Chapter 74: 74: Homeless Rescue

"You’re not heading home?" Adrian sked quietly.

"Of course I am. But not after dropping you off at your own home," Alexander replied, swerving the car to another road.

Adrian gulped.

’Why didn’t it feel like home anymore?’ He wondered, staring out at the familiar street that now looked strange.

"Why, boss? Why are you bringing me back here-oh!" He gasped he the car suddenly screeched to a stop, sending him forward, and he would have smashed his head on the dashboard if he hadn’t braced his hand on it.

"Get out," Alexander snapped angrily.

"Boss?" Adrian asked, catching his breath from the near-death experience.

"Don’t make me use force, Adrian," Alexander said, not glancing at Adrian.

Adrian stared out at the lonely street, that part of the street was always dangerous, homeless pickpockets and other criminals usually resided there.

He never walked this part. A taxi was safer or with a company. But now, Alexander was ditching him in the middle of danger without a thought.

He couldn’t believe he let himself be shocked by that act. He already knew that Alexander was a monster, yet he kept giving himself hope that the monster had an atom of soft spot for him.

He turned, facing Alexander’s stiff profile, "Alexander... please. I can’t go out here –"

"GET. OUT!" Alexander slammed his hand on the steering wheel, snapping his angry face at Adrian, his fingers gripping the steering wheel tightly.

Adrian was startled by the aggression, slowly leaning backwards for safety. His eyes were moistening slowly.

"What did I do?" He asked shakily.

Alexander chuckled dryly, shaking his head, "Just go, Adrian. I’m giving you the freedom you so desire." He said, his face expressionless.

Adrian dug his nails into his hands, his face frowning.

"Alexander, why are you being hard on yourself? On us?" Adrian asked quietly, trying to reach out for Alexander’s hand.

"There is no us!" Alexander shouted, slapping Adrian’s hand away before it could touch him.

Adrian gasped, shocked from the stinging pain at the back of his hand as he reeled back from Alexander.

Alexander gritted his teeth when he saw the hurt in Adrian’s eyes, and his anger intensified as he compared Adrian’s current look to the one he wore when he was with Sebastian.

He understood now that Adrian would never be happy being him. He’d only ever hurt him.

"You didn’t have to hurt me, Alex," Adrian murmured, slowly taking off his seat belt.

He placed his hand on the door handle and sighed, "You’re jealous, Alexander. And, I think you’ve realised why you’re jealous, but, you’re fighting it... You’re fighting your feelings. Maybe you don’t hate me... maybe you –"

"Love you?" Alexander spoke completely with a flat tone, shaking his head in the end.

"Yes, Alexander," Adrian turned his head to look at Alexander’s cold face, "maybe you love me and can’t stand me being with someone else. Maybe you think your mother and family won’t respect you anymore when they realise you married a guy, maybe you’re afraid of rejection, maybe you think I –"

"Get out, Adrian. I hope my actions show you just how much I don’t love you. I’m simply giving you the freedom you desired," Alexander stated, his tone absolute.

"Yes, boss. Forget I said those things, it was just me blabbering –"

"Like always," Alexander cut in.

Adrian slowly nodded, and then he pushed the door open and left the car.

The moment he set his feet on the ground, Alexander’s car zoomed off behind him, leaving him stranded on the lonely, quiet street.

Adrian gulped, looking from left to right.

Seeing no one in sight, he moved, crossing over to the alley that could lead him right to his apartment.

The sun was setting, plunging the alley into mild darkness, but he forged on, not waiting for the darkness to swallow him whole.

He was surprised to find that the usual men loitering around the alley were gone, not a single one in sight. It was a good thing, it meant no harm was going to come his way.

His phone suddenly rang, startling his already frightened heart.

He quickly pulled his out and answered the unknown number, thinking it was Mrs. Devereux again.

"Hello, Ma’am, " He paused, glancing around the darkening alley.

"Hello, Adrian. I didn’t know you had a bone of respect in you,"

"Chloe?" Adrian was shocked, "How... what do you want?" He asked, his tone hardening.

"Your death. I’ve been waiting for your return. Thanks to my friends, they called me the moment you stepped out of Alexander’s car." Chloe chuckled.

Adrianheart skipped a beat, his hands turning cold as he slowly started to hear footsteps approaching him in the dark.

"Shit, Chloe, what have you done? You’ll regret this, you witch–"

"Aww, save your strength, Adrian. You’ll need it for dying," the call abruptly ended.

"Fucking bitch," Adrian muttered and immediately took off running.

If he could just get out of this alley, he’d be safe when he got to where other humans were.

However, he was halfway out when a hard object suddenly collided with the back of his head, knocking him down with force, and blurring his vision.

He tried to prop himself up with his elbows but he received another hit on his back, knocking the air out of his lungs. He fell back onto the ground, plastering his cheek on the dirt and groaning.

He wasn’t given a breather, they kept hitting him I’m the dark alley.

Kicking, dragging, beating.

Adrian felt his blood flowing out from different parts of his body, he couldn’t tell where the pain started or ended, all he knew was that he was losing consciousness with each hit he received.

He no longer bothered to fight back or try to see the faces of his attackers because the whole place was already getting dark and his vision was blurred and bloodied.

A muffled groan escaped Adrian’s lips as he felt the heavy hit behind his neck, it was the final hit that snatched his consciousness out of him. And before he gave up to the darkness, he heard one of the men asking the others not to kill him.

After that, he felt his breath leave him, leaving him lying unconscious on the dirty ground of the dark alley.

Adrian believed he was going to be dead before anyone found him.

Sadly, he had no one to notice his absence, Alexander was never going to come back for him, he just dumped him and was never looking back.

He had no one, only his sick mother who had no idea what was going on outside the hospital walls.

Was this how he died? Beaten and bleeding.

