Chapter 18: Prince charming to the rescue part 2

Maya chuckled, "Don’t be nice, I look terrible be honest." She fidgeted with a button on Dalton’s coat she is wearing.

"I saw you when you walked in. You look beautiful ; even with all the bruises, you still look beautiful.." he earnestly said.

Maya’s lips parted as her heart thumped. She didn’t know what to say to him for complimenting her. The silence between them fueled her nervous shyness.

"Wait for me, I will be right back," Dalton suddenly said. Maya didn’t get the chance to respond as he dashed out of the car.

Maya rested her head on the dashboard and got lost in her thoughts.

Why couldn’t she say something back?

Something like. ’You are dashingly handsome too.’ Chat with him like a confident, eloquent woman will do. But here she was acting like a shy teenager.

This is her third encounter with him and she still can’t help but act nervous.

He makes her feel nervous.

Maya felt a tap on her arm. She lifts her head to see Dalton back in his seat.

"I brought you something to eat, your stomach was rumbling."

Maya touched her stomach to rarify, and indeed, her stomach was making rambling noises. She doesn’t feel the hunger at all. She doesn’t remember the last time she ate. She has been so traumatized by what happened that she hasn’t noticed she hasn’t eaten.

"It’s chicken. I got it from the buffet table," he hands over the chicken wrapped in layers of tissues to Maya.

Maya unwrapped the chicken and took a bite. The chef in her quickly started to notice little faults. It wasn’t well-seasoned, but it was eatable.

She kept stealing glances at him whilst she ate. His face is blank most of the time with no emotion on display. Like a statuesque, beautiful but stone-cold. She wishes she could see the contour of his face when he smiles or laughs. Even when he is sad or angry.

Not wanting the silence between them to stretch any longer, Maya decided to break the ice and stop being mute and nervous around him.

"Thanks for the chicken; I didn’t realize I was hungry until you pointed that out," she said with a smile.

Dalton only curt her a nod.

Maya frowned; she realized Dalton didn’t like talking that much. Only speaks when necessary.

Okay, then she will do the talking for both of them. She is not eloquent but she can be able to hold a conversation.

"What are you doing here? I don’t think parties are your scene at all." Maya asked with sheer curiosity.

"Correct," he affirmed. "I’m here because I have business dealings with a business acquaintance who invited me to the party. He is the host of the party."

Maya paused. What if the host of the party is Terrence’s boss? the potbelly man who tried to have sex with her and she... Did she kill him?

"Does the owner of the owns a tech company?" she inquired.

"Yes, " Dalton confirms. "Why are you asking?"

"Well... I might have killed him," Maya grits.

Dalton furrows a brow. "I see."

"He tried to sleep with me, and I hit him with a lamp to get away," she confesses.

"I didn’t check if he is dead or alive." She didn’t care at first because all she could think of was escaping. Now she was scared she might have killed a man.

"Lemme go check," Dalton got out of the car. Maya watched anxiously as he vanished into the Mansion.

Maya patiently waited for him. She glanced around looking for any signs of an ambulance approaching the mansion.

The more time goes by, the more afraid she becomes.

20 minutes later he was back.

"He is dead?" Maya didn’t wait for him to settle down before she reeled him with this question.

"No," Dalton confirms.

Maya let out a long sigh of relief. "Thank God!"

"And don’t worry, I made sure he is not pressing charges or try to harm you. No one wants to cross the company Eater." Dalton smugly said.

Maya blinked rapidly. "For real? Are you a Mafia boss or something," she looked at him with her mouth agape.

Dalton’s lips curved at the edges.

Maya smiled at the little expression he did with his lips. He is not made of stone after all, he is very human

Maya was about to reel him with another question when he spoke.

"You are Hathaway’s daughter?"

"Yes," Maya said with dejection.

"I found out recently from the women that were gossiping about you. They were not discreet. I overheard them."

"Oh I see," Maya sounded bitter. Dalton now knows she is a bastard. Any time she confirms her identity, she feels ashamed. She can’t pretend she is not affected by the fact that she is a product of adultery.

Dalton cleared his throat to get her attention, dragging her mind away from the pitifulness she was wallowing in.

"Your Stepfather was unfaithful to your mother from the very beginning of their marriage. It is a common knowledge among his business acquaintances. One of them told me." He spills out.

"What!" Maya exclaimed. She knew it! She had a feeling her mother had a good reason for cheating on her husband. She did it to get back at something terrible her Stepfather had done. And she was right all along.

"You are the fruit of your mother’s revenge against her unfaithful husband. You shouldn’t feel ashamed about the circumstances that led to your birth."

His words empowered Maya. She felt a heavy weight have been lifted off her heart.

She stared at him like she was starstruck. "You are amazing," she mumbled.

"I heard you,". Dalton said.

Maya hovered her fingers over her mouth as she laughed. "Oops, I said that loud ."

"Thank you. " he did a bow.

Maya laughed. "You are welcome."

She felt so light and warm inside. She hasn’t laughed this hard for a while. Her night was going horrible till he showed up and everything became better.
