Chapter 132: Chapter 132: Married and Already Divorced?

Some time had passed.

They walked out of the marriage registry, and the gentle sunshine fell upon their smiling faces. Just as he’d said, the whole process went very smoothly—almost too quickly. With people still queueing behind them, Chloe Preston felt it lacked any sense of ceremony.

Still, they finally had their marriage certificates.

After getting into the car, Chloe Preston leaned back on the leather seat. She gazed at the two red booklets in her hands, her eyes glistening with joy.

It still feels unreal, like a dream.

In the next second, the man leaned over, his unique, masculine scent enveloping her. The corners of his lips lifted. "You’ve been staring at those for ages. Haven’t you had enough?"

Chloe Preston’s clear, lively eyes met his gaze. "Are we really married?"

Donovan Xavier reached out. With a smile, he tapped the marriage certificates in her hand with his long, slender fingers. "The papers are right in your hand. How could they be fake?"

A bright, sparkling smile lit up Chloe Preston’s eyes.

"This happy?" Donovan Xavier leaned back in his seat, looking at her lazily, his features impossibly handsome.

Her smile unwavering, Chloe Preston nodded. "Of course. What, are you not happy about marrying me?"

Donovan Xavier stretched out his long legs, his reply a low, slow, "Happy."

Chloe Preston suddenly leaned over and poked his handsome face with a soft fingertip. "But, Mr. Xavier, your attitude seems a little cool."

Donovan Xavier took her hand, a smile playing on his lips as he idly stroked it. "Is that so?"

"Yes."

"If you’re not that eager to marry me, we haven’t left yet. We could go right back inside and file for a divorce."

"Get a divorce right after getting married?" Donovan Xavier raised an eyebrow.

Chloe Preston folded her arms. "It’s not out of the question."

The words had barely left her lips when he cupped her chin with one hand, lowered his head, and gave her soft, rosy lips a firm kiss. It was a dominant, forceful kiss.

Chloe Preston blushed slightly and avoided his gaze, murmuring, "You always like to kiss me so suddenly."

Donovan Xavier chuckled and leaned closer, his nose brushing against her cheek before he placed a kiss by her ear. "Chloe Preston, I’ve wanted to marry you for a very long time."

"Now that we have the certificates, you’re my wife for life. You’re my Mrs. Xavier."

"In the future, I’ll never divorce you, even if you regret this. I won’t let you go, either. You’re destined to be mine and mine alone."

Chloe Preston didn’t struggle. Instead, she initiated a kiss, her lips meeting his before she pulled back with a slow smile. "Mm, I won’t regret it."

"That sounds a lot like your grandfather, though. Grandma wanted to divorce him so badly, but he would never agree."

Donovan Xavier loosened his hold slightly, his voice deep. "I’m not like him. He broke Grandma’s heart. I won’t do that."

"Chloe Preston, I’ll be a good husband. I won’t make you unhappy."

Chloe Preston shot him a look and huffed. "Talk is cheap. Who knows what you’ll be like in the future? Don’t make promises you can’t keep."

Donovan Xavier ruffled her hair, a playful grin on his face. "Alright. In that case, I’ll have to ask Mrs. Xavier to watch my performance from now on. I guarantee your satisfaction."

Chloe Preston looked out the car window and sighed softly. "I’ll have to put up with it even if I’m not satisfied. It’s not like there’s a return policy."

Donovan Xavier pinched her soft cheek.

Chloe Preston lowered her gaze to the two red booklets in her hand. "These... should you keep them, or should I?"

Donovan Xavier thought for a moment. "How about we burn them?"

"Why?"

"That way, we can’t get divorced."

Chloe Preston was left speechless.

The look in Donovan Xavier’s eyes softened. But in the next moment, the movement pulled at his wound. A flash of pain crossed his face, and his complexion paled slightly.

"Is your wound hurting?" Chloe Preston asked with concern.

Donovan Xavier nodded. "A little."

"Then stop moving around! I’ll drive," Chloe Preston insisted.

"It’s my fault. You’re injured and should be resting in bed. We shouldn’t have rushed over here today."

Donovan Xavier gazed at her beautiful face, his dark eyes deep as he smiled faintly. "I was the impatient one. I didn’t want to wait another moment to make you my Mrs. Xavier for real."

Twenty minutes later, Chloe Preston drove the car back to the Xavier family’s old residence.

The car doors opened, and they both got out.

Isla Xavier was already waiting by the door. When she saw them return, she ran up and linked arms with Chloe Preston. "Sister-in-law, did getting the certificates go smoothly?"

Chloe Preston nodded. "Mhm."

"The certificates! Where are the certificates?" Isla Xavier asked eagerly, a sweet smile on her face.

