Chapter 26: Rivalry

Maya couldn’t believe what was happening at that moment. Dalton was feeding her with the same fork he was using to eat. It felt so intimate. She was freaking out inside but tried to maintain a calm demeanor, as Dalton was acting completely normal about it. But she failed. She blushed throughout.

"Has your stepfather tried to harm you in any way?" Dalton asked after he fed her the last forkful of salad.

They were done eating.

Maya shook her head. "Nope, you scared him really badly," she said, mocking her stepfather.

"Don’t hesitate to let me know if he does, or if anyone else tries to hurt you. "

"Sure," Maya replied as she closed the empty Bento box and placed it back in the insulated food delivery bag. Then she noticed the bottle of wine. "Oops, I forgot I brought wine,"

"It’s not too late for us to drink it; you have thirty more minutes with me," Dalton glanced at his wristwatch.

Maya felt a giddy excitement; she didn’t have to leave yet. She loved being in Dalton’s presence. She gets to be a princess, because he treats her like one, making her feel so precious.

The door suddenly burst open. "Hey, Dalton, miss me?" Soraya walked in, dressed very elegantly that Maya couldn’t help but admire her outfit.

Soraya came over and kissed Dalton on the cheek, then pulled him into a tight hug—an intimate embrace that will make anyone think they’re lovers

A pang spread across Maya’s chest. Watching them made her feel like throwing up.

Dalton pulled away. "Soraya, shouldn’t you be somewhere in Europe? My cousin isn’t back yet."

Soraya flashed him a smile. "I’m not here for your cousin. I know Charlotte won’t be back for another two weeks. I have a business proposal for you," she said as she majestically sat in one of the three leather chairs in the office.

"Hello, cousin. Doing your chef duties, I see, " Soraya said to Maya in a sweet tone, but Maya could detect the disdain underlying her words.

"Yes, I’ll excuse you two," Maya replied, placing the bottle of wine back in the delivery bag, and was ready to make her exit

"No, wait, don’t leave Maya," Dalton said, stopping her from leaving. "I have something to discuss with you," he informs her.

Soraya was taken aback, the glee that was on her face when she thought Maya was leaving drained up

"Sure," Maya joyfully hurled herself back into her seat.

Dalton’s phone rang, and he moved to his desk to answer it. With him occupied, Soraya seized the opportunity to shoot deadly glares at Maya. Maya simply laughed in response, rolling her eyes. This infuriated Soraya because she wasn’t getting the reaction she wanted.

Soraya quickly snapped back into a perfectly poised facade when she saw Dalton approaching her. He sat in a leather chair opposite her.

"What business proposal do you have for me?" Dalton asked Soraya politely.

Soraya crossed her legs gracefully and clasped her hands in her lap as she said, "I learned that you have yet to venture into the fashion sector because it is mostly dominated by women, and your ruthless business approach may be too harsh for them."

"That is correct," Dalton admitted.

"Well, I found a solution for you, Dalton."

This piqued Dalton’s interest. "What solution?"

Soraya smiled. "I’m your solution."

Dalton raised an eyebrow. "You?"

Soraya nods. "I am a prominent figure in the fashion world, being a former beauty pageant queen, and all. I also have a lot of big fashion magazines at my disposal. "She brags. "I have built quite a network of connections. Why don’t we go into partnership? I can help you obtain any fashion company you want by leveraging my status and connections," she coerces him.

Maya pretended to be busy with something on her phone, but she was actually listening to their conversation. She was impressed with Soraya; using a partnership as a ploy to get closer to Dalton, is very clever and easy.

Maya couldn’t help but make a comparison. Soraya was offering him a lucrative business partnership, while she was only offering food.

"Okay, I will ask my lawyer to draw up a partnership contract," Dalton said, accepting Soraya’s partnership offer without hesitation.

Just like that? Maya’s chest constricted. Soraya is really going to succeed in winning Dalton’s heart. She is not happy about this at all.

A victorious smile spread across Soraya’s face. "That was quick, but I’m not complaining at all" She laughed. "Let’s celebrate with a drink," She suggested excitedly.

"I’m sorry, I can’t," Dalton sharply declined.

Soraya’s face turned sulky. "Why not?"

"I have an important discussion with Maya," Dalton reminds her.

Soraya rage seeping eyes pinned on Maya. This time, Maya smirked triumphantly in return.

"Two points for Maya, one point for Soraya," Maya thought playfully to herself.

She knows she said she doesn’t want to be like the other girls who fight over a man, but her rivalry with Soraya is inevitable. Soraya is going to retaliate and might do something crazy to her.

Maya sighs inwardly. She doesn’t like drama, but drama loves her.

Even though she has feelings for Dalton, she is not going to do anything to try to win his heart. She is just going to be her normal self around him. , Soraya, on the other hand, is going to do everything possible to make Dalton her husband.

"Alright, another time then," Soraya said with disappointment. "See you later, Dalton." She picked up her bag. "And see you at home, Maya." Her voice was filled with threats, making Maya a bit wary.

Soraya bolted out the door.

"So, what do you want to discuss with me?" Maya asked Dalton as she poured two glasses of white wine.

Dalton retook his seat at the table and picked up one of the glasses. "I have nothing to discuss with you; I just want to spend more time with you," he said, staring at Maya as if she were a priceless jewel he never wants to lose.

A gasp escaped from Maya’s parted lips, she took a sip of the wine to hide a smile. She was very flattered. His words made her heart start beating a unique rhythm only for him.

"Cheers," she clinks her glass with Dalton’s.

A smug smile tugged at the corners of her lips. She is truly an obstacle for Soraya —poor thing, Maya mocks her in her mind.
