Chapter 119: Chapter 119: If I Don’t Care for Her, Who Should I Care For?

Chloe Preston grew nervous again.

Luna Kane pulled her to sit by her side, reaching out to gently stroke her belly. "How many months?"

"Just over five months," Chloe Preston replied.

Rosalind Rowan also fixed her gaze on Chloe’s belly, her nails digging painfully into her palms.

This bitch! What right does she have to bear Donovan’s child? The title of Mrs. Xavier is something only she, Rosalind Rowan, is worthy of!

Rosalind suppressed her emotions, putting on a gentle and charming expression as she presented the gift she had brought to the old lady.

"Grandma, happy birthday. This is the gift I brought for you. Please, see if you like it!"

Luna smiled warmly. "Oh, my dear, you’re too kind. You shouldn’t have brought anything."

She reached out, took the box, and opened it.

Inside lay a jade bead necklace with 108 beads. Each one was perfectly round and full, of the finest dragon stone variety with a pure, rich color—a quality rarely seen on the market.

Chloe worked in the jade business, so she immediately recognized it as an item of great value.

Luna caressed the beads a few times. "It’s lovely. You’re very thoughtful."

Rosalind smiled brightly, taking the necklace and carefully fastening it around Luna’s neck. "It looks even better on you. It matches your cheongsam perfectly."

Luna didn’t say anything, but the smile in her eyes showed how pleased she was with the necklace.

Seeing that she was in a good mood, Rosalind linked arms with her and said with a faint smile, "Grandma, actually, I wasn’t the one who prepared this gift."

Luna hummed, "Hmm?"

Rosalind hesitated for a few seconds before saying cautiously, "Grandma, this necklace was prepared for you by Grandpa Xavier. He knows you don’t want to see him again, so he asked me to bring it to you."

"Shut up!" Donovan’s expression changed instantly.

Rosalind froze, startled by his outburst.

A storm of emotions raged in Luna’s eyes. She drew a sharp breath, her hands clenching into tight fists.

CRACK! In the next instant, the necklace was violently ripped apart, its beads clattering across the floor. A teacup was also swept from the table, shattering with a loud CRASH as tea splashed everywhere.

"Housekeeper Wyatt!" Her voice was incredibly unsteady.

"Madam!" Housekeeper Wyatt cried, rushing over with the wheelchair.

Luna threw off the blanket covering her legs and, with the careful help of a servant, struggled into the wheelchair.

"I’m tired. You may all do as you please."

With those parting words, her chest heaving slightly, she was pushed out of the room by Housekeeper Wyatt.

Realizing she had misspoken, Rosalind was at a loss for what to do and quickly got up to chase after them.

Donovan immediately turned to comfort Chloe. "Were you scared?"

Chloe shook her head. "No."

"Your grandmother’s legs..."

Donovan’s gaze fell, and his voice grew heavy. "They’re crippled. She’ll never be able to stand again."

"It was... my grandfather."

"Your grandfather?" Chloe was shocked and couldn’t believe it. "Why would he do that?"

"I’m not completely sure about the details of their generation," Donovan said. "I only heard from my father that Grandma and Grandpa had an arranged business marriage. He was in love with someone else."

"For that woman, my grandmother suffered a great deal in her youth. I heard my grandfather beat her, caused her to have two miscarriages, and even crippled her legs. Now, every time it rains, the pain is unbearable."

"Also, she’s deaf in her right ear."

"Your grandfather did that, too?" Chloe asked, gripping his arm tightly.

Donovan nodded.

Chloe gasped.

What a cruel and ruthless old man!

"And then?" she asked.

"She wanted a divorce, but Grandpa refused," Donovan said in a somber tone. "Right after she gave birth to my father, she left. Grandpa came to regret it, and he started coming to Veridia Garden every year to beg for her forgiveness."

"One year, I remember he even knelt outside the gate."

"But my grandmother refused to see him ever again. For decades, she has turned him away."

Chloe fell silent.

After a moment, a mist formed in her eyes as she spoke hoarsely, "Your grandmother... how pitiful."

"Donovan Xavier, you won’t treat me like that in the future, will you?"

Donovan gently pinched her small face and kissed her. "I can’t get enough of loving you. How could I ever bear to treat you that way?"

At night, the crescent moon hung high in the sky as the wind stirred the plantain leaves.

By the pond, Luna sat in her wheelchair, her silver hair glistening as she quietly watched a pool of lotuses.

Donovan strolled over and draped a shawl over her shoulders. "It’s hot during the day, but it gets quite cool at night. Be careful not to catch a chill."

Luna had a peaceful expression on her face. Lightly rolling the Buddha Beads in her hands, she glanced at him. "Where’s that girlfriend of yours?"

"I was afraid she’d get tired, so I had her stay inside," Donovan replied.

"You certainly dote on her."

Donovan smiled slightly. "She’s the only one I love. If I don’t dote on her, who will?"

Luna was silent for a few seconds before saying, "The Xavier Family doesn’t like her?"

"They don’t."

"Why?"

Donovan sighed. "They dislike her for her humble background. Her father is an alcoholic gambler drowning in debt."

"That does sound... less than ideal," Luna commented. "Your Xavier Family has always been particular about matches of equal social status."

Donovan looked at her, his dark eyes deep and serious. "Grandma, I really want to marry her."

"But Grandpa won’t allow it."

Luna’s hand, which had been rolling the Buddha Beads, paused. She looked up to meet his gaze. "So you brought her here hoping I would intervene and convince the Xavier Family to accept her."

Donovan nodded.

His eyes were slightly red, and his voice was hoarse. "Grandma, I know you hate Grandpa and never want to see him again, but I have no other options. I love her so much."

"I’m begging you. Can you please help me?"

He, who had always been so proud and aloof, was begging someone for the first time in his life.

Luna remained silent. She closed her eyes, her fingers gently rolling the Buddha Beads.

Standing under a ginkgo tree, Rosalind watched everything, a murderous cold light glinting in her eyes.

Chloe Preston thinks she can use that old hag to get into the Xavier Family? Hah! In her dreams!

「In the room.」

After her bath, Chloe was leaning against the sofa, casually flipping through a book.

CLICK—

The door suddenly opened.

"Chloe, I’m back. Are you asleep already?"

Donovan entered, tall and elegant, holding a bowl of tremella soup.

"Hubby!" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

Chloe immediately stood up and ran to him with a beaming smile. Her hair swayed gently as she wrapped her arms around his firm, strong forearm.

Donovan raised a hand and flicked her on the forehead. "You’re already pregnant, yet you’re still so reckless. What if you fell running so fast?"