Chloe Preston took the red booklets from her bag and handed them to her. "Here, have a look."

Isla Xavier held one up to the sunlight, flipping it open with fascination. "Wow, so this is a marriage certificate!"

Donovan Xavier’s brow furrowed. "We just got those. Don’t you dare ruin them."

Chloe Preston found it amusing.

And here’s the man who was talking about burning them just a little while ago.

Just then, her phone chimed with a notification. Chloe Preston glanced down and casually opened it.

It was from the anonymous texter again.

Chloe’s heart skipped a beat.

"I see you haven’t taken my words to heart. I’ll say this one last time: leave Donovan Xavier and get out of Kryton within two days."

"Otherwise, the only thing waiting for you is death."

The color in Chloe’s eyes shifted, and she texted back.

"Why are you sending me this? Are you the one who wants to kill me?"

The person on the other end replied, "I’m doing this for your own good. You’ll only be safe if you leave the man surnamed Xavier."

Chloe typed, "Who are you? Do we know each other?"

The other side didn’t reply.

Chloe looked up and scanned her surroundings, a sudden chill running down her spine.

Donovan Xavier took her hand.

The touch startled Chloe, and she nearly jerked her hand away.

"Chloe, what’s wrong?" Noticing her anxiety, Donovan gently squeezed her fingertips and asked softly.

"N-nothing," Chloe stammered, shaking her head.

Having seen enough, Isla Xavier returned the red booklets. She linked her arm with Chloe’s and smiled. "Sister-in-law, let’s go inside so Grandpa can see your marriage certificates."

"Brother, what do you think Grandpa’s reaction will be?"

Donovan Xavier’s handsome face was unreadable as he replied slowly, "It goes without saying. He’ll definitely be angry enough to pass out."

「In the room.」

By the floor-to-ceiling window, Luna Kane sat in her wheelchair, her hair a shock of silver. A thin blanket covered her legs as she silently watched the scenery outside.

Caleb Xavier held a bowl of seafood porridge, slowly squatting beside her. "Luna, you still dislike breakfast, just like before. I made this myself. Won’t you have a little?"

There was a time when Luna loved his cooking, but he had never cherished her and rarely cooked for her.

"Take it away," Luna said flatly.

"Luna..." Caleb pushed the bowl toward her, his tone pleading. "Please, just have a little, okay?"

Luna closed her eyes, ignoring him.

At that moment, there was a knock on the door.

"Come in," Luna said.

CLICK.

The door opened, and Donovan Xavier walked in, holding Chloe’s hand.

Caleb stood up. The moment he saw Chloe Preston, his expression darkened, his face filled with disgust.

"Did you get the certificates?" Luna’s voice was gentle.

Donovan nodded. "We did. It went smoothly."

Caleb sneered. "If it weren’t for Luna, I would have died before agreeing to let you marry her!"

Luna was silent for a few seconds before beckoning a maid over. Her voice was devoid of emotion. "Since they have the certificates, there’s no need for me to stay any longer. It’s time for me to return to Ryston."

"What did you say?" Caleb grew anxious at once. "Luna, you’re leaving?"

"Yes!"

Caleb grabbed her wheelchair, trying to stop it. "No! I won’t allow it! Luna, you promised me! You said that if I agreed to their marriage, you would stay!"

Luna’s tone was unchanged. "I did promise, but I can also go back on my word."

She lifted her gaze to meet his. "That’s something you taught me."

Then she motioned for the maid to push her out.

Caleb dropped to his knees in front of her, his eyes red as he begged, "Luna, I’m begging you. Now that you’re back, please don’t leave me again, okay?"

"I didn’t come back for you," Luna’s voice was cold.

She was determined to leave; he was stubborn in his attempts to stop her. For a long moment, they were at an impasse.

Caleb reached for her hand, tears slipping down his cheeks. "Luna, I was wrong. Can you forgive me?"

Luna was silent for a long time. When she finally met his gaze, her own eyes were red-rimmed, and her voice was hoarse. "Caleb Xavier, I can no longer hear in my right ear. My legs are crippled."

"You’re the one who did this to me. You are the cause of every misfortune in my life. You tell me, how am I supposed to forgive you?"

Caleb wept silently.

In the end, he couldn’t make her stay. She left.

A while later, Isla stepped forward and bit her lip. "Grandpa, are you okay?"

Caleb was silent at first. Then, he raised a hand to wipe away his tears. He turned, took a deep breath, and fixed his gaze on Donovan. "Now that your grandmother is gone, I order you to divorce this woman immediately!"

Donovan let out a cold laugh. "We already have the marriage certificates. What’s the point of a divorce now?"

"Whether you accept it or not, Chloe is now your granddaughter-in-law and a member of the Xavier family!"
