The Billionaire's Two-Faced Escort Wife-Chapter 91: Nostalgia
After a quick shower, Adrian went to the living room.
As usual, Angelica was setting the dining table with delicious food. However, Alexander was nowhere to be seen.
"Good morning, Angelica," Adrian greeted, walking over to the woman.
Angelica smiled, "Good morning, Adrian. Sleep well?" She asked.
Adrian nodded, "I did." He murmured, glancing around the room.
Angelicknew exactly who he was looking for, unfortunately, Alexander wasn’t even in the house.
"Mr. Devereux went out. Business, he said." Angelica revealed.
Adrian stilled, his heart broken by that single news.
Alexander wasn’t in the same building as him.
He left?
Without telling him?
Does it mean Alexander no longer values him? Didn’t love him as he claimed?
Why would he leave without notice?
Where would he go?
His mood was completely dampened. Even the delicious food no longer looked appetising.
Was he wrong for confessing his feelings to Alexander?
"Don’t look so sad, he will return soon. Here, sit and enjoy your breakfast. I’ll be right back with a wine," Angelica gently patted Adrian’s shoulder and walked back into the kitchen.
Adrian frowned as he stared at the table.
Sit and eat alone?
No way.
Since Alexander wanted to play the absent games, two can play it.
He glanced at the kitchen and then at the exit, and without thinking twice, Adrian snuck out of the house before Angelica could see or try to stop him.
He tapped his foot impatiently as he stood in the elevator, anger consuming him from within.
"How dare you?" He asked no one in particular, picturing Alexander standing in front of him.
"You think it’s cool to disappear on someone? You know how much I want to be near you, yet—" he paused and sighed, shaking his head at himself.
"I’m going crazy," he muttered.
He was now a prisoner of Alexander, even in his boss’s absence, he was still affected by his action.
But, as he said, two can play the game. He was going out and would not return until midnight.
"Let’s see who worries the most," He muttered as he walked out of the elevator and headed out of the building.
Ten minutes later, Adrian got out of the taxi and headed into the hospital.
Where else would he have gone if not to see his mother?
"Good morning, Ms. Elizabeth," hr greeted the nurse at the reception.
"Good morning, Mr. Cole. Here to visit your mum?" Elizabeth asked.
Adrian nodded, "Yes," he paused in front of the counter, waiting for the visitor’s card.
"Here you go. Thirty minutes allowed. The patient needs all the rest she can get," Elizabeth said, handing Adrian a blue card with a room number over to Adrian.
"Thank you," Adriassud said as he took the card.
Thirty minutes was too small, but he had no other choice but to accept what was given.
He walked toward the elevator and lifted his hand to press open the door. But he didn’t.
He needed to clear his head before he met his mother.
He turned toward the stairs and sprinted up.
His mother’s hospital room wasn’t that far, just four staircases from the first floor.
Halfway there, he was panting but never regretted his decision. The pain was part of the distraction from Alexander’s thoughts.
Finally, emerged on the fourth floor, leaning against the wall to catch his breath. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
He stared at his mother’s room ahead and straightened up. He hoped he wouldn’t break down in front of his mother.
Slowly, he walked over to the door, as if delaying his steps would make the journey any longer than it should.
With a deep breath, he scanned the blue card on the door and quietly pushed it in and slid into the room.
The first thing he saw was his mother’s pale face staring quietly at the ceiling.
His throat tightened, a sob trying to escape but he swallowed hard, staying strong.
"Is it time for another chemo, doctor?" The woman asked without turning toward the door, as if she was already used to doctors or nurses coming in to take her for different tests.
Adrian inhaled shakily, noting the sadness in his mother’s voice.
"It’s not a doctor, Mom, it’s your son," he announced and walked over to her bed, smiling.
His mother suddenly turned, her eyes widening when she saw her son smiling at her.
"Adrian?" She called, her voice trembling.
She reached out a shaky hand to hold Adrian, but he didn’t let her stress him much.
He leaned down and hugged his mother, burying his face in her neck.
"It’s me, Mom. I’m here," He whispered, kissing her temple and smiling down at her.
She managed a weak smile, cupping Adrian’s cheek, "Oh, Adrian, my strong baby. Everything is going to be fine." She whispered, patting his cheek.
Adrian chuckled to cover his emotion.
