The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 18: My Wife
Vera had learned this tactic from Cara Preston: play the part of a loved one to snatch away what someone treasures most, and if that fails, turn around and attack them.
But she had underestimated Cara Preston’s acting skills. Cara’s eyes filled with tears. "Sister, it’s not that I don’t want to, but if I lend you the books, Mom will kill me..."
Not only did this statement absolve her of blame, but it also drove a wedge between Vera and Rona Langdon. It was no wonder, Vera thought, that she had lost so badly to Cara in her past life.
Vera smiled and said, "I was just joking. Look how worked up you are. I’ll just go find someone else to borrow a set from."
With that, she walked out. Cara, afraid she might bring up the books again, didn’t dare to stop her.
The moment Vera was gone, a vicious look twisted Cara’s features. ’I’d like to see how well you score on the exams this time!’
After leaving, Vera planned to buy a new set of books from a nearby used bookstore. But just as she reached the gate of the residential compound, she saw a black Mercedes SUV parked by the side of the road.
The car’s model would still be considered stylish twenty years from now, let alone in an era when the average person’s spending power was still low.
For that reason, Vera gave the vehicle a second glance. The window rolled down, revealing Nathaniel Nathan’s handsome yet cold face. "Get in!"
Vera glanced around. Seeing no one, she quickly climbed into his car.
Nathaniel Nathan was driving himself today. Once Vera was settled, she asked, "What are you doing here?"
"Just passing by," Nathaniel said, glancing at her.
Vera felt a little helpless at his way of speaking. From the looks of it, he had most likely been waiting here for her, yet he insisted on putting it that way. In her past life, it was precisely this manner of his that had made her keep him at arm’s length.
She smiled. "Fancy running into you here. Nathaniel Nathan, don’t you think we’re quite fated to meet?"
Nathaniel glanced at her. When she smiled, her eyes sparkled and two adorable little dimples appeared on her cheeks. His heart instantly melted, but his words were still just as harsh. "I heard the Kane family paid your house a visit this morning?"
"Where did you hear that?" Vera asked.
Nathaniel would die before admitting he was paying extra attention to her and had even found an informant in the compound. His tone was clipped. "It was such a huge scene, it’d be hard *not* to know."
Vera gave a slight smile. "Fair enough."
She knew that wasn’t what he really wanted to ask, so she volunteered the information he was actually after. "My mom returned all the Kane family’s betrothal gifts. After that whole fiasco, my engagement to Wesley Kane is completely off. I have nothing to do with him anymore."
Vera sensed Nathaniel let out an almost inaudible sigh of relief. If she hadn’t been paying such close attention to him, she would have missed it entirely.
"You’re my wife now. You never had anything to do with him in the first place." Nathaniel’s tone remained devoid of warmth, but when he said the two words "my wife," it softened unconsciously.
Vera knew his difficult personality, so she smiled and asked, "Where are we going now?"
"You guess," Nathaniel said flatly.
Vera rolled her eyes at him internally. ’If I could guess that, I’d be a psychic.’ So, she just told him her plans directly. "My mom sold all my books. I need to go buy a new set. If you’re not busy, could you come with me?"
