Chapter 36: The Black-knight 1

Malaki’s tone thick with triumph...."Did you truly think a mere blade could harm a being from the Outer Dark?....

"This, Samuel, is a Black Knight! A true being of destruction, born of the void between realms! And it answers only to me, thanks to the celestial navigator’s blood...for opening the portal." He punctuated his chilling declaration with a bloodied finger, jabbing it first towards the crumpled Lira, then towards Yvaine’s older sister, both lying still and vulnerable.

Lira remained motionless, a blood thread still trickling from the corner of her mouth, a stark testament to the brutality she’d endured in the hands of the path-knight... Yvaine’s eyelids fluttered, slowly, agonizing rise. Her vision swam, blurred and indistinct, before opening, the obsidian silhouette of the Black Knight attracted her focus.

It stood fifteen feet tall, an embodiment of pure, unadulterated darkness, directly in front of Samuel. Her head lolled to the left, and she saw Malaki, still laughing, still speaking to Samuel. The words, however, were lost to her, a muffled jumble swallowed by the ringing in her eardrums, a lingering aftereffect of the brutal assault by the path-knight.

What...Malaki didn’t know in his arrogance, that Yvaine’s staff...could be summoned back to her, even from across realms. With a defiant surge of her dwindling strength and remaining essence, a spark ignited within her. Her hands trembled, but her will was still as strong as iron.

A faint hum vibrated in the atmosphere, growing louder, more resonant, until with a burst of bright light, her staff materialized in her hands. The warmth of it, the familiar weight, was a small desperate comfort. She clutched it, her knuckles bloody, and she began to chant, the ancient words flowing from her lips a whispered prayer. For a few agonizing seconds, the staff pulsed with a soft, glow, then erupted into a brilliant, blinding yellow light. Without hesitation, she swung it, unleashing a potent blast of concentrated essence. The yellow beam of light struck Malaki squarely in the side of his back, catching him completely off guard. He cried out, an intense sound of shock and pain, as the force of the impact lifted him clean off his feet, sending him hurtling across the edge of the chamber, a rag doll tossed by a blast of an energy beam...a cloud of dust rising around him.

Samuel’s eyes...widened with disbelief and a flicker of hope, had tracked Malaki’s ignominious flight. But his gaze quickly snapped back to the colossal Black Knight. The creature hadn’t moved an inch, hadn’t even flinched, during Yvaine’s attack. This was it. This was the opening. He didn’t hesitate, didn’t waste a precious second. With a burst of speed that blurred his form, he shot forward, a dark green streak, towards the prone figures of Lira, Yvaine, and her older sister. In one fluid motion, he scooped all three onto his body, their combined weight...weighed a crushing burden that threatened to buckle his knees. The sheer overload was too much, even for him. He needed assistance, and fast.

"Art of War," he called, his voice strained. Dark green energy...burst forth from his blade, swirling around it like a river. "Aegirion!" he commanded, his voice imbued with urgency.

"Please, take them out of this city!" The atmosphere shimmered, distorting, and from the swirling energy, a massive, nine-foot-tall knight, forged of dark green light, solidified. A manifestation of Samuel’s blade. "Go!" Samuel added, his voice filled with desperation. Without a word, the formed dark green knight..."Aegirion." Samuel Blade carefully gathered the three unconscious and injured girls. With a thunderous roar, it launched itself upward, bursting through the ceiling of the underground chamber, and leaving a gaping hole in the roof. It soared into the sky, carrying Lira Yvaine and her older sister... It didn’t stop until it landed gently on a high uphill overlooking the vast expanse of the Blue-Crest Kingdom, a safe, if not temporary, haven.

The moment Aegirion cleared the chamber, carrying Samuel’s friends to safety, Samuel spun around. His chest beating faster...

Then a ragged cough tore through the silence. Then another, deeper one, bringing with it the bitter taste of blood.

Malaki, now on his feet, his form twisted from the injuries of the blast...screamed at the still-motionless Black Knight. "Kill him! Kill every one of them!"

The Black Knight responded with chilling immediacy. Its head snapped up, and its gaze, though unseen behind its helmet, felt like a physical blow. In an instant, it summoned its massive blade, a grotesque slab of obsidian that seemed to absorb all light...

Samuel had barely drawn a breath when the blade, moved with a horrifying speed and power... It wasn’t a slice, but a brutal, concussive slap. Samuel was launched backward, a human projectile, bursting through the crumbling remains of the palace wall. He became a destructive force himself, rolling end over end, demolishing buildings in his way, a trail of debris and shattered stone marking his path. Finally, he came to a grinding halt in the very heart of the kingdom, outside the palace walls...

Just one hit. One singular blow from the Black Knight had done it. His body screamed in protest. His organs, usually resilient, were severely damaged. Blood, hot and metallic, surged into his mouth, and he coughed, a gush of dark crimson blood splattering onto the shattered stones. Instantly, his innate regeneration kicked in, a frantic hum beneath his skin, working desperately to heal the torn tissues and mend shattered internal structures. a visible sign of the immense physical injuries he’d sustained.

Still struggling to rise, his vision blurring from the pain and blood... the clouds above the kingdom began to blacken, A deep rumble vibrated through the land...an earthquake. Then, a new sound, a monstrous roar, emanated from the road leading to the palace. Through narrowed his pain-filled eyes, Samuel saw it. A massive blade, the size of a school bus, was hurtling towards him at incredible speed. It moved with such velocity that in mere seconds, it was directly in front of him, casting a terrifyingly massive shadow.

Boom!

The impact was deafening. Samuel looked down at his chest, his gaze clouded with disbelief, to see the massive blade impaling him, pinning him to the ground. Blood flowed freely from the gaping wounds. His body’s regeneration, usually so swift and reliable, struggled. The sheer mass and unnatural properties of the blade were somehow hindering the progress, stifling the healing process.

