The moment they were gone, Rona Langdon began her tirade. "Vera Xavier, you did this today just to make me look bad, didn’t you? Spit it out! How did you cheat to get these scores!"
Vera Xavier said, her voice full of grievance, "Mom, even if I cheated, there’s no way I could get first in the class and third in the entire school. And even if I wanted to copy, I’d need someone to copy from!"
Rona Langdon was left speechless for a moment before she said bluntly, "Someone as stupid as you, how could you possibly do so well on the exam?"
Vera Xavier’s tone became even more aggrieved. "Mom, have you forgotten? I got into Number One High School with a nearly perfect score on the entrance exam. It’s just that you told me every single day that studying was useless, that it was better to get married early, that I should just go get a job. She sniffled and said, "My birth mother already abandoned me. If you abandon me too, I won’t have a home!"

Rona Langdon flew into a rage. "So you’re not afraid of making me angry now, is that it! Look at you! You’re not cut out for studying! You’re just a money pit! Keeping you at home is like feeding a freeloader. You’d be better off getting married and finding a job to earn some money!"
"Shut up!" Zachary Preston snapped, unable to tolerate it any longer. "Vera is our daughter! How can you speak to her like that!"
"I... She..." Rona Langdon stammered, unable to voice her true complaint. ’Should I find the right time to tell Zachary that Vera isn’t our biological daughter?’ she wondered. ’Then he wouldn’t be so protective of her all the time.’

"What do you mean we can’t afford it!" Zachary Preston was furious. "We had thirty thousand in savings, plus my salary for the entire year. How could we possibly not be able to afford to send Vera and Cara to school? Even if we had no money, I would sell everything we own to make sure they go to college!"
His stance was resolute, and a warmth spread through Vera Xavier’s heart.
