she truly is?"
Leo snarled. "I know enough."
"You know nothing." Her voice dropped to a silky whisper. "She is not just the heir. She is the key to unlocking the Sovereign’s seal."
Leo’s heart lurched.
Amaya froze.
"The... seal?" she whispered.
"Oh yes." The Priestess’s smile widened into something wicked. "The Sovereign bound her core before she died. Locked away power capable of reshaping the Beastworld."
She raised her hand and shadows pooled in her palm.
"And only her living blood can break it."
Leo grabbed Amaya’s hand tightly.
"Do not listen to her," he growled.
But Amaya’s mind was spinning.
"I—break the seal?"
"Yes," the Priestess purred. "And I will use you to open it."
She flicked her wrist.
Shadows shot forward, streaking toward them.
Leo roared and slashed through the darkness, the impact shaking the whole clearing.
The Moonwell rippled violently.
"leo!" Amaya cried.
He shoved her back. "Stay behind me!"
The Priestess laughed softly.
"You cannot protect her forever."
Leo lunged—and the Priestess dissolved into shadows.
Reappeared behind Amaya.
Too fast.
Too close.
Her hand reached out—
"NO!"
A blast of light erupted from Amaya’s chest, throwing the Priestess backward.
She hit a tree with a crack and hissed, eyes narrowing as she stood slowly.
"Well," she breathed, brushing dust from her robes. "The heir has teeth."
Leo stepped in front of Amaya again, panting.
His arm bled where shadow magic had grazed it.
Amaya grabbed him. "You’re hurt—"
His pulse jumped at her touch. "It’s nothing. Stay close."
"I won’t let her take you," Amaya whispered fiercely.
Leo’s eyes widened—not at her words, but at her expression.
Fire.
Resolve.
Instinct.
She stood glimmering under the moonlight, runes awakening faintly across her skin.
She looked like a queen.
The Priestess flicked two fingers.
Shadow beasts erupted from the ground—wolf-shaped creatures with hollow eyes and dripping fangs.
Leo moved instantly. "Amaya—behind me!"
"No," she whispered, stepping forward. "Not this time."
Her markings ignited.
Gold.
White.
Starlit.
Light burst from her palms like twin comet-tails.
She slashed downward—
And three shadow beasts evaporated instantly, howling as they dissolved into smoke.
Leo stared.
The Priestess smiled slowly. "Oh, yes. You are waking beautifully."
Amaya lifted her chin.
"Leave us," she commanded.
The Priestess’s eyes gleamed with amusement. "Make me."
Amaya’s veins glowed.
Her hair lifted.
Her voice became a soft ripple of command threaded with power older than the world.
"I said—"
Her power flared.
"LEAVE."
The air cracked like lightning.
The Priestess staggered as the shockwave hit her full-force, hurling her several meters back. Trees splintered. Shadows screamed. Even the sky above the Sanctuary flickered.
A long silence followed.
When the dust settled, the Priestess appeared again—this time at a safe distance, brushing her robes off with an annoyed sigh.
"My, my. Such force for someone barely awakened."
Her eyes narrowed.
"But uncontrolled power burns its wielder from the inside out. Remember that, little heir."
She bowed mockingly.
"I’ll return for you."
And then she dissolved into a swirl of black smoke and vanished.
---
SILENCE.
Amaya swayed on her feet.
Leo caught her instantly. "Easy—easy."
Her vision blurred. "Did we... win?"
"For now." leo lifted her off the ground. "But she will be back."
She clung to him, her voice trembling. "leo... she wants to use me to break the seal."
"I won’t let her," he growled.
"What if she finds another way? What if I can’t control—"
He pressed his forehead to hers, voice fierce and shaking.
"You are not alone. You will never be alone. I swear it."
Her breath trembled.
His hands cupped her face gently. "You need rest. Tomorrow, I begin training you myself."
"To control my power?" she whispered.
"To survive," leo answered. "And to claim what’s yours."
Her heart hammered.
"And leo...?" she whispered.
"Yes?"
"You stayed by my side."
He swallowed hard. "Always."
She closed her eyes and leaned into him.
The moonlight rippled softly across the water.
And in that sacred quiet, leo whispered the words he’d been terrified to say—
"Amaya... I’m not protecting you because you’re the heir."
His voice broke.
"I’m protecting you because I can’t imagine a world without you in it."
Her breath hitched—
But sleep took her before she could answer.
Leo held her against his chest, his tail curling protectively around her, his eyes burning with quiet devotion.
And as the night deepened...
Far away, the Shadow Priestess watched through a veil of smoke.
"She grows faster than expected," she whispered.
Her smile was slow and sharp.
"Good."
Because she finally understood—
The heir’s power wasn’t just awakening.
It was evolving.
And the Beastworld was not ready.