"A-a-a-a-ah!" Samuel shouted in pain... a cry of agony, as he desperately tried to push the blade out. Slowly and excruciatingly, he began to dislodge it. But as the blade began to lift, the Black Knight launched itself forward, matching the blade’s movement, and Samuel slammed backward again, driven into a nearby building and the impact Shook the foundations...

Samuel lay amidst the scattered stones and rods, breathing heavily, each breath a painful one. He grits his teeth, the taste of iron thick in his mouth. "Aegirion!" he shouted, his voice in pain...He bit down hard on his upper lip, drawing more blood, and then with a surge of agonizing will, he pushed the monstrous blade clear from his guts. Blood... some of his internal organs leaked out...staining the debris beneath him. Then his heal factor kicks in...

The Black Knight, a dark, ominous silhouette form, walked slowly towards him, its movements deliberate and menacing. Samuel’s regeneration worked tirelessly, but it wasn’t fast enough. The Black Knight was gaining on him, each step a prelude to his demise...

Samuel, driven by desperation, unleashed his ultimate cry... "Cry of a God!" his jaw dislocated from the sheer force of the sound. A super-sonic shockwave of pure sound erupted from his mouth, a devastating wave of kinetic energy. It slammed into the Black Knight, forcing the colossal creature to recoil. It instinctively recalled its massive blade, plunging it into the ground, adopting a defensive stance, and hunkering down against the invisible force. The shockwaves continued to expand, obliterating the buildings around Samuel, reducing them to dust and rubble, a testament to the sheer power he could unleash.

Then, a sudden movement. One of the villagers, who had not evacuated, perhaps too frightened or too slow, stumbled out of the wreckage, disoriented, and started running. The Black Knight, its defensive stance momentarily broken, reacted with brutal efficiency. It turned its massive blade into a blur and sliced the villager in half. Blood splattered, a gruesome dark red blood sprayed against the black knight’s armor.

Samuel’s eyes widened, in horror replacing the pain in his gaze. But then, a grim realization dawned. The villager’s tragic death had been a distraction, a brief one And it had been enough. His chest wound, previously stubbornly resistant to healing, finally, miraculously, sealed itself. Regeneration, given that crucial moment of reprieve, had completed its work.

"Hand of War!" Samuel shouted, activating another of his potent abilities. A surge of unseen force erupted from him, pressing down on the Black Knight, forcing the colossal creature to its knees, its metallic form groaning under immense pressure. Samuel seized the fleeting advantage. He ran, gathering all the momentum he could in his legs, a human missile. He launched himself, delivering a powerful kick directly at the Black Knight. The blow landed with a sickening sound, but it only pushed the black knight back a mere six feet. Not enough...

But then, a familiar sound. Boom! in the atmosphere. A welcome sight.

"Aegirion!"

A deep, voice echoed from the sky. "Activate... Art of War!" Samuel shouted, his gaze fixed upwards. Mid-air, his transformed blade, the essence of Aegirion, solidified into its original form...the majestic dark green knight again. As it descended, Aegirion summoned its own colossal blade, a mirror image of the Black Knight’s but radiating a vibrant dark green energy. With a powerful swing, Aegirion’s blade connected, shearing off a piece of the Black Knight’s helmet. The Black Knight let out a guttural roar, a sound of pure, unadulterated rage...

Samuel swallowed, his throat suddenly felt dry. He watched a grim determination set in, as a timer of the power "Art of war...." began counting down. "5mins...He had to make every second count.

"Aegirion," Samuel uttered, his voice firm and resolute. "Listen. We are going to attack at the same time. Do you understand?"

"Yes," Aegirion replied, in a low tone.

Samuel knew he was now effectively without a physical blade, as it had transformed into the nine-foot-tall knight, which is far more helpful...assisting in this dire situation. So, he channeled every ounce of his remaining essence into his hands and legs, preparing for a close-quarters assault.

Then, he activated "Periodic Poltergeist," his form invisible, then vanishing from sight.

"Aegirion, Attack!" Samuel shouted, his voice now disembodied.

Aegirion, its massive blade arcing, clashed with the Black Knight in a deafening roar of metal on metal... While the two titans knights were locked in a ferocious struggle, Samuel, now invisible, landed a series of precise, powerful kicks on the Black Knight, targeting its unarmored joints and vulnerable points. Right, left, up, sideways...the blows landed with a powerful force. The shockwaves of their focused combat created deep spiderwebs in the ground beneath them, shattering the already broken landscape.

From the shadows, Samuel used "Hand of War" to exert an unseen pull, wrenching the massive blade from the Black Knight’s hands. This gave Aegirion a crucial opening to strike. But the Black Knight, despite its momentary loss of weapon, was still a being of raw destruction and force. It quickly blocked Aegirion’s incoming strike with its armored forearms, then proceeded to retaliate with its monstrous fists, pounding Aegirion in its knight form with terrifying power.

Samuel had no choice but to interfere directly. He materialized, stepping between the clashing knights... meeting the Black Knight’s colossal fist with his own. His bones shattered in the protest, cracking under the immense force. His muscles tore, protesting the impossible strain. The sheer power of the blow sent a jolt of agonizing pain through his entire body.

Samuel shouted, a sound of pain and defiance, as their fists continued to clash, blow after bone-shattering blow. The wind whipped around them like a tornado, a storm of displaced air from the sheer force of their impacts. For every devastating hit he took, Samuel’s hand was damaged, but in the heat of the moment, his regeneration worked instantly, knitting the torn flesh and mending the shattered bone, preparing him for the next punishing strike.

"Ahhh!" Samuel cried out in intense pain....unadulterated pain mixed with his fierce determination...

Then Samuel thought about something...