He was on the verge of breaking down.
After six months of being busy with work and life, he finally had the time to see his mother, and he wasn’t expecting her to be the one consoling him.
"How are you, Mom?" He asked, lowering himself beside her on the bed.
She nodded, "I’m fine." She replied, not letting go of his hand, "How are you, son?" She asked on return.
Adrian sighed.
If only he could offload everything he had gone through on his mother. But that would be insensitive of him; she was in no condition to listen to his dark stories.
So, instead of a long, tiring story, he said, "I’m fine." A big, fat lie.
His mother shook her head, "Tell me the truth, Adrian. I know we can never afford such a hospital. I was suddenly moved from my previous hospital this expensive-looking one. How do you afford it?" She questioned slowly.
"I know Jonas, he isn’t helping with the bills. He hasn’t even come to visit me once. It must be so hard for you, Adrian, please, tell me you’re not into some fraudulent activities." She asked, searching his face.
She could feel he was hiding something and she really hoped it wasn’t something bad.
Adrian laughed, leaning down to kiss the back of his mother’s hand.
"Relax, mother. You know me, I would never get involved with illegal people like Jonas. I’m responsible. Just trust me, okay?" He said, looking at her face.
She didn’t budge, she might be sick, but her spirit was just as stubborn as before.
"No, Adrian, tell me how you can afford my medical bills, or I will refuse to receive them–"
"Whoa, wish, okay, okay, calm down, queen.’ He gently patted his shoulder.
He was not about to have her refuse the treatment he had suffered so much to afford for her.
He has paid her bills with his body and heart, and refusing treatment was not an option.
"Then," She cupped her chin, "Tell me, Adrian. How are you paying the bills?" She questioned.
Adrian sighed, "It’s nothing serious, Mom. I just took a loan from my boss. You know the famous billionaire, Mr. Alexander Devereux, he’s my boss, and he’s very generous. I just have to keep working for him until my debt is paid." He explained.
Well, it wasn’t technically a lie.
Alexdid loan him the money, but he committed the full details of the repayment process, his mother would faint if she ever found out what he was really doing with his boss.
"Really?" She sighed in relief, a small smile appearing on her lips, "Thank God. You’re such a good boy, Adrian. And, I’m sorry for being a burden to you–"
"You’re not a burden to me, mother. You’re my mother, it is my duty to take care of you, I love you, Mom, and don’t ever think of yourself as a burden." He told her, his eyes glancing at her teary eyes.
He would be strong in front of her, if he cried, she would never stop crying.
"I love you more, Adrian. Your father would have been so proud of you." She murmured, blinking her tears away.
Adrian smiled, "I know, Mom. But, having you here with me is already enough. Do you want to eat something?" He asked, "I could go get something to eat for you." He offered.
She shook her head, "It’s fine, Adrian. The hospital feeds me according to what they think I need. I’m not hungry." She replied.
Adrian nodded and took out his phone.
"Selfie?" He asked, ready positioning the phone above them.
His mother gave a few smiles, but in a few moments, the camera captured her worried, sad, and empty eyes.
Adrian ignored it, choosing to act all positive around her and lift her spirit.
"I’m sorry, Mr. Adrian, but visiting time is over," a nurse suddenly walked into the room, pushing a wheelchair in front of her.
"It’s time for another test," Adrian’s mother spoke in a small voice.
Adrian frowned slightly, looking at the nurse.
"Can I stay? I’m her son," he said.
The nurse shook her head, "I’m sorry, just the patient. You can visit again tomorrow," she told him.
"It’s okay, son. I will see you tomorrow. Promise?" Adrian’s mother asked him, holding his hand as if she never wanted to let go.
Adrian bit his lip and nodded, "I promise, Mom. I will visit you everyday util you’re out of the hospital. I love you." He murmured and kissed her cheek before straightening.
"I’ll be on my way now," he said to the nurse and walked out of the room.
He reached the door and paused, glancing behind to take one last look at his mother, and then he was gone.
The moment Adrian stepped out of the hospital, a familiar car parked in front of him and he didn’t need to guess who it was.
He sighed as the passenger door opened, revealing Sebastian Vale, dressed in expensive, laid-back clothes—dark, perfectly fitted jeans, a soft cashmere sweater, and stylish sunglasses that masked his eyes but couldn’t hide his intent.
