Chapter 145: The Doll’s Secret

"The truth is..." Eternity began, swallowing the imaginary lump in her throat. "I’m actually—"

She stopped mid-sentence, interrupted by the sound of Evan’s soft snoring. Eternity wrinkled her forehead in disbelief, letting out a slightly annoyed sigh.

"You fell asleep while sitting upright..." she whispered, gently assisting him to lie down on his bed properly.

She carefully moved his body, ensuring his head rested comfortably on the pillow.

Once Evan was comfortably lying on his bed with his pillow supporting his head, Eternity couldn’t help but stare at Evan’s serene sleeping face.

’What a sight Evanescence Holz truly is,’ she thought to herself, running her hand along his sharp jawline. ’But I’m scared that I might bring him to his ruins.’

She sat beside him for a moment longer, watching his chest rise and fall with each breath. Even though she was finally ready to tell him the truth about herself, it seemed like the odds weren’t in her favor.

She knew that there would come a day when he needed to know the truth about Eternity Women.

’But tonight wasn’t the night for revelations, it seems.’ Eternity thought, feeling a mix of disappointment and relief.

Her train of thought was interrupted by Evan’s snores, which were growing louder and louder by the second.

"How cute," Eternity cooed.

Gently, she leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead.

"Sleep well, Evan," she whispered, her tone full of love and care. "I’ll be here when you wake up."

For someone who worked and was the CEO of an alcoholic beverage company, Evan wasn’t much of a drinker. In fact, he tried his best to avoid drinking unless socially required.

"Holy fucking hell," Evan groaned. "My head is about to explode!"

Evan, like any other consumer of alcoholic beverages, woke up with the most intense hangover. His head was throbbing, and the light streaming through the window felt like daggers in his eyes.

He was in so much pain that he didn’t notice someone entering his room.

"Oh," Eternity exclaimed. "You’re already awake."

Evan slightly raised his head to look at her, only to slump down on his pillow again.

"Eternity..." he groaned. "I’m dying."

"No, you aren’t." She chuckled. "Since you’re already awake..."

Judging from the fact that the door creaked, Evan guessed without raising his head again that Eternity was exiting the room.

"Where are you going?" he asked, though it sounded more like a cry for help. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

"To the kitchen," she said simply. "I made you some chicken noodle soup and froze some electrolyte pops to help with your hangover."

"Thank you," he said with a muffled voice. "You are God-sent."

Eternity forced a smile, but it was unmistakably sad. However, Evan had no way of seeing it in his current distressed form.

"You aren’t sure about that," she whispered grimly.

"Thank you, Eternity," Evan said as he accepted the tray containing a steaming bowl of soup and three electrolyte popsicles.

"It’s always a pleasure," she beamed, sitting beside him on the bed.

Evan began eating his soup, letting out contented moans and groans as he devoured it, trying to fill his stomach, which was practically begging for food.

"Calm down, Evan," Eternity chuckled, watching her boyfriend in amusement as he attacked the bowl of chicken noodle soup with the ferocity of a starving man. "No one’s going to take your food away from you."

He didn’t respond, instead continuing to slurp loudly on his noodles, the broth dribbling slightly from the corners of his mouth.

"Really now, Evan?" she said, shaking her head with a smile.

Abruptly, Evan paused mid-slurp. He looked up at her, his usually sharp blue eyes still puffy and red from the intense crying session he had the night before.

"Did I say anything stupid last night?" he asked in a small voice.

Eternity grew stiff, realizing the implication of his words.

"You don’t remember?" she asked. Her voice was raspy and barely audible.

He looked back at his soup, which was half-empty at this point.

"I don’t," Evan admitted. "All I know is that my head hurts and my eyes are fucking swollen and heavy on my face."

"Well, you did cry buckets last night," Eternity said, not even trying to mince her words.

His head snapped in her direction, a frantic expression written all over his face. "Did I say the reason why I was crying?"

Seeing Evan’s expression, Eternity burst out laughing, clinging to her stomach for dear life. Evan rolled his eyes and gave his soup one last slurp before setting the bowl aside on the nightstand.

"Was it over something silly?" he asked, feeling slightly embarrassed over something he couldn’t even remember. "Also, stop laughing so loudly, you’re making my head bursts..."

Eternity slammed a hand against her lips, stifling her laughter. Once she had considerably calmed down, she took an electrolyte pop from the tray and handed it to him. Evan wordlessly accepted the treat and shoved it inside his mouth.

"Hng!" He groaned as he started sucking on the popsicle. "Cold!"

"It’s fresh from the freezer, after all," she said, a huge smile still plastered on her face as she watched him having a brain freeze over the pop.

"You still haven’t answered my question," Evan pointed out once he got over his brain freeze, gazing at her with his swollen eyes.

"It wasn’t over something ’silly.’" Eternity said after a few seconds of silence. "In my opinion, if someone cried over something, then it couldn’t be considered as something ’silly.’ That something meant a great deal to you; that’s why you poured your emotions over it."

"My feelings being valid and all that shit," he snorted. "Are you becoming chronically online again?"

"What?" Eternity gasped at his accusation. "It’s not me being chronically online, it’s just your feelings are truly valid, Evan."

She didn’t think it was possible, but when she glanced at him again, she had to do a double take because Evan had already finished his electrolyte pop in just a matter of minutes. Wordlessly, Evan took another pop from the tray and continued sucking on it, the cold treat providing some relief to his aching head.

"So?" Evan said impatiently. "What was I crying out?"

"Basically, you told me about your fears--"

"Nope," Evan interrupted, standing up from the bed and hurrying out of his bedroom. "I don’t want to hear more of it."

Still, Eternity followed him outside and into the hallway. "I thought you wanted to know!"

"Not anymore!" he called back over his shoulder.

"Are you sure?" She asked, trailing behind him.

"Positive!"

Eternity felt a smile creep on her lips.

A part of her was amused that Evan was cringing over his theatrics last night. There was also a part of her that was glad she could keep her secret a little longer.

Just a little longer.