He didn’t want to die that way, he wished to see his mother one last time, to see her weak smile, to hear her fragile voice call his name, he couldn’t die now.

Unfortunately, help wasn’t coming from anywhere, no one knew where he was or what had happened.

He might just die out there.

The harsh, unforgiving pain drove right through Adrian’s head, forcing his consciousness back with brutal urgency, causing his head to feel like it was splitting in two.

He groaned lowly from the sudden pain in his head and body. He felt like he’d been run over a hundred times by a trailer, he couldn’t even move a single muscle in his body.

’I survived,’ The thought echoed in his aching head.

"Are you awake?" A man’s voice asked beside Adrian’s bed.

Adrian’s eyes twitched as he tried to force them open, he groaned as it took almost all the strength he had left to pull his eyelids up.

"Hold on, I’ll call the nurse,"

Adrian only managed to see the blurry image of a man hurrying out of the room.

Slowly, he forced his eyes to focus on the fading, grey ceiling above him. The lights filtered in through the small window by the side of the faded wall.

He could smell the mild scent of antiseptic and bleach, letting him know he was in a hospital. But, from the look of the place, it wasn’t some high-end hospital, it was more like a roadside clinic, but he wanst complaining. He was very grateful that someone actually found him and decided to bring him to the hospital.

He could feel the bandages around his head, arms, and legs. He looked like a Mummy. He couldn’t tell if the tight bandage around his head was the cause of his banding headache or if it was the hit he had received from those homeless thugs.

"Ugh..." he grunted as he tried to get up, his bones protesting like old, rusty engines.

He gave up and lay back on the stiff pillow behind his head.

He heard their footsteps before he heard their voice.

"Mr. Adrian, you’re awake," a female nurse walked toward his bed, smiling kindly at him.

Adrian looked behind her and saw the shabby-looking man with overgrown hair standing behind the nurse.

"You saved me?" He asked quietly, his voice rough from disuse and thirst.

The man stepped forward, tugging the hem of his brown shirt.

"Yes, I had no choice but to bring you to the hospital downtown. You were bleeding out in my sleeping space," he chuckled, scratching the back of his neck.

Adrian wanted to smile but his facial muscles hurt, too.

"Thank you," he croaked out, holding back his tears.

He was saved by a homeless man. If only he had a way to repay the kind soul. This was a kind of favour worth being grateful for a lifetime.

"Oh, don’t thank me, anyone would have done the same. Right, nurse?" The man glanced at the kind nurse.

The nurse smiled in response before facing Adrian again.

"Mr. Adrian. You were brought in by midnight and this morning, Mr. Willow managed to find your phone in his home, and I was able to make two contacts in your recently phoned contacts. They will be here soon to take you to a better hospital," she explained.

Adrian frowned.

Two contacts from his recently phoned contacts?

Who might that be?

The only people who called him last were Mrs. Devereux and Chloe, both were unknown numbers.

"Who... who were they?" Adrian asked.

"I’m sorry, Mr. Adrian, but no one saw the people who did this to you –"

"No, not them. I meant the people you called, who were they?" Adrian coughed slightly. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

The nurse blinked slowly, "Oh, Mr. Vale and Mr. Devereux. Mr. Vale actually called by himself, he said he wanted to check in with you about tonight. Unfortunately, I told him the bad news and he said he was on his way." She narrated.

Adrian sighed, he wished he could really love Sebastian. But, after everything, he didn’t want to love anyone. He didn’t want to give anyone the power to choose how he felt, even in the slightest.

"And, Mr. Devereux?" He questioned.

He wanted to know Alexander’s reaction after he learnt what happened to him.

"Oh, he was a man of few words, he only told me to make sure you’re alive or I die with you," she chuckled nervously.

Adrian scoffed, " Of course." He murmured.

"Can you call him? Mr. Devereux. Tell him not to bother that I’m fine and already left the hospital. Please," Adrian begged, staring at the nurse’s face, his eyes moistening.

The nurse sighed, "What if he’s already on his way?" She asked, glancing at Mr. Willow.

"Text him. He’ll turn back when he sees the text. Trust me. Just make it sound like I’m the one texting," Adrian said.

The talking was draining Adrian, but he needed to make sure he didn’t see the face of the man who was responsible for his near-death experience.

"Alright," The nurse pulled out Adrian’s phone from her pocket and after typing a few words, she looked at him and nodded, "Done. Oh, Mr. Vale just texted, he’s arrived. I’ll go get him in," she placed the phone down on the table and left the room.

Adrian sighed, looking at Mr. Willow, "Thank you, Mr. Willow. I really would have died if you hadn’t brought me here. Thank you," he murmured.

Mr. Willow smiled, lowering himself on the seat beside the bed, "You don’t have to thank me. It’s only right I did it –"

"Mr. Adrian, I’m sorry, they arrived at the same time," the nurse walked into the room with two intimidating men right behind her.

They suddenly looked so small with their presence, their elegance a sharp contrast to the shabby background.

Adrian gritted his teeth the moment he saw Alexander walk into the room. He did look at him, and he never planned to.

His eyes settled on Sebastian, who looked devastated as he saw Adrian’s condition.

"Adrian, what happened? Are you okay?" Sebastian was about to move toward Adrian’s bed when Alexander held his shoulder.

"This is not the time for chit-chat. Move, I’m taking him home," Alexander said, gently side-stepping Sebastian.

"Don’t touch me," Adrian managed to speak clearly without breaking down. His voice was surprisingly even, calm.

Alexander paused, balling his fists as he stared at Adrian’s hateful eyes.

He knew why Adrian looked that way, he had caused it, he caused every darned thing that happened to Adrian.

"Sebastian, can you take me with you, please?" Adrian asked, his eyes shutting to stop the tears from rolling out.
