The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 46: Sleeping in Each Other’s Arms
Vera Xavier couldn’t help but wonder, ’Am I dealing with a fake Nathaniel Nathan?’
Maybe it was the unique enchantment of the late night, or perhaps she’d been reading for so long that her brain had gone a little fuzzy. Whatever the reason, she acted on pure impulse. Without a second thought, she reached out, pinched his cheek, and muttered, "It really is Nathaniel Nathan!"
No one had ever dared to pinch Nathaniel Nathan’s face before, so he was frozen for a second. By the time he processed what had happened, she had already snapped back to reality and retracted her hand. He stared at her, his gaze deep and inscrutable.
His look sent a shiver through her, snapping her completely back to her senses. Just as she was about to force a smile and try to bluff her way out of it, he reached out and touched her face. He gave it a light pinch and said, "Feels nice."
Hearing this, Vera Xavier immediately recalled what his cheek had felt like under her fingers. ’Uh... his felt pretty nice too, actually.’
Vera Xavier’s bed was tiny, only 1.2 meters wide. With a tall man like Nathaniel—well over 1.8 meters—lying on it, he took up more than half the space. She looked at the sliver of mattress left for her with a pang of dismay. ’This... how am I supposed to sleep?’
Nathaniel Nathan said nothing. He simply reached out, pulling her into his embrace. She struggled reflexively for a moment before hearing his slightly husky voice command, "Don’t move!"
Vera Xavier felt his body tense and something hard pressing against her. ’Having lived two lives, how could she possibly not know what that meant?’
As expected, she didn’t dare to move another inch. Her cheek was pressed against his chest, and she could hear his strong, powerful heartbeat. It was hammering erratically...
Along with his erratic heartbeat came his ragged breathing and the searing heat radiating from his body.
It finally dawned on the slow-witted Vera Xavier why he had said he was hot earlier. Only she had been foolish enough to think he was talking about the weather.
It was the first time Vera Xavier had ever been this close to him, and she was incredibly nervous. She whispered his name, "Nathaniel Nathan..."
"Sleep," Nathaniel Nathan said.
Vera felt like crying. ’How could she possibly fall asleep when he was holding her like this!’
Nathaniel seemed to realize this as well, and the arm around her waist loosened slightly. She seized the opportunity to roll away from him, pressing herself as close to the edge of the bed as she could get.
They were legally married, certificates and all, but she truly wasn’t ready to start a life with him. She really had no idea what he was trying to accomplish by showing up like this tonight.
Vera Xavier was certain she wouldn’t be able to sleep with a grown man lying next to her.
But she had clearly overestimated her own restlessness. Whether it was exhaustion or some other reason entirely, nestled in his arms, the initial panic gave way to a faint but surprising sense of security.
And so, less than three minutes later, she was fast asleep!
Vera Xavier was a quiet sleeper, still and well-behaved.
She slept soundly, but a certain someone was having a very different experience. Holding her soft, warm body in his arms was its own special kind of torment—being able to touch, but not to taste.
Several times, Nathaniel was tempted to push her away, climb back over the wall, and go home. But he couldn’t bring himself to do it.
He didn’t even dare to move too much, for fear of waking her.
His emotions were a tangled mess. He murmured, "Vera Xavier, if only you could lie in my arms like this for the rest of our lives."
Lost in a deep sleep, Vera Xavier offered no reply.
Moonlight streamed in through the small window, casting a cool, white glow on Vera Xavier’s face. It gave her an ethereal quality, as if she were a fairy who didn’t belong to the mortal world. The sight stirred something primal within him, making his desire burn even hotter.
