Chapter 136: Head in the Clouds

"Eternity?" A familiar voice called out. "Earth to Eternity?"

Eternity blinked, finding herself standing in front of Evan’s table while holding (surprisingly) a few pieces of folders.

Sitting on his office chair was Evan, who had a look of worry on his face.

"Are you okay?" He asked, a crease forming on his forehead. This line, she noticed, had become more prominent as of late. "You’ve got your head in the clouds for quite a few days now."

Eternity sighed, placing the few folders in her hand on Evan’s table.

"I just can’t help but feel bothered by J’s words last time," she admitted, her expression evidently crestfallen.

"The one where he told you to be wary of Jakob?" Evan asked.

Eternity nodded, her hands unknowingly balled into a fist by her side.

"I don’t know what to make of it."

Evan looked at her for a few seconds before returning his attention to his tablet, reading the e-documents that never seemed to lessen in number, no matter how many documents he had signed and studied.

"Maybe he meant that literally?" he suggested. "I don’t know about you, Eternity, but it seemed like his words didn’t have room for interpretation, and you should take it as it is."

She groaned, going back to the sofa, where more documents were on the coffee table, waiting for her to finish them.

"Do you think Jakob is untrustworthy?" Eternity asked as she opened a file and began writing notes on it for Evan to check once it was his turn to double-check the report.

"Isn’t the answer to that question rather obvious?" Evan smirked.

She rolled her eyes. "Just answer the question, Evan."

Evan smiled, finding her annoyance adorable. To prevent her from getting more pissed at him, Evan decided to answer her query.

"I trust Jakob, but I always have my reservations."

"Didn’t you say Jakob was one of your most competent workers?" Eternity reminded him, sounding quite puzzled by his answers that were contradictory. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

"His work ethics and his ethics as a person are not congruent to each other, Eternity," he pointed out. "He could be my best employee in terms of efficiency, but he can still be untrustworthy at the same time."

She hummed, taking his words into consideration. After a few seconds of contemplation, Eternity finally spoke.

"I guess I shouldn’t completely disregard J’s warning."

Evan nodded. "It doesn’t hurt to be more vigilant with the people around you."

"Oh," Evan exclaimed, covering his mouth as a yawn threatened to escape. "It seems like we went overboard. It’s already past office hours."

Eternity checked her smartwatch, her moss-green eyes widening as she saw the time. "You should go home now, Eternity," he said. "I’ll follow you soon after."

This had been their routine since Eternity became an official employee at RBAB. She would go home first, and Evan would follow thirty minutes later. Even though commuting separately was a waste of money, they knew it would cause an uproar within the company if colleagues saw them leaving together.

"Let me just clean up the coffee table," she said, beginning to pick up the files.

"Do you need some help?" Evan asked. "I could lend you a hand if you want."

Eternity shook her head. "It’s fine. It’s not like it’s heavy."

He nodded, watching her silently as she carried a pile of paperwork at least a foot high. She left the CEO’s office to go to the archives, returning the important documents to their proper places.

When she returned, Evan suddenly grabbed her shoulders and pushed her down onto the sofa. They landed with a soft ’thud,’ the springs inside the furniture creaking loudly under their combined weight.

"Wha--" Eternity exclaimed, startled to be suddenly pinned down on the sofa with Evan on top of her. "What are you doing?!"

"Should we try again?" He whispered against her ear before giving it a soft nibble.

"Try what again?" She asked cluelessly, squirming under Evan’s touch. "That tickles, Evan!"

"Office sex," Evan said teasingly. "Wasn’t that your aim? That’s why you started working here."

"N-no!" Eternity denied it, and her whole face turned red like a tomato. "I had pure intentions when I entered RBAB, Evan! Shouldn’t I be the one asking you that? You got me here because you wanted to experience office canoodling?"

"Canoodling--" he repeated in disbelief. "Where do you even get your vocabulary?"

"I read lots of books," she said proudly.

"I know you do," Evan chuckled. "Now, can I kiss you or not?"

"Please kiss me," Eternity pleaded, and that was the only thing he needed to get riled up.

"Let me close the lights first," he said before loudly speaking to the virtual assistant, "Alexa, close the lights."

Thank God he had smart lights in the room! He couldn’t be bothered with closing it himself. Anyway, the lights dimmed down, and when they did, that was when Evan swooped in to kiss her.

Their lips touched, and what a feeling it was! They had done this so many times in the past 6 months since Eternity entered his life, yet each time they kissed, he still couldn’t get enough of it!

Her lips were soft, so delectable, so... made for him! He felt like he was losing his mind each time they touched, each time they kissed, each time they had sex, and each time they were in the vicinity of each other!

And maybe it was because of this utter madness that they failed to notice the presence of someone entering the room.

The intruder loudly gasped upon seeing them, startling the lovers to immediately separate from each other.

"Don’t you know how to knock on the door before entering?!" Evan shouted, a volume that he hadn’t used in a while since Eternity entered his company.

It must be because the room was dark or the trespasser was fast, but before they could even identify who they were, they had already scurried away.

Evan and Eternity looked at each other. Even if the lights were off, they could see the expression on each other’s faces.

Panic.
